Scenes 21 to 24

Scene 21 ~ The Funeral of Theodred

The Two Towers Scene 21

ITheodred's body is borne from the main city, and taken outside the city gates, to the burial mounds.  He is borne by six royal guards, and followed by Theoden, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas and Gimli and the people of Edoras.  Eowyn waits with other women at his tomb
At his tomb, his body is passed to the women, and Eowyn starts to sing

EOWYN: Bealocwealm hafað fréone frecan forth onsended
giedd sculon singan gléomenn sorgiende
on Meduselde þæt he ma no wære
his dryhtne dyrest and mæga deorost.
Bealo...

TRANSLATION:

(‘An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing sorrowing minstrels
in Meduseld that he is no more,
to his lord dearest and kinsmen most belover.
'An evil death...)

Theodred's body is passed into the tomb and the doors shut behind him

Scene 22 ~ Simbelmynë on the Burial Mounds

The Two Towers Scene 22

The tomb in which Theodred lays is shown.  In front of it a single Simelmyne flower.  It falls to the ground

THEODEN: Simbelmyne. Ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebearers. (he turns to Gandalf) Now it shall cover the grave
of my son. Alas that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger. That I should live......to see the last days of my house.

GANDALF: Theodred's death was not of your making.

THEODEN: No parent should have to bury their child.

He falls to his knees weeping

GANDALF: He was strong in life. His spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers. Westu hál. Ferðu, Théodred, Ferðu. (Be-thou well. Go-thou, Théodred, go-thou.)

Gandalf leaves Theoden to mourn in peace.  As he walks back up the hill, he turns to see two children riding on a horse.  The boy falls off the horse in exhaustion

Scene 23 ~ The King's Decision

The Two Towers Scene 23

In the Golden Hall the children are eating ravenously, as Eowyn sits with them

EOWYN: They had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the Wild Men are moving through the Westfold, burning as they go. Rick, cot and tree. (she looks to all there, Gandalf, Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli)

FREDA: Where is Mama?

EOWYN: Sssh (she wraps a blanket round her)

GANDALF: (sitting beside Theoden who has his head in his hand) This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. (Theoden takes away his hand and listens) All the more potent for he is driven now by fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on. Draw him away from your women and children. (he places a hand on Theoden's chair) You must fight.

ARAGORN: You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Eomer is loyal to you. His men will return and fight for their king.

THEODEN: (gets up out of his seat) They will be 300 leagues from here by now. Eomer cannot help us. I know what it is you want of me......but I will not bring further death to my people. I will not risk open war.

ARAGORN: Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not.

THEODEN: When last I looked......Theoden, not Aragorn, was King of Rohan.

Gimli who is eating and drinking burps loudly and looks embarrassed

GANDALF Then what is the king's decision?

Outside the Golden Hall, Hama stands amongst the people of Rohan

HAMA: By order of the king......the city must empty. We make for the refuge of Helm's Deep.

Gandalf walks through the people gathering their belongings followed by Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli

HAMA: Do not burden yourself with treasures. Take only what provisions you need.

GANDALF: Helm's Deep.

GIMLI: They flee to the mountains when they should stand and fight. Who will defend them if not their king?

ARAGORN: He's only doing what he thinks is best for his people. Helm's Deep has saved them in the past.

They walk into the stables

GANDALF: There is no way out of that ravine. Theoden is walking into a trap. He thinks he's leading them to safety. What they will get is a massacre. Theoden has a strong will, but I fear for him. I fear for the survival of Rohan. (he turns to face Aragorn) He will need you before the end,
Aragorn. The people of Rohan will need you. (Aragorn takes a deep breath) The defenses have to hold.

ARAGORN: They will hold.

GANDALF: (stroking Shadowfax) The Grey Pilgrim. That's what they used to call me. Three hundred lives of Men I've walked this earth, and now I have no time. With luck, my search will not be in vain. (he mounts Shadowfax and Aragorn stands aside) Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east.

ARAGORN: (nods) Go.

Gandalf rides off out of the stables

149
00:18:42,032 --> 00:18:45,365
That horse is half mad, my lord.
There's nothing you can do. Leave him.

150
00:19:24,408 --> 00:19:26,467
His name is Brego.

151
00:19:27,978 --> 00:19:29,878
He was my cousin's horse.

152
00:19:30,113 --> 00:19:31,910
Brego.

153
00:19:46,630 --> 00:19:49,030
I have heard of the magic of Elves...

154
00:19:49,199 --> 00:19:52,498
...but I did not look for it
in a Ranger from the North.

155
00:19:53,537 --> 00:19:55,971
You speak as one of their own.

156
00:19:57,774 --> 00:20:00,208
I was raised in Rivendell...

157
00:20:00,477 --> 00:20:02,001
...for a time.

158
00:20:05,315 --> 00:20:07,340
Turn this fellow free.

159
00:20:08,018 --> 00:20:10,486
He's seen enough of war.

160
00:20:22,266 --> 00:20:25,133
Gandalf the White.

161
00:20:25,302 --> 00:20:27,668
Gandalf the Fool!

162
00:20:28,939 --> 00:20:33,000
Does he seek to humble me
with his newfound piety?

163
00:20:34,244 --> 00:20:38,180
There were three
who followed the wizard.

164
00:20:38,582 --> 00:20:43,952
An Elf, a Dwarf and a Man.

165
00:20:44,321 --> 00:20:47,051
You stink of horse.

166
00:20:52,329 --> 00:20:54,194
The Man...

167
00:20:56,233 --> 00:21:00,431
-...was he from Gondor?
-No, from the North.

168
00:21:00,604 --> 00:21:04,404
One of the Dunedain Rangers,
I thought he was.

169
00:21:04,574 --> 00:21:06,371
His cloth was poor.

170
00:21:07,277 --> 00:21:12,408
And yet he bore a strange ring.

171
00:21:13,517 --> 00:21:17,044
Two serpents with emerald eyes.

