i might get a lot of C**p from this post but i think he is.

i was reading the appendidcies in the rotk book(which i have never done before) and i read the tale of arwen and aragorn afetr the ending of the ring.  it said that aragorn and arwen got married and he rules gondor for quite a qhile and then it said that aragorn  had the power to well.. kill himslef? and so he did. i rekon he is sellfish to kill himself while arwen is left alone  and none of her kin are with her. i mean how selfish. she gave up her mortality to be with him and now he is beiing slefish and killing himself.. am i right or can someone elxplain this better to me?

Despite the fact that Arwen gave up her immortality she still would have a very long life if Elros is anything to go by.
Aragorn had an extremely long life by human standards. He felt he was beginning to loose his faculties and so would be a useless king and an even more useless husband. He didn't want to be a burden to either his wife or his family.

That is my view anyway.

Yes, its not a case of being selfish is it?  Arwen would outlive him no matter what.  He obviously wouldnt give up on life until he felt like he was becoming feeble or sumsuch thing.  I mean the idea of Aragorn with senile dementia?   ???  nah, dont think so.  Arwen knew what was going to happen.  She was aware of it all along and she knew the day would come when Aragorn would die and she would be left without him.  Yet she still made the decision to go for what she could with him... how romantic is that!  *sigh*  oops ...sorry I digress.

Anyway, with the best will in the world Aragorn could not stay with her forever.  She had to bear the consequences of her actions, which makes her decision in the first place all the more poignant I would say.

Aragorn was dieing there was no sense in prolonging the inevitable he was loosing all sense of reality and didnt want to be a burden on his family he loved his wife but he wasnt the sort of man who would just sit around and let her take care of him he knew it would tear Arwens heart out to leave her but he saw no other way around it.

He knew he was leaving her to live a life with out him and that she would live for many years to come he also knew he would be leaving his children in safe hands and she would be there not only for them but for there childrens children and so forth.

I doubt he did it with out some input from Arwen he loved her to much to do something she hadnt had a say in.

You're right. Aragorn laid himself to rest six-score (is that 60 or 120?) years after they wed. Then Arwen dwelt in Rivendell until winter came (the fact that the 'trees were fading' suggests it was already autumn when she arrived. Before the spring arrived, Lady Arwen laid herself to rest. So it is suggested that not 6 months after Aragorn passed, Arwen did the same.

i think i get why he did it but was a little unfair but wise for his part he went out as a great king not a crazy old person so would be remembered for his valour. its very sad tho especially when she calls out estel estel as he dies  :'( the name she first knew him by. i dont get the bit about the gift of One to men...then he talks about the ring... anyway another thing why does she leave why does she not die with her daugher and son by her side, or is that something to do with she cant die till she loses all she has gained

i dont believe in running unless im being chased.....ILL CHASE YOU LIJ

wooah i completely didn't know that ... i thought in mine it said they married and had kiddies and one of sam's kiddies, goldilocks or something, was their servant.

I think that is quite selfish because Arwen is being left with no one and she would have cared for him and everything so because she loved him and wouldn't care that he was useless and what not.

WOW didn't know that either .... so the Arwen and Aragorn story is like Romeo and Juliet really but on a longer scale ... that is so cute and a bit ... bad  though .... I'm glad that isn't in the film 'after lord of the rings' if they were to do that ... because that would just be tragic to watch .... it is a very tragic ending for them both ... and aragorn shouldn't really have put Arwen in that position ... because it's so emotionally hard and draining to kill yourself or even to attempt ...  :(  poor thing!

Arwen wasn't left with noone she had her daughters and her son. Yes I know they are not Aragorn but a part of him exists in each of them.

Men ? Men are weak ...

« #10 : February 25, 2005, 11:57:04 PM »

because he wasnt an elf

he was a man, a man who would die.

I suspect he was like every old person, who no longer wishes to be a burden on their family, becoming older and more infirm

Aragorn was an honourable man.  Arwen knew this time would come, as did their children.  It wasnt selfish, its was quite unselfish really :-\

well I think it is rather un-understandable .... I mean if I was an old man (hopefully that will never happen seen as i'm a young girl .. quite the oppostie lol) with children and a wife I wouldn't want to leave them ... he was a rich king ... he could be a burden on his servants rather than his kiddies  ;D bargain!

First of all, he didn't kill himself. And second of all, he was still mortal and he would have died no matter what. He didn't exactly KILL himself, he died at 210 years of age and that's quite a long time to live. I know I'm not talking about Arwen in this post, but I just wanted to say that.

I check in every now and then.

It's human nature to not want to live without all your faculties in full working order. If Aragorn felt his were going then I can understand why he decided to hand over the reins to his son and let go of his life.
