Scene 41 ~ Sons of the Steward

The Two Towers Scene 41

Faramir sits alone holding Boromir's cloven horn. He sees a flashback to when Osgiliath was retaken. Boromir stands up high and raises his arms holding the banner of Gondor.  The soliders cheer

SOLDIER: Boromir! Boromir!

Boromir puts the flag down and unsheathes his sword

BOROMIR: This city was once the jewel of our kingdom. A place of light and beauty and music. And so it shall be once more! (he raises his sword and the crowds cheer) Let the armies of Mordor know this: Never again will the land of my people fall into enemy hands. (more cheers) This city of Osgiliath has been reclaimed (he raises his sword again) for Gondor!

CROWD: For Gondor!

BOROMIR: For Gondor!

CROWD: For Gondor!

BOROMIR: For Gondor!

The crowd cheers again.  Faramir appears and walks joyfully to Boromir. They hug laughing

FARAMIR: Good speech. Nice and short.

BOROMIR: Leaves more time for drinking! (they laugh) Break out the ale! These men are thirsty!

The crowd cheers and Boromir brings two goblets of ale, giving one to Faramir

BOROMIR: Remember today, little brother. Today, life is good.

They toast and take a drink.  Faramir glances warily sideways

BOROMIR: (laughing) What?

FARAMIR: He's here.

BOROMIR: (seeing Denethor talking to the soldiers behind them) One moment of peace, can he not give us that?

DENETHOR: Where is he? Where is Gondor's finest? Where's my first-born?

BOROMIR: (looks jaded and turns to face his father) Father!

DENETHOR: They say you vanquished the enemy almost single-handedly.

BOROMIR: They exaggerate. The victory belongs to Faramir also.

He looks towards Faramir who walks towards them

DENETHOR: But for Faramir, this city would still be standing.

Faramir looks uneasy

DENETHOR: Were you not entrusted to protect it?

FARAMIR: I would have done, but our numbers were too few.

DENETHOR: Oh, too few. You let the enemy walk in and take it on a whim. Always you cast a poor reflection on me. (he walks up to Faramir.  Boromir drops his head)

FARAMIR: That is not my intent.

BOROMIR: You give him no credit, and yet he tries to do your will.

Boromir walks away and Denethor follows him.

BOROMIR: He loves you, Father.

DENETHOR: Do not trouble me with Faramir......I know his uses, and they are few. We have more urgent things to speak of. Elrond of Rivendell has called a meeting. He will not say why, but I have guessed its purpose. It is rumored that the weapon of the enemy has been found.

BOROMIR: (looks worried) The One Ring. lsildur's Bane.

DENETHOR: (whispers) lt has fallen into the hands of the Elves. Everyone will try to claim it: Men, Dwarves, wizards. We cannot let that happen. This thing must come to Gondor.

BOROMIR: (shakes his head) Gondor.

DENETHOR: (he clutches Boromir's arm) It's dangerous, I know. Ever the Ring will seek to corrupt the hearts of lesser Men. But you, you are strong.
And our need is great. It is our blood which is being spilled, our people who are dying. Sauron is biding his time. He's massing fresh armies. He will return. And when he does, we will be powerless to stop him. You must go. (Boromir looks taken aback) Bring me back this mighty gift
.
BOROMIR: (shakes his head) No. My place is here with my people. (he walks away) Not in Rivendell.

DENETHOR: Would you deny your own father?

Faramir appears

FARAMIR: lf there is need to go to Rivendell......send me in his stead.

DENETHOR: You? Oh, I see. A chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor, to show his quality. I think not. (Faramir lowers his eyes, deeply hurt) I trust this mission only to your brother. The one who will not fail me.

Boromir is on his horse.  He looks up at the Gondor banner and then at his brother

BOROMIR: Remember today, little brother.

He rides out of Osgiliath

Scene 42 ~ The Forbidden Pool

The Two Towers Scene 42

Faramir comes out of his daydream

SOLDIER: Captain Faramir! (whispering to him) We found the third one.

Faramir walks over to Frodo and Sam who are sleeping.  Frodo wakes up

FARAMIR: You must come with me. Now.

Frodo follows Faramir and walks to the edge of the waterfall overlooking the forbidden pool

FARAMIR: (pointing towards the pool) Down there.