172
00:21:17,254 --> 00:21:23,090
One devouring,
the other crowned with golden flowers.

173
00:21:23,260 --> 00:21:25,160
The Ring of Barahir.

174
00:21:26,129 --> 00:21:29,724
So Gandalf Greyhame
thinks he has found lsildur's heir.

175
00:21:29,900 --> 00:21:33,233
The lost king of Gondor.
He is a fool.

176
00:21:33,403 --> 00:21:36,133
The line was broken years ago.

177
00:21:37,507 --> 00:21:39,031
It matters not.

178
00:21:39,209 --> 00:21:41,734
The world of Men shall fall.

179
00:21:41,912 --> 00:21:43,777
It will begin at Edoras.

180
00:21:52,956 --> 00:21:54,890
I am ready, Gamling.

181
00:21:55,058 --> 00:21:57,526
Bring my horse.

182
00:22:00,697 --> 00:22:02,062
This is not a defeat.

183
00:22:04,468 --> 00:22:05,696
We will return.

184
00:22:11,141 --> 00:22:13,541
We will return.

185
00:22:36,967 --> 00:22:38,901
You have some skill with a blade.

186
00:22:47,344 --> 00:22:49,437
Women of this country learned long ago:

187
00:22:49,613 --> 00:22:52,241
Those without swords
can still die upon them.

188
00:22:52,416 --> 00:22:54,247
I fear neither death nor pain.

189
00:22:55,519 --> 00:22:57,612
What do you fear, my lady?

190
00:23:01,024 --> 00:23:02,855
A cage.

191
00:23:04,161 --> 00:23:07,995
To stay behind bars until use
and old age accept them.

192
00:23:08,165 --> 00:23:12,067
And all chance of valor has gone
beyond recall or desire.

193
00:23:15,505 --> 00:23:17,530
You're a daughter of kings...

194
00:23:18,809 --> 00:23:22,108
...a shieldmaiden of Rohan.

195
00:23:27,417 --> 00:23:29,908
I do not think that would be your fate.

196
00:24:02,986 --> 00:24:05,978
Theoden will not stay at Edoras.

197
00:24:06,189 --> 00:24:08,248
It's vulnerable. He knows this.

198
00:24:08,458 --> 00:24:11,359
He will expect an attack on the city.

199
00:24:12,662 --> 00:24:15,927
They will flee to Helm's Deep...

200
00:24:16,099 --> 00:24:18,431
...the great fortress of Rohan.

201
00:24:19,636 --> 00:24:24,039
It is a dangerous road to take
through the mountains.

202
00:24:25,475 --> 00:24:27,204
They will be slow.

203
00:24:27,577 --> 00:24:32,014
They will have women and children
with them.

204
00:24:35,919 --> 00:24:38,149
Send out your Warg-riders.

205
00:24:53,003 --> 00:24:55,904
Hey, stinker, don't go getting
too far ahead.

206
00:24:56,072 --> 00:24:58,734
-Why do you do that?
-What?

207
00:24:58,909 --> 00:25:01,434
Call him names.
Run him down all the time.

208
00:25:01,878 --> 00:25:03,903
Because.

209
00:25:05,448 --> 00:25:07,575
Because that's what he is, Mr. Frodo.

210
00:25:07,784 --> 00:25:09,945
There's naught left in him
but lies and deceit.

211
00:25:10,420 --> 00:25:13,184
It's the Ring he wants.
It's all he cares about.

212
00:25:13,356 --> 00:25:15,620
You have no idea what it did to him...

213
00:25:15,792 --> 00:25:18,260
...what it's still doing to him.

214
00:25:20,497 --> 00:25:22,590
I want to help him, Sam.

215
00:25:22,766 --> 00:25:24,028
Why?

216
00:25:29,339 --> 00:25:32,467
Because I have to believe
he can come back.

217
00:25:36,713 --> 00:25:38,647
You can't save him, Mr. Frodo.

218
00:25:38,815 --> 00:25:41,545
What do you know about it?
Nothing!

219
00:25:48,458 --> 00:25:52,656
I'm sorry, Sam. I don't know
why I said that.

220
00:25:53,496 --> 00:25:54,622
I do.

221
00:25:56,666 --> 00:25:58,531
It's the Ring.

222
00:25:59,102 --> 00:26:00,660
You can't take your eyes off it.

223
00:26:01,404 --> 00:26:03,372
I've seen you.

224
00:26:03,840 --> 00:26:07,674
You're not eating. You barely sleep.

225
00:26:09,446 --> 00:26:11,676
It's taken hold of you, Mr. Frodo.

226
00:26:11,848 --> 00:26:14,544
-You have to fight it.
-I know what I have to do, Sam.

227
00:26:14,751 --> 00:26:17,686
The Ring was entrusted to me.
It's my task.

228
00:26:17,854 --> 00:26:19,549
Mine! My own!

229
00:26:20,423 --> 00:26:22,516
Can't you hear yourself?

230
00:26:22,726 --> 00:26:24,387
Don't you know who you sound like?

231
00:26:34,671 --> 00:26:36,798
We wants it.

232
00:26:36,973 --> 00:26:39,669
We needs it.

233
00:26:39,843 --> 00:26:44,644
Must have the precious.

234
00:26:44,814 --> 00:26:48,181
They stole it from us.

235
00:26:48,385 --> 00:26:51,752
Sneaky little Hobbitses.

236
00:26:51,921 --> 00:26:55,823
Wicked. Tricksy. False.

237
00:26:55,992 --> 00:26:59,257
No. Not master.

238
00:26:59,429 --> 00:27:03,263
Yes, precious. False.

239
00:27:03,433 --> 00:27:07,927
They will cheat you, hurt you, lie!

240
00:27:09,072 --> 00:27:11,540
Master's my friend.

241
00:27:11,708 --> 00:27:16,771
You don't have any friends.
Nobody likes you.

