Scene 53 ~ The Retreat to the Hornburg

The Two Towers Scene 53

Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn continue to fight and kill the Uruk-hai behind the Deeping Wall.  Theoden looks on and shouts to Aragorn

THEODEN: Aragorn! Fall back to the Keep! Get your men out of there!
ARAGORN: Nan Barad! Nan Barad! (To the Keep! Pull back to the Keep!  (he shouts to Haldir on top of the wall) Haldir, nan Barad! (Haldir, to the Keep!)
Haldir nods and gestures to his elves.  Legolas and and elven warrior grab Gimli on either arm and carry him, protesting away.
GIMLI: What are you doing? What are you stopping for?
Haldir continues to beckon the elves to leave.
HALDIR: Nan Barad! (To the Keep!)
As he turns to run he kills an Uruk, but then one runs up to him and stabs him in the stomach.  He clutches his stomach feeling blood, and stumbles.  As he turns the Uruk stabs him in the back.  Aragorn sees him falling and shouts
ARAGORN: Haldir!
Aragorn fights his way to the top of the wall.  Haldir kneels seeing the dead elves on the ground before him, haunting music is heard. As Aragorn reaches him and grabs hold of him, Haldir falls back in his arms, dead. Aragorn places a hand on his own chest and then on Haldir's.  He suddenly notices the Uruks running towards him, he leaps up, punches an Uruk and jumps to the top of a propped up ladder, swinging it to the ground and falling with it., he jumps into a group of Uruk-hai on the ground.

Meanwhile at the Gate other Uruk-hai are still battering down the Gate with their ram. They make a hole in it and fire their cross-bows through the hole, killing many men.

SOLDIER: Brace the gate!
SOLDIER:  Hold them!
Theoden on top of the Hornburg wall, speaks to Gamling and his other captain
THEODEN: To the gate. Draw your swords!
At the Gate Theoden and the others attempt to push the Uruk-hai away.  Aragorn runs up with the remaining soldiers into the Keep.  Theoden is stabbed in the arm with a long spear.
GAMLING: Make way! ( Gamling grabs Theoden and drags him away to safety) We cannot hold much longer!
The Gate is starrting to give way.  Aragorn appears, touches Theoden's arm and joins in the fighting at the Gate
THEODEN: Hold them!
ARAGORN: (turns to Theoden) How long do you need?
THEODEN: As long as you can give me. (he takes his sword back)
ARAGORN: (nods and pushes Gimli into a side passage) Gimli!
The men surge forward to the gate and Theoden shouts to them
THEODEN:  Timbers! Brace the gate!
Meanwhile outside the wall, Aragorn and Gimli open a secret side door on the right hand side of the causeway on the rocks. There is a gap between the rocks and the causeway.  Aragorn peers round the corner of the wall, to see many Uruks fighting to get in through the gate
GIMLI: Come on. We can take them.
ARAGORN: It's a long way.
GIMLI: (looks and hestitates, then mumbles)  Toss me.
GIMLI: (crossly) I cannot jump the distance! You'll have to toss me!
Aragorn nods and reaches down to Gimli's back.  Gimli closes his eyes.
GIMLI: (suddenly opening his eyes) Don't tell the Elf.
ARAGORN: Not a word. (and he throws Gimli onto the causeway amongst the uruk-hai and jumps after him)
Between them they fight off the Uruk-hai leaving the gate free from attack.  Inside the Hornburg Theoden shouts to his men
THEODEN: Shore up the door!
SOLDIER: Make way!
SOLDIER: Follow me to the barricade.
SOLDIER: Watch our backs!
SOLDIER:  Throw another one over here!
THEODEN:  Higher!
The men bring wood to repair the door.  Gimli and Aragorn continue to fight.  Meanwhile on the ground before Helms Deep, Uruk-hai are launching massive grappling hooks attached to rope at the Hornburg walls.  They pull on the ropes once launched and raise massive ladders, with many Uruk-hai clinging to them, to the walls.  Legolas notices this and quickly fires an arrow at one of the ropes causing the ladder to fall back to the ground, crushing many uruk-hai.
SOLDIER: Hold fast the gate!
THEODEN: (calls to Aragorn through the small gap in the Gate) Gimli! Aragorn! Get out of there! (as they turn to Theoden an Uruk grabs them both and Theoden disappears behind the gate as the gap is filled)
LEGOLAS: (seeing their plight throws a rope down to them from on top of the Hornburg wall) Aragorn!
Aragorn grabs hold of it, and with his other arm holds onto Gimli.  Legolas and a soldier pull up the rope.  More ladders are being launched against the wall.  They drag them over the wall.