Frodo looks down to the pool and sees Gollum diving off a rock

FARAMIR: To enter the Forbidden Pool bears the penalty of death. (he gestures to archers standing with their bows drawn at Gollum on either side of him) They wait for my command. Shall I shoot?

Frodo looks very worried.  Gollum climbs out of the pool with a fish.  He slaps it on a rock

GOLLUM: The rock and pool
Is nice and cool
So juicy sweet
Our only wish
To catch a fish
So juicy sweet (the fish wriggles and Gollum slaps it harder on the rock)

Faramir raises his hand to signal to the archers to shoot.  Frodo hesitates then shouts

FRODO: Wait. This creature is bound to me. And I to him. He is our guide. Please......Iet me go down to him.

Faramir nods and Frodo scrambles down to the pool to Gollum

FRODO: Smeagol. (Gollum looks up) Master is here. Come, Smeagol. Trust master. Come.

GOLLUM: (hesitates) We must go now?

FRODO: Smeagol, you must trust master. Follow me. Come on. Come. Come, Smeagol. Nice Smeagol. That's it. Come on.

Gollum puts the fish in his mouth and warily follows Frodo.  Suddenly he is grabbed by the soliders

FRODO: Don't hurt him! (he looks frantically at the soldiers and back at Gollum) Smeagol, don't struggle. Smeagol, listen to me.

GOLLUM: Master!

The soldiers put a bag over his head and lead him away.  In the cave they throw him to the ground and push him around.  Faramir turns to the soldiers

FARAMIR: That's enough. (he turns to Gollum) Where are you leading them? (Gollum curls up in a ball with his back to him) Answer me.

GOLLUM: (talking to himself and stroking his back) Smeagol. Why does it cry, Smeagol?

SMEAGOL: (crying) Cruel Men hurts us. Master tricksed us. (Faramir looks on confused and interested)

GOLLUM: Of course he did. I told you he was tricksy. I told you he was false.

SMEAGOL: (sobs) Master is our friend. Our friend.

GOLLUM: Master betrayed us. (Faramir looks fascinated by what he is saying)

SMEAGOL: No. Not its business. Leave us alone!

GOLLUM: (hits his fist on the ground) Filthy little Hobbitses! They stole it from us!

SMEAGOL: No. No.

FARAMIR: What did they steal?

GOLLUM: (turns round to Faramir with a evil expression) My precious! (he bares his teeth and growls)

Sam and Frodo are sitting on the floor at the back of the cave

SAM: (whispering) We have to get out of here. You go. Go, now. You can do it. Use the Ring, Mr. Frodo. Just this once. Put it on. Disappear.

FRODO: (looks like he considers the thought then shakes his head) I can't. You were right, Sam. You tried to tell me but....(he looks frightened) I'm sorry. The Ring's taking me, Sam. If I put it on......he'll find me. He'll see.

SAM: (puts a hand on Frodo's shoulder) Mr. Frodo....

Faramir walks in suddenly and draws his sword.  Sam and Frodo stand up

FARAMIR: So this is the answer to all the riddles. (he advances towards Frodo his sword pointing towards him) Here in the Wild I have you......two Halflings......and a host of men at my call. (Frodo backs himself against a wall) The Ring of Power within my grasp. (he lifts the Ring around Frodo's neck up with the tip of his sword) A chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor......to show his quality.

FRODO: (beings to fall into a trance, and the Ring whispers.  Suddenly Frodo pulls away) No! (he runs to a corner of the cave)

SAM: Stop it! Leave him alone. (Faramir is staring at Frodo in a slight trance) Don't you understand? He's got to destroy it! That's where we're going, into Mordor. To the Mountain of Fire!

Faramir is still entranced.  A soldier walks in

SOLDIER: Osgiliath is under attack. They call for reinforcements.

SAM: (tearfully) Please. It's such a burden. Will you not help him?

Faramir appears still undecided

SOLDIER: Captain?

FARAMIR: (turning to the soldier) Prepare to leave. (he looks at Sam) The Ring will go to Gondor. (Sam looks at him disbelievingly)

Scene 43 ~ Aragorn's Return

The Two Towers Scene 43

Aragorn is riding over a hill on Brego. He stops at the brow of it as he hears stamping.  He is horrified to see a massive army dressed in black advancing towards Helms Deep. He gallops off, through night and day, until he finally arrives at Helms Deep. He stops looking down on it

ARAGORN: (patting Brego's neck) Mae carnen, Brego, mellon nn. (Well done, Brego, my friend) (he rides into Helms Deep through the crowds of people)

WOMAN: He's alive!