242
00:27:18,048 --> 00:27:20,539
Not listening. I'm not listening.

243
00:27:20,717 --> 00:27:24,710
You're a liar and a thief.

244
00:27:25,388 --> 00:27:26,912
No.

245
00:27:27,857 --> 00:27:30,758
Murderer.

246
00:27:33,229 --> 00:27:34,253
Go away.

247
00:27:34,431 --> 00:27:36,797
Go away?

248
00:27:38,802 --> 00:27:41,600
I hate you.

249
00:27:41,771 --> 00:27:44,171
I hate you.

250
00:27:44,474 --> 00:27:47,773
Where would you be without me?
Gollum. Gollum.

251
00:27:47,944 --> 00:27:49,775
I saved us.

252
00:27:49,946 --> 00:27:54,474
It was me. We survived because of me.

253
00:27:55,719 --> 00:27:59,280
Not anymore.

254
00:28:00,657 --> 00:28:02,181
What did you say?

255
00:28:04,294 --> 00:28:08,128
Master looks after us now.

256
00:28:08,298 --> 00:28:11,790
We don't need you.

257
00:28:12,502 --> 00:28:14,060
What?

258
00:28:14,237 --> 00:28:16,000
Leave now...

259
00:28:16,172 --> 00:28:19,972
...and never come back.

260
00:28:20,143 --> 00:28:21,167
No.

261
00:28:21,678 --> 00:28:25,876
Leave now and never come back.

262
00:28:28,518 --> 00:28:34,423
Leave now and never come back!

263
00:28:46,336 --> 00:28:49,032
We told him to go away.

264
00:28:49,205 --> 00:28:52,174
And away he goes, precious.

265
00:28:52,342 --> 00:28:54,333
Gone! Gone! Gone!

266
00:28:54,511 --> 00:28:56,342
Smeagol is free!

267
00:29:01,217 --> 00:29:02,707
Look.

268
00:29:02,919 --> 00:29:07,379
Look. See what Smeagol finds?

269
00:29:16,933 --> 00:29:18,366
They are young.

270
00:29:18,535 --> 00:29:21,060
They are tender. They are nice.

271
00:29:21,237 --> 00:29:24,764
Yes, they are. Eat them. Eat them!

272
00:29:27,477 --> 00:29:29,069
You'll make him sick, you will...

273
00:29:30,280 --> 00:29:32,475
...behaving like that.

274
00:29:34,918 --> 00:29:37,648
There's only one way to eat
a brace of coneys.

275
00:29:41,891 --> 00:29:43,415
What's it doing?

276
00:29:44,160 --> 00:29:46,754
Stupid, fat Hobbit.

277
00:29:46,930 --> 00:29:49,125
It ruins it.

278
00:29:49,299 --> 00:29:52,928
What's to ruin? There's hardly any meat
on them.

279
00:29:57,073 --> 00:29:59,633
What we need is a few good taters.

280
00:30:00,510 --> 00:30:03,570
What's taters, precious?

281
00:30:03,746 --> 00:30:05,475
What's taters? Eh?

282
00:30:05,648 --> 00:30:07,377
Po-ta-toes.

283
00:30:07,717 --> 00:30:10,948
Boil them, mash them,
stick them in a stew.

284
00:30:12,489 --> 00:30:17,950
Lovely, big, golden chips
with a nice piece of fried fish.

285
00:30:19,295 --> 00:30:21,195
Even you couldn't say no to that.

286
00:30:21,531 --> 00:30:23,726
Oh, yes, we could.

287
00:30:23,900 --> 00:30:27,392
Spoil a nice fish.

288
00:30:28,671 --> 00:30:31,299
Give it to us raw...

289
00:30:31,474 --> 00:30:34,500
...and wriggling.

290
00:30:34,677 --> 00:30:37,805
You keep nasty chips.

291
00:30:38,748 --> 00:30:40,807
You're hopeless.

292
00:30:53,296 --> 00:30:54,786
Mr. Frodo?

293
00:31:12,682 --> 00:31:15,344
-Who are they?
-Wicked Men.

294
00:31:15,552 --> 00:31:18,020
Servants of Sauron.

295
00:31:18,821 --> 00:31:20,982
They are called to Mordor.

296
00:31:21,190 --> 00:31:24,182
The Dark One is gathering all armies
to him.

297
00:31:24,394 --> 00:31:27,557
It won't be long now.
He will soon be ready.

298
00:31:29,132 --> 00:31:32,795
-Ready to do what?
-To make his war.

299
00:31:32,969 --> 00:31:38,134
The last war that will cover
all the world in Shadow.

300
00:31:38,408 --> 00:31:41,468
We've got to get moving. Come on, Sam.

301
00:31:41,644 --> 00:31:42,872
Mr. Frodo.

302
00:31:43,379 --> 00:31:45,006
Look.

303
00:31:48,585 --> 00:31:50,883
It's an oliphaunt.

304
00:31:59,095 --> 00:32:02,121
No one at home will believe this.

305
00:32:13,276 --> 00:32:15,141
Smeagol?

306
00:32:55,518 --> 00:32:57,986
We've lingered here too long.

307
00:33:00,990 --> 00:33:02,321
Come on, Sam.

308
00:33:15,805 --> 00:33:18,501
Wait! We're innocent travelers!

309
00:33:20,209 --> 00:33:25,306
There are no travelers in this land.
Only servants of the Dark Tower.

310
00:33:25,481 --> 00:33:28,382
We are bound to an errand of secrecy.

311
00:33:29,786 --> 00:33:33,153
Those that claim to oppose the enemy
would do well not to hinder us.

312
00:33:33,322 --> 00:33:35,347
The enemy?

313
00:33:37,460 --> 00:33:40,952
His sense of duty was no less
than yours, I deem.

314
00:33:43,399 --> 00:33:45,458
You wonder what his name is...

315
00:33:46,969 --> 00:33:49,233
...where he came from.

