I think the end is what's really good about LOTR, the shire being ruined and all. Cause it shows that things almost never turns out the way you think and that's realistic. And that this great story dosn't end whit "and they lived happely ever after" is really good I think. It would take it down to a more common level. And by the way during Tolkiens own life his little hometown was turned into a industry town (or what you should call it) and maybe thats why he wrote that.

It creates an impresion of realism that way,but the shire is not ruined,it just follows the evolution of every living thing and place that grows and has its ups and downs, but as long as there are people willing to work and fight for it,it never dies. And the shire is ultimately saved,I think, judging from what Frodo says at the end, that he had struggled to save the shire, but not for himself.
I was also surprised to see so many images and allegories of death in The Return of the King...

CRAZY IRISH GIRL RULES ALL!!!

« #48 : August 25, 2004, 08:54:49 AM »

I read the end of ROTK in about 30 minutes. I read it so fast that the end didn't really have an effect on me. It wasn't until the next day, when I read it again in class, that I cried my eyes out because Frodo left and the trilogy was over.

I do like the fact that Legolas was single though.....

Yes I am that Crazy Irish Girl that is constantly reminding you of how the English stole away our land and made  us eat potatoes for decades.

sorry but as far as I can tell Legolas has no children I can only read his family history for 3 generations though

Oropher (Fell in The Battle of the Last Alliance) -
Thranduil (King of the Woodland Elves of Mirkwood) -
Legolas (Goes west with Gimli to the Undying Lands)

after watching and reading lotr return of the king, i think that it is better than both of the other films with alot more action involved. the best character in my opinion is gollum, because i think that he so so funny

I agree with this

The great ring shall go now to be an heirloom of the north kingdom
but records of it shall be left in gondor
where also dwell the heirs of elendil
lest a time  come when memory of these great matters shall grow dim

yeah gollum is funny at times.  but he is a deep character.

very deep, and i think the humour was added in the wrong way sometimes.  i do think it was useful to give gollum the sympathy he needs to make his character but he isnt meant to be seen as funny.

the return of the king was a great film with some good climaxes.  it also filled in a lot of gaps and was just all around great.
but i cant really say which is my favorite because they all serve different purposes.  think of it as one long movie and you'll see what i mean.
TTT didnt really have hardly any of the effect that FOTR had.  the settings from each film changed quite a lot.

I love it, but it always makes me sad, also - even better than in the movie, in the book Sam goes after he raised a large family and after his wife passed away into the west, like Frodo. And it is comforting, that the Fellowship assembles again, at least Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Sam and Gandalf.

OK, maybe no one will see this question, but its been a while since ive read the books and im wondering something. theres a point in the movie where elrond says to aragorn, "put aside the ranger, become who you were born to be." is that line in the book?

First read LOTR in 1968. Still my favorite book!

« #58 : March 13, 2008, 09:02:25 AM »

Didn't Elrond say that to Aragorn during Elrond's surprise appearance in Rohan - which didn't happen in the books and Shouldn't Have Happened In The Movie?