GIMLI: (pushes his way through the crowd around Aragorn) Where is he? Where is he? Get out of the way! I'm going to kill him! (he reaches Aragorn and shakes his fists) You are the luckiest, the canniest (Aragorn smiles).....and the most reckless man I ever knew. Bless you, laddie. (he hugs him)

ARAGORN: Gimli, where is the king? (Gimli nods in the direction of the hall)

As Aragorn walks towards the hall, fastening his belt, Legolas suddenly appears in front of him

LEGOLAS: Le abdollen. (Youre late.) (Aragorn raises his eyebrows.  Legolas looks over Aragorn) You look terrible. (they grin at each other)

Eowyn overhears them talking, and turns to run towards Aragorn, but stops herself and watches.  Legolas hands the Evenstar to Aragorn. He holds it up in his hand

ARAGORN: Hannon le. (Thank you.)

Eowyn looks on with tears in her eyes

Theoden and Gamling are talking in the Hall when they hear the doors opening and look to see Aragorn pushing them open

THEODEN: A great host, you say?

ARAGORN: All lsengard is emptied.

THEODEN: How many?

ARAGORN: Ten thousand strong at least.

THEODEN: (turns to face Aragorn and speaks in disbelief) Ten thousand?

ARAGORN: It is an army bred for a single purpose: To destroy the world of Men. They will be here by nightfall.

THEODEN: (turning and walking away) Let them come!

Outside Theoden walks with Gamling and Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to the gate.

THEODEN: (to Gamling) I want every man and strong lad able to bear arms......to be ready for battle by nightfall. (Gamling nods and walks off.  The other make their way to the ramp outside the gate)

THEODEN: We will cover the causeway and the gate from above. No army has ever breached the Deeping Wall......or set foot inside the Hornburg!

GIMLI: This is no rabble of mindless Orcs. These are Uruk-hai. Their armour is thick and their shields broad.

THEODEN: I have fought many wars, Master Dwarf. I know how to defend my own keep.

Gimli looks disgruntled and as they walk past him, Aragorn puts a hand on his shoulder

THEODEN: They will break upon this fortress like water on rock. (they walk around the inner ramparts) Saruman's hordes will pillage and burn.
We've seen it before. Crops can be resown......homes rebuilt. Within these walls......we will outlast them.

ARAGORN: They do not come to destroy Rohan's crops or villages. They come to destroy its people......down to the last child.

THEODEN: (walks back towards Aragorn and takes his arm) What would you have me do? Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread. If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end......as to be worthy of remembrance.

ARAGORN: Send out riders, my lord. You must call for aid.

THEODEN: And who will come? Elves? Dwarves? We are not so lucky in our friends as you. The old alliances are dead.

ARAGORN: Gondor will answer.

THEODEN: (puts his face up to Aragorn's in anger) Gondor?! Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?! Where was Gondor when our enemies closed in around us?! Where was Gon--? (he pauses stopping himself and speaks calmer) No, my Lord Aragorn......we are alone. (he walks off back to the Hall with Gamling and guards following) Get the women and children into the caves.

GAMLING: We need more time to lay provisions--

THEODEN: There is no time. War is upon us. Secure the gate.

Flocks of crows circle above calling out

Scene 44 ~ Entmoot

The Two Towers Scene 44

Merry and Pippin are still sitting in Treebeard's branches.  They are reaching a clearing in the forest

TREEBEARD: We Ents have not troubled......about the wars of Men and wizards......for a very long time. But now, something is about to happen......that has not happened......for an age. (he stops walking and holds his arm out) Entmoot.

MERRY: What's that?

TREEBEARD: 'Tis a gathering.

MERRY: (looking around slightly worried) A gathering of what?

Low rumbling noises are heard.  The hobbits look around them to see other Ents walking towards them through the forest

TREEBEARD: Beech. Oak. Chestnut. Ash. Good. Good. Good. Many have come. (the Ents stare at the hobbits) Now we must decide if the Ents......will go to war.

Merry smiles broadly