316
00:33:51,207 --> 00:33:53,641
And if he was really evil at heart.

317
00:33:55,311 --> 00:33:58,769
What lies or threats led him
on this long march from home.

318
00:34:00,383 --> 00:34:02,874
If he would not rather have stayed there...

319
00:34:05,088 --> 00:34:06,578
...in peace.

320
00:34:10,159 --> 00:34:13,185
War will make corpses of us all.

321
00:34:13,362 --> 00:34:15,421
Bind their hands.

322
00:34:27,997 --> 00:34:30,693
It's true, you don't see
many Dwarf women.

323
00:34:30,900 --> 00:34:34,563
And in fact, they are so alike
in voice and appearance...

324
00:34:34,737 --> 00:34:37,900
...that they're often mistaken
for Dwarf men.

325
00:34:38,307 --> 00:34:40,207
It's the beards.

326
00:34:40,409 --> 00:34:42,536
This, in turn, has given rise
to the belief...

327
00:34:42,712 --> 00:34:45,579
...that there are no Dwarf women...

328
00:34:45,748 --> 00:34:50,014
...and that Dwarves just spring out
of holes in the ground...

329
00:34:51,687 --> 00:34:53,552
...which is, of course, ridiculous.

330
00:34:59,695 --> 00:35:01,925
It's all right. Nobody panic.

331
00:35:02,398 --> 00:35:04,423
That was deliberate.
It was deliberate.

332
00:35:06,369 --> 00:35:10,169
I haven't seen my niece smile
for a long time.

333
00:35:10,439 --> 00:35:13,203
She was a girl when they brought
her father back dead.

334
00:35:13,376 --> 00:35:15,674
Cut down by Orcs.

335
00:35:15,845 --> 00:35:18,837
She watched her mother
succumb to grief.

336
00:35:19,448 --> 00:35:24,078
Then she was left alone,
to tend her king in growing fear.

337
00:35:24,253 --> 00:35:28,815
Doomed to wait upon an old man
who should have loved her as a father.

338
00:35:38,834 --> 00:35:41,200
Gimli.

339
00:35:41,370 --> 00:35:43,429
No, I couldn't

340
00:35:43,606 --> 00:35:45,437
I really couldn't.

341
00:35:49,946 --> 00:35:51,573
I made some stew.

342
00:35:51,747 --> 00:35:55,012
It isn't much, but it's hot.

343
00:36:02,825 --> 00:36:04,884
Thank you.

344
00:36:25,381 --> 00:36:27,906
-It's good.
-Really?

345
00:36:31,887 --> 00:36:35,254
My uncle told me a strange thing.

346
00:36:36,559 --> 00:36:40,620
He said that you rode to war
with Thengel, my grandfather.

347
00:36:41,063 --> 00:36:43,531
But he must be mistaken.

348
00:36:43,799 --> 00:36:48,202
King Theoden has a good memory.
He was only a small child at the time.

349
00:36:49,338 --> 00:36:52,535
Then you must be at least 60.

350
00:36:54,644 --> 00:36:56,202
Seventy?

351
00:36:56,646 --> 00:36:58,307
But you cannot be 80!

352
00:37:01,651 --> 00:37:03,016
Eighty-seven.

353
00:37:06,122 --> 00:37:08,215
You are one of the Dunedain.

354
00:37:09,291 --> 00:37:12,385
A descendant of Numenor,
blessed with long life.

355
00:37:13,629 --> 00:37:16,257
It was said that your race
had passed into legend.

356
00:37:16,932 --> 00:37:18,695
There are few of us left.

357
00:37:18,868 --> 00:37:21,632
The Northern Kingdom
was destroyed long ago.

358
00:37:22,405 --> 00:37:25,806
I'm sorry. Please, eat.

359
00:37:40,456 --> 00:37:44,586
The light of the Evenstar
does not wax and wane.

360
00:37:45,394 --> 00:37:48,830
It is mine to give to whom I will.

361
00:37:50,666 --> 00:37:53,066
Like my heart.

362
00:37:54,503 --> 00:37:57,199
Go to sleep.

363
00:37:57,373 --> 00:37:59,864
I am asleep.

364
00:38:06,348 --> 00:38:08,282
This is a dream.

365
00:38:10,519 --> 00:38:13,716
Then it is a good dream.

366
00:38:25,701 --> 00:38:27,794
Sleep.

367
00:39:31,360 --> 00:39:33,260
Arwen....

368
00:40:22,711 --> 00:40:24,542
Where is she?

369
00:40:25,714 --> 00:40:28,148
The woman who gave you that jewel.

370
00:40:31,454 --> 00:40:34,218
Our time here is ending.

371
00:40:34,924 --> 00:40:37,449
Arwen's time is ending.

372
00:40:38,227 --> 00:40:39,489
Let her go.

373
00:40:39,662 --> 00:40:41,653
Let her take the ship into the west.

374
00:40:41,864 --> 00:40:44,924
Let her bear away her love for you
to the Undying Lands.

375
00:40:45,100 --> 00:40:46,897
There it will be ever green.

376
00:40:48,404 --> 00:40:50,770
But never more than memory.

377
00:40:52,041 --> 00:40:55,067
I will not leave my daughter here
to die.

378
00:40:55,244 --> 00:40:58,873
-She stays because she still has hope.
-She stays for you.

379
00:40:59,048 --> 00:41:01,346
She belongs with her people.

380
00:41:49,665 --> 00:41:51,496
Why are you saying this?

381
00:41:53,068 --> 00:41:56,265
I am mortal. You are Elf-kind.

382
00:41:57,706 --> 00:42:00,368
It was a dream, Arwen.

383
00:42:00,809 --> 00:42:02,174
Nothing more.

384
00:42:03,546 --> 00:42:06,777
I don't believe you.

385
00:42:15,791 --> 00:42:17,622
This belongs to you.

386
00:42:20,396 --> 00:42:21,954
It was a gift.