Inside the Hornbury Theoden sends out orders

THEODEN: Pull everybody back. Pull them back.
GAMLING: Fall back! Fall back!
THEODEN: They have broken through! The castle is breached. Retreat!
The Uruk-hai finally break through the Gate
GAMLING: Fall back!
THEODEN: Retreat!
Men hurry inside the Keep.
ARAGORN: Hurry! Inside. Get them inside!
GAMLING: Into the Keep!
They run inside. Legolas leaves a departing shot of two arrows

Scene 54 ~ Master Peregrin's Plan

The Two Towers Scene 54

Merry and Pippin are again riding high in Treebeard's branches as he walks through Fangorn forest
TREEBEARD: I will leave you at the western borders of the forest. You can make your way north to your homeland from there.
The hobbits are looking fed up and sad.  Suddenly Pippin has an idea
PIPPIN: Wait! Stop! Stop! Turn around. Turn around. Take us south.
TREEBEARD: South? But that will lead you past lsengard.
PIPPIN: Yes. Exactly. (Merry looks puzzled) If we go south, we can slip past Saruman unnoticed. The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll expect.
TREEBEARD: (confused he stops) That doesn't make sense to me. But then......you are very small. (he starts to turn round, Pippin looks releived and smiles) Perhaps you're right. South it is, then. Hold on, little Shirelings. (he starts to walk towards the South) I always like going south. Somehow it feels like going downhill.
MERRY: (talking to Pippin) Are you mad? We'll be caught.
PIPPIN: (knowingly) No, we won't. Not this time.

Scene 55 ~ Osgiliath

The Two Towers Scene 55

Faramir and his men are walking across the plains with Frodo and Sam and Gollum on a rope towards Osgiliath
SOLDIER: Look! Osgiliath burns!
SOLDIER: Mordor has come.
FRODO: (with tears in his eyes)  The Ring will not save Gondor. (he turns to face Faramir) It has only the power to destroy. Please......Iet me go.
Faramir pauses thinking.  Then he looks at Osgiliath and hurries them on.
The soldiers grab Frodo and Sam and push them forward.  Frodo struggles, looking back at Faramir
FRODO: Faramir! You must let me go!

Scene 56 ~ The Last March of the Ents

The Two Towers Scene 56

Treebeard reaches the edge of Fangorn
TREEBEARD: And those little family of field mice......that climb up sometimes, and they tickle me awfully.
Merry and Pippin look in wonderment at the scene before them
TREEBEARD: They're always trying to get somewhere where they....
He pauses looking at the devastation before him, burnt tree stumps, no sign of vegetation anywhere
TREEBEARD: Many of these trees were my friends. Creatures I had known from nut and acorn.
PIPPIN: I'm sorry, Treebeard.
TREEBEARD: They had voices of their own.
TREEBEARD: (in sudden realisation and anger) Saruman. A wizard should know better! (he lets out a loud huge roar which rumbles throughout the forest)
TREEBEARD: There is no curse in Elvish......Entish or the tongues of Men......for this treachery.
Merry and Pippin look around them as they hear noises
PIPPIN: Look! The trees! They're moving!
From out of the forest many many Ents appear, walking towards Isengard
MERRY: Where are they going?
TREEBEARD: They have business with the Orcs. My business is with lsengard tonight......with rock and stone.
More Ents continue to appear from the forest
TREEBEARD: Come, my friends. The Ents are going to war. It is likely......that we go to our doom.
Last march......of the Ents.
The continue to march towards Isengard