387
00:42:24,567 --> 00:42:26,091
Keep it.

388
00:42:28,604 --> 00:42:29,798
My lord?

389
00:42:32,608 --> 00:42:37,170
She is sailing to the Undying Lands
with all that is left of her kin.

390
00:43:00,669 --> 00:43:02,136
What is it?

391
00:43:03,639 --> 00:43:05,698
-Hama?
-I'm not sure.

392
00:43:22,224 --> 00:43:24,249
Wargs!

393
00:43:36,805 --> 00:43:38,500
A scout!

394
00:43:44,813 --> 00:43:47,338
-What is it? What do you see?
-Warg! We're under attack!

395
00:43:48,684 --> 00:43:50,879
Get them out of here!

396
00:43:55,658 --> 00:43:57,649
All riders to the head of the column.

397
00:43:58,394 --> 00:44:00,362
Come on. Get me up here. I'm a rider.

398
00:44:00,562 --> 00:44:02,291
Come on!

399
00:44:14,109 --> 00:44:16,543
You must lead the people
to Helm's Deep, and make haste.

400
00:44:16,745 --> 00:44:18,212
-I can fight.
-No!

401
00:44:20,916 --> 00:44:22,975
You must do this, for me.

402
00:44:24,987 --> 00:44:26,579
Follow me!

403
00:44:30,125 --> 00:44:34,425
-Forward. I mean, charge forward.
-Make for the lower ground!

404
00:44:34,630 --> 00:44:37,292
-That's it! Go on!
-Stay together!

405
00:45:49,505 --> 00:45:51,803
Bring your pretty face to my ax.

406
00:45:54,610 --> 00:45:56,168
That one counts as mine!

407
00:46:12,895 --> 00:46:14,522
Stinking creature.

408
00:47:41,717 --> 00:47:43,617
Aragorn!

409
00:47:48,357 --> 00:47:49,824
Aragorn?

410
00:48:03,805 --> 00:48:06,740
Tell me what happened
and I will ease your passing.

411
00:48:06,909 --> 00:48:08,342
He's...

412
00:48:08,911 --> 00:48:10,503
...dead.

413
00:48:11,146 --> 00:48:14,047
He took a little tumble off the cliff.

414
00:48:17,653 --> 00:48:18,950
You lie.

415
00:48:52,854 --> 00:48:54,446
Get the wounded on horses.

416
00:48:55,791 --> 00:48:58,919
The wolves of lsengard will return.

417
00:48:59,361 --> 00:49:01,454
Leave the dead.

418
00:49:08,904 --> 00:49:10,394
Come.

419
00:49:20,582 --> 00:49:22,106
-At last!
-Helm's Deep.

420
00:49:22,284 --> 00:49:25,185
There it is, Helm's Deep.

421
00:49:27,756 --> 00:49:29,553
We're safe!

422
00:49:31,093 --> 00:49:33,960
We're safe, my lady.

423
00:49:34,129 --> 00:49:35,323
Thank you.

424
00:50:19,708 --> 00:50:21,107
-Mama!
-Eothain!

425
00:50:21,276 --> 00:50:22,766
Freda!

426
00:50:28,517 --> 00:50:31,350
-Where is the rest?
-This is all we could save, my lady.

427
00:50:35,223 --> 00:50:36,520
Take it to the caves.

428
00:50:36,725 --> 00:50:39,558
Make way for the king.

429
00:50:40,595 --> 00:50:44,395
Make way for Theoden.
Make way for the king.

430
00:50:52,307 --> 00:50:56,038
So few. So few of you have returned.

431
00:50:58,814 --> 00:51:01,078
Our people are safe.

432
00:51:02,417 --> 00:51:04,977
We have paid for it with many lives.

433
00:51:05,821 --> 00:51:07,345
My lady.

434
00:51:11,093 --> 00:51:13,357
Lord Aragorn...

435
00:51:13,528 --> 00:51:14,756
...where is he?

436
00:51:16,765 --> 00:51:18,289
He fell.

437
00:51:40,956 --> 00:51:43,925
Draw all our forces behind the wall.

438
00:51:44,092 --> 00:51:47,027
Bar the gate.
And set a watch on the surround.

439
00:51:47,262 --> 00:51:50,356
What of those who cannot fight, my lord?
The women and children?

440
00:51:50,532 --> 00:51:53,126
Get them into the caves.

441
00:51:54,002 --> 00:51:58,871
Saruman's arm will have grown long
indeed if he thinks he can reach us here.

442
00:52:00,909 --> 00:52:04,310
Helm's Deep has one weakness.

443
00:52:04,479 --> 00:52:06,811
Its outer wall is solid rock...

444
00:52:06,982 --> 00:52:10,076
...but for a small culvert
at its base...

445
00:52:10,252 --> 00:52:13,016
... which is little more than a drain.

446
00:52:15,891 --> 00:52:20,055
How? How can fire undo stone?

447
00:52:20,228 --> 00:52:24,722
What kind of device
could bring down the wall?

448
00:52:28,336 --> 00:52:32,329
If the wall is breached,
Helm's Deep will fall.

449
00:52:32,507 --> 00:52:36,034
Even if it is breached, it would take
a number beyond reckoning...

450
00:52:36,211 --> 00:52:38,771
...thousands, to storm the Keep.

451
00:52:38,947 --> 00:52:40,380
Tens of thousands.

452
00:52:40,549 --> 00:52:44,610
But, my lord, there is no such force.

453
00:52:56,565 --> 00:52:59,659
A new power is rising.

454
00:52:59,834 --> 00:53:02,826
Its victory is at hand.

455
00:53:08,510 --> 00:53:10,569
This night...

456
00:53:11,012 --> 00:53:15,346
...the land will be stained
with the blood of Rohan!

457
00:53:15,517 --> 00:53:18,850
March to Helm's Deep!

458
00:53:19,020 --> 00:53:22,456
Leave none alive!

459
00:53:24,993 --> 00:53:27,461
To war!

460
00:53:31,399 --> 00:53:35,859
There will be no dawn for Men.

461
00:53:53,054 --> 00:53:55,113
Look. There's smoke to the south.

462
00:53:55,323 --> 00:53:58,451
There is always smoke rising...

463
00:53:58,693 --> 00:54:02,527
...from lsengard these days.

464
00:54:02,764 --> 00:54:04,356
Isengard?

465
00:54:04,566 --> 00:54:06,431
There was a time...

466
00:54:06,768 --> 00:54:10,295
...when Saruman would walk in my woods.

467
00:54:10,472 --> 00:54:13,839
But now he has a mind of metal...

468
00:54:14,509 --> 00:54:16,943
...and wheels.

469
00:54:17,712 --> 00:54:22,206
He no longer cares for growing things.

470
00:54:22,384 --> 00:54:24,181
What is it?

471
00:54:29,190 --> 00:54:31,385
It's Saruman's army.

472
00:54:31,593 --> 00:54:33,117
The war has started.

473
00:55:11,499 --> 00:55:15,868
May the grace of the Valar
protect you.

474
00:55:48,136 --> 00:55:50,001
Brego.

475
00:56:16,131 --> 00:56:17,325
Arwen.

476
00:56:27,108 --> 00:56:28,905
I have made my choice.

477
00:56:35,350 --> 00:56:38,217
He is not coming back.

478
00:56:39,654 --> 00:56:42,987
Why do you linger here
when there is no hope?

479
00:56:43,925 --> 00:56:46,894
There is still hope.

480
00:56:51,065 --> 00:56:54,831
If Aragorn survives this war,
you will still be parted.

481
00:56:58,239 --> 00:57:01,208
If Sauron is defeated
and Aragorn made king...

482
00:57:01,376 --> 00:57:03,867
...and all that you hope for
comes true...

483
00:57:04,045 --> 00:57:08,744
...you will still have to taste
the bitterness of mortality.

484
00:57:09,017 --> 00:57:12,009
Whether by the sword
or the slow decay of time...

485
00:57:12,187 --> 00:57:15,156
...Aragorn will die.

486
00:57:17,992 --> 00:57:20,517
And there will be no comfort
for you...

487
00:57:20,728 --> 00:57:24,892
...no comfort to ease the pain
of his passing.

488
00:57:27,702 --> 00:57:30,432
He will come to death...

489
00:57:30,605 --> 00:57:33,199
...an image of the splendor
of the kings of Men...

490
00:57:33,374 --> 00:57:38,038
...in glory undimmed before
the breaking of the world.

491
00:57:47,155 --> 00:57:51,091
But you, my daughter...

492
00:57:51,926 --> 00:57:56,954
...you will linger on in darkness
and in doubt...

493
00:57:57,131 --> 00:58:01,192
...as nightfall in winter
that comes without a star.

494
00:58:03,605 --> 00:58:06,005
Here you will dwell...

495
00:58:06,174 --> 00:58:11,077
...bound to your grief
under the fading trees...

496
00:58:12,814 --> 00:58:14,805
... until all the world is changed...

497
00:58:14,983 --> 00:58:19,477
...and the long years of your life
are utterly spent.

498
00:58:27,996 --> 00:58:29,156
Arwen.

499
00:58:35,803 --> 00:58:38,067
There is nothing for you here...

500
00:58:38,740 --> 00:58:40,833
...only death.

501
01:00:14,302 --> 01:00:17,931
The power of the enemy is growing.

502
01:00:18,106 --> 01:00:20,734
Sauron will use his puppet,
Saruman...

503
01:00:20,908 --> 01:00:24,275
... to destroy the people of Rohan.

504
01:00:26,347 --> 01:00:29,976
Isengard has been unleashed.

505
01:00:34,322 --> 01:00:37,689
The Eye of Sauron now turns
to Gondor...

506
01:00:38,826 --> 01:00:41,795
... the last free kingdom of Men.

507
01:00:41,996 --> 01:00:46,399
His war on this country
will come swiftly.

508
01:00:50,104 --> 01:00:53,198
He senses the Ring is close.

509
01:00:53,374 --> 01:00:56,832
The strength of the Ring-bearer
is failing.

510
01:00:57,011 --> 01:01:01,072
In his heart, Frodo begins
to understand...

511
01:01:02,617 --> 01:01:06,485
...the quest will claim his life.

512
01:01:06,654 --> 01:01:08,815
You know this.

513
01:01:09,457 --> 01:01:12,290
You have foreseen it.

514
01:01:14,395 --> 01:01:17,831
It is the risk we all took.

515
01:01:22,170 --> 01:01:26,368
In the gathering dark, the will
of the Ring grows strong.

516
01:01:27,542 --> 01:01:31,979
It works hard now to find its way back
into the hands of Men.

517
01:01:32,146 --> 01:01:37,607
Men, who are so easily seduced
by its power.

518
01:01:37,819 --> 01:01:41,380
The young captain of Gondor
has but to extend his hand...

519
01:01:41,589 --> 01:01:45,650
... take the Ring for his own,
and the world will fall.

520
01:01:48,096 --> 01:01:49,927
It is close now.

521
01:01:50,098 --> 01:01:54,364
So close to achieving its goal.

522
01:01:57,472 --> 01:02:01,101
For Sauron will have dominion
over all life on this Earth...

523
01:02:01,275 --> 01:02:05,405
... even unto to the ending
of the world.

524
01:02:07,248 --> 01:02:09,079
The time of the Elves...

525
01:02:09,283 --> 01:02:11,217
...is over.

526
01:02:12,053 --> 01:02:15,648
Do we leave Middle-earth
to its fate?

527
01:02:17,625 --> 01:02:20,890
Do we let them stand alone?

528
01:02:25,433 --> 01:02:26,798
What news?

529
01:02:26,968 --> 01:02:29,766
Our scouts report Saruman
has attacked Rohan.

530
01:02:29,937 --> 01:02:32,804
Theoden's people have fled
to Helm's Deep.

531
01:02:32,974 --> 01:02:37,001
But we must look to our own borders.
Faramir, Orcs are on the move.

532
01:02:37,178 --> 01:02:39,578
Sauron is marshaling an army.

533
01:02:39,914 --> 01:02:42,041
Easterlings and Southrons
are at the Black Gate.

534
01:02:42,216 --> 01:02:45,617
-How many?
-Some thousands. More come every day.

535
01:02:46,721 --> 01:02:50,282
-Who's covering the river to the north?
-We pulled 500 men at Osgiliath.

536
01:02:50,491 --> 01:02:53,517
If their city is attacked,
we won't hold it.

537
01:02:55,663 --> 01:02:57,858
Saruman attacks from lsengard.

538
01:02:58,032 --> 01:03:00,728
Sauron from Mordor.

539
01:03:02,036 --> 01:03:05,267
The fight will come to Men
on both fronts.

540
01:03:05,439 --> 01:03:07,134
Gondor is weak.

541
01:03:07,308 --> 01:03:10,436
Sauron will strike us soon.

542
01:03:11,179 --> 01:03:13,044
And he will strike hard.

543
01:03:13,481 --> 01:03:17,577
He knows now we do not have
the strength to repel him.

544
01:03:31,465 --> 01:03:33,695
My men tell me that you are Orc spies.

545
01:03:33,868 --> 01:03:36,598
Spies? Now wait just a minute.

546
01:03:36,771 --> 01:03:39,035
Well, if you're not spies,
then who are you?

547
01:03:45,913 --> 01:03:47,642
Speak.

548
01:03:48,749 --> 01:03:51,343
We are Hobbits of the Shire.

549
01:03:51,686 --> 01:03:54,712
Frodo Baggins is my name,
and this is Samwise Gamgee.

550
01:03:55,156 --> 01:03:56,646
Your bodyguard?

551
01:03:56,858 --> 01:03:58,621
His gardener.

552
01:03:59,260 --> 01:04:01,228
And where is your skulking friend?

553
01:04:02,763 --> 01:04:05,061
That gangrel creature.

554
01:04:05,399 --> 01:04:07,367
He had an ill-favored look.

555
01:04:09,103 --> 01:04:11,003
There was no other.

556
01:04:15,109 --> 01:04:17,441
We set out from Rivendell
with seven companions.

557
01:04:20,781 --> 01:04:23,841
One we lost in Moria...

558
01:04:24,919 --> 01:04:26,443
...two were my kin...

559
01:04:26,621 --> 01:04:30,352
...a Dwarf there was also.
And an Elf and two Men.

560
01:04:30,558 --> 01:04:34,460
Aragorn, son of Arathorn,
and Boromir of Gondor.

561
01:04:39,467 --> 01:04:41,230
You're a friend of Boromir?

562
01:04:43,671 --> 01:04:45,161
Yes.

563
01:04:46,240 --> 01:04:47,332
For my part.

564
01:04:53,848 --> 01:04:56,783
It will grieve you then to learn
that he is dead.

565
01:04:58,819 --> 01:05:00,286
Dead?

566
01:05:00,488 --> 01:05:02,513
How? When?

567
01:05:02,790 --> 01:05:05,418
As one of his companions,
I'd hoped you would tell me.

568
01:05:05,760 --> 01:05:09,594
If something has happened to Boromir,
we would have you tell us.

569
01:05:12,333 --> 01:05:18,795
His horn washed up upon the riverbank,
about six days past.

570
01:05:19,006 --> 01:05:22,100
It was cloven in two.

571
01:05:23,711 --> 01:05:27,112
But more than this, I know it in my heart.

572
01:05:29,150 --> 01:05:30,947
He was my brother.

573
01:06:19,900 --> 01:06:22,869
Boromir!

574
01:06:23,404 --> 01:06:25,269
Boromir!

575
01:06:29,510 --> 01:06:33,276
This city was once the jewel
of our kingdom.

576
01:06:33,447 --> 01:06:37,110
A place of light and beauty and music.

577
01:06:37,284 --> 01:06:39,616
And so it shall be once more!

578
01:06:42,189 --> 01:06:44,817
Let the armies of Mordor know this:

579
01:06:45,026 --> 01:06:49,395
Never again will the land of my people
fall into enemy hands.

580
01:06:53,200 --> 01:06:58,866
This city of Osgiliath
has been reclaimed for Gondor!

581
01:06:59,240 --> 01:07:01,208
-For Gondor!
-For Gondor!

582
01:07:01,375 --> 01:07:04,208
-For Gondor!
-For Gondor!

583
01:07:12,920 --> 01:07:15,684
Good speech. Nice and short.

584
01:07:15,890 --> 01:07:18,791
Leaves more time for drinking!

585
01:07:19,093 --> 01:07:23,291
Break out the ale! These men are thirsty!

586
01:07:26,734 --> 01:07:28,895
Remember today, little brother.

587
01:07:29,070 --> 01:07:32,062
Today, life is good.

588
01:07:36,243 --> 01:07:37,835
What?

589
01:07:38,212 --> 01:07:39,679
He's here.

590
01:07:42,883 --> 01:07:44,714
One moment of peace,
can he not give us that?

591
01:07:44,885 --> 01:07:45,909
Where is he?

592
01:07:46,087 --> 01:07:49,545
Where is Gondor's finest?
Where's my first-born?

593
01:07:50,124 --> 01:07:51,819
Father!

594
01:07:56,697 --> 01:07:59,063
They say you vanquished the enemy
almost single-handedly.

595
01:07:59,233 --> 01:08:02,634
They exaggerate.
The victory belongs to Faramir also.

596
01:08:04,105 --> 01:08:07,006
But for Faramir, this city
would still be standing.

597
01:08:07,808 --> 01:08:10,106
Were you not entrusted to protect it?

598
01:08:10,277 --> 01:08:12,302
I would have done,
but our numbers were too few.

599
01:08:12,480 --> 01:08:14,175
Oh, too few.

600
01:08:14,682 --> 01:08:17,082
You let the enemy walk in
and take it on a whim.

601
01:08:19,286 --> 01:08:22,278
Always you cast a poor reflection on me.

602
01:08:22,490 --> 01:08:24,720
That is not my intent.

603
01:08:24,925 --> 01:08:28,691
You give him no credit,
and yet he tries to do your will.

604
01:08:32,066 --> 01:08:34,967
-He loves you, Father.
-Do not trouble me with Faramir...

605
01:08:35,136 --> 01:08:37,900
...I know his uses, and they are few.

606
01:08:38,072 --> 01:08:41,667
We have more urgent things to speak of.

607
01:08:42,843 --> 01:08:45,277
Elrond of Rivendell has called a meeting.

608
01:08:45,446 --> 01:08:48,313
He will not say why,
but I have guessed its purpose.

609
01:08:48,482 --> 01:08:52,282
It is rumored that the weapon
of the enemy has been found.

610
01:08:54,522 --> 01:08:56,786
The One Ring.

611
01:08:59,560 --> 01:09:04,224
-lsildur's Bane.
-lt has fallen into the hands of the Elves.

612
01:09:04,398 --> 01:09:08,027
Everyone will try to claim it:
Men, Dwarves, wizards.

613
01:09:08,202 --> 01:09:12,332
We cannot let that happen.
This thing must come to Gondor.

614
01:09:14,141 --> 01:09:16,803
-Gondor.
-It's dangerous, I know.

615
01:09:16,977 --> 01:09:20,674
Ever the Ring will seek to corrupt
the hearts of lesser Men.

616
01:09:20,848 --> 01:09:24,750
But you, you are strong.
And our need is great.

617
01:09:24,919 --> 01:09:30,221
It is our blood which is being spilled,
our people who are dying.

618
01:09:30,424 --> 01:09:35,452
Sauron is biding his time.
He's massing fresh armies.

619
01:09:35,663 --> 01:09:37,130
He will return.

620
01:09:37,331 --> 01:09:41,062
And when he does,
we will be powerless to stop him.

621
01:09:41,235 --> 01:09:43,795
You must go.

622
01:09:44,972 --> 01:09:47,065
Bring me back this mighty gift.

623
01:09:47,908 --> 01:09:53,403
No. My place is here with my people.
Not in Rivendell.

624
01:09:53,581 --> 01:09:57,278
-Would you deny your own father?
-lf there is need to go to Rivendell...

625
01:09:57,451 --> 01:10:00,420
-...send me in his stead.
-You?

626
01:10:01,622 --> 01:10:03,556
Oh, I see.

627
01:10:03,724 --> 01:10:07,922
A chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor,
to show his quality.

628
01:10:08,362 --> 01:10:10,330
I think not.

629
01:10:10,531 --> 01:10:13,398
I trust this mission only to your brother.

630
01:10:13,567 --> 01:10:16,468
The one who will not fail me.

631
01:10:33,554 --> 01:10:36,717
Remember today, little brother.

632
01:10:55,109 --> 01:10:57,100
Captain Faramir!

633
01:10:58,379 --> 01:11:00,506
We found the third one.

634
01:11:12,026 --> 01:11:13,994
You must come with me. Now.

635
01:11:25,205 --> 01:11:26,297
Down there.

636
01:11:41,221 --> 01:11:44,122
To enter the Forbidden Pool
bears the penalty of death.

637
01:11:54,735 --> 01:11:56,225
They wait for my command.

638
01:12:01,709 --> 01:12:02,801
Shall I shoot?

639
01:12:04,044 --> 01:12:07,070
The rock and pool
Is nice and cool

640
01:12:07,247 --> 01:12:09,078
So juicy sweet

641
01:12:09,717 --> 01:12:12,686
Our only wish
To catch a fish

642
01:12:12,853 --> 01:12:15,549
So juicy sweet

643
01:12:22,529 --> 01:12:23,928
Wait.

644
01:12:25,432 --> 01:12:28,265
This creature is bound to me.

645
01:12:28,869 --> 01:12:30,803
And I to him.

646
01:12:34,074 --> 01:12:35,371
He is our guide.

647
01:12:40,114 --> 01:12:41,513
Please...

648
01:12:41,682 --> 01:12:43,547
...Iet me go down to him.

649
01:12:54,862 --> 01:12:56,523
Smeagol.

650
01:12:57,531 --> 01:12:59,761
Master is here.

651
01:13:00,968 --> 01:13:02,094
Come, Smeagol.

652
01:13:04,972 --> 01:13:07,600
Trust master. Come.

653
01:13:10,778 --> 01:13:14,612
We must go now?

654
01:13:14,982 --> 01:13:18,418
Smeagol, you must trust master.

655
01:13:18,585 --> 01:13:19,984
Follow me. Come on.

656
01:13:21,221 --> 01:13:22,711
Come.

657
01:13:25,259 --> 01:13:26,419
Come, Smeagol.

658
01:13:26,960 --> 01:13:28,985
Nice Smeagol. That's it.

659
01:13:29,530 --> 01:13:31,020
Come on.

660
01:13:35,469 --> 01:13:37,130
Don't hurt him!

661
01:13:37,304 --> 01:13:40,034
Smeagol, don't struggle.
Smeagol, listen to me.

662
01:13:40,207 --> 01:13:41,504
Master!

663
01:14:06,733 --> 01:14:09,099
That's enough.

664
01:14:12,739 --> 01:14:14,900
Where are you leading them?

665
01:14:16,710 --> 01:14:18,371
Answer me.

666
01:14:19,179 --> 01:14:22,410
Smeagol.
