Yes like you Mith I spent ages on the appendices checking out the family trees and the maps etc. I think that they finish off the feeling of a whole alternate reality.

Same here Elbereth.

As soon as I'd finished LOTR I just had to go buy The Hobbit, The Sil, and UT the next day!

I want all the Middle Earth books but at the moment I can just about afford to eat, so it might have to wait  :(

there is so much to learn, I am still learning about stuff, I.E. in the UT, and appendices. I am aiming to have everything written about middle earth, myself, but like alasse, its the money.

Its a sad part, when the scouring of the shire, it does go to show that evil can set in even in the places you really wouldnt think...even the Shire.
I think maybe the latter part of the book should of maybe been put in another book...U.T, perhaps.
Then we wouldnt of had quite the anti-climax with the "long road home" etc.

Perhaps Tolkien was sad to stop at the Rings destruction. He was obviously enjoying writing it all...

I think that he just wanted it to have some kind of closure...I think that I would have been a little miffed had he just left me hanging with the destruction of the ring and not knowing what happened to everyone after...

I think this book is so amazing and emotional and brilliant and shocking a scary and beautiful and everything all rolled into one!

This was the most emotional for me aswell, I cried so much in it and I read it all in one night so at least I got all my tears away at once, rather than it lasting for a few weeks!

My favourite parts in this were... Merry and Pippin in the Houses of Healing because it made me cry, when Eowyn defeated the Withcking because it was at that moment I thought she totally rocked (ooooh sounds like Finding Nemo... sowwy  ), when Eowyn and Faramir met in the Houses of Healing because it was so sweet, and I loved how I really hated Denethor because it is rare books actually make me feel that way but the hatred was so strong it was unbelievable! And I love the turmoil Sam went through before he decided he had to leave Frodo and the "Don't go where I can't follow" part because it was so emotional and made me love Sam's character because he is so loyal and sweet to Frodo, infact I love a lot of Sam and Frodo's parts in this book because there is such strong friendship there it is unbelievable and it is rare to find a friendship that strong anywhere!

Lol, Sorry I have gone on a bit, I just love this book so much!

I agree with you Lady Arwen about everything emotionally wrenching with this book. Tears stream down my left cheeck as I sat in the dentist office, while reading about Farimar and his father.I'm on the last bit of TROTK and it is the language of Tolkien that is incredibly stunning, a breathtaking experience that adds such :'( beauty and breadth to this story.
As if it all really exists, that our memories are being triggered and ignited.

How can anyone not like Scouring of the Shire  :-\  One of my personal favourites.  Not only does it show that evil can come anywhere, but it also shows the hobbits at their best.  Apart from the Fellowship hobbits, up until then all you've seen of the other hobbits is their capacity for food and drink.  You come back from the emotional rollercoaster of Mount Doom and the battle to find that Frodo and Sam and Merry and Pippin are not unique to their breed - all hobbits have that strong undercurrent of stubborn bravery.  I was cheering when I read the bit about the hobbit resistance movement and, I'm not ashamed to admit it, a bit tearful when they release the mayor from his prison cell.  I was also pleased that the story went on for longer, because I didn't want it to end.

Eowyn's story is the one that moved me the most in this book.  She goes through so much and her relationship with Faramir is so human.  I've never been that moved by the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen.  Someone who waits forty years to get his girl is a bit too patient for my liking  ::)

The Frodo and Sam relationship was also very well developed.  Sam's character comes across as so strong and caring.  When Sam carries Frodo and is expecting to carry the weight of the Ring as well ...  :'(  And then lightens the darkest moments with a good earthy quip.  But I was always sad that he never understood Gollum.  I know they had to fall out for Gollum to take the Ring at the end, but I always wish that, somehow, it could have worked out some other way.

I don't think I was really moved by the Arwen and Aragorn bit coz it wasn't mentioned much but I really believed the whole Eowyn/Faramir thing coz it was just so sweet and lovely and I'm a born romantic at heart! I don't know how anyone can wait forty years to get their girl or guy!

Its like in the great stories Mr. Frodo...........

« #24 : May 07, 2004, 02:45:37 AM »

The Return of the King was by far the most amazing in the trilogy! ;D The whole relationship with Eowyn and Farimir was so perfect and sweet. :) They really make a perfect couple.  It was so amazing when Merry killed the nazgul! :o I was cheering through the whole part. Plus all the Frodo/Sam moments were major tear-jerkers! :'( it was so amazing how they stayed strong together even when there seemed no hope for another day. The whole Scouring the Shire pat was definetly needed. If it werent there how could Tolkien end it? Happily ever after the end?!?  >:(No! That would have been dull and meaningless which is very unlike Tolkien anyway. It really showed even after peace and happiness were brought back there was still evil in even the purest place in the world. But still after all there hard work they again fought evil and won. The part in the Gray Havens would have to be the most beutiful thing in the world. I cried until my eyes were red. :'( It was so perfect yet sad and complete and amazing and heart breaking and soul healing all  at the same time. If any of this or any part of the book were left out would it really be the book? Of course not. Still it was the most amazing thing in the world. Ever! So if you can read it !! :) ;) :P ;D

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Of course the ending had to be good with what came before, and i did like the scouring of the shire. It showed that the hobbits aren't completely helpless and can do things for themselves. I hadn't expected Frodo to leave, but it was cleverly and extremely well written.

I came in late to it all...The trilogy and the movies...I had major catch up from Feb to the end of April, reading almost 24/7 and re watching the movies til my eye balls almost fell out. I did this because I wanted to read the trilogy by my 50th birthday. The Return of the King was one of the most stunning works of literature I have ever read. The love between Sam and Frodo is a life long hope for us all. I can't remember exactly where this was, but Sam was in great dispair and he took Frodo's hand in his and placed it to his forehead.
The Gray Havens was devastating for me because of the loss of my own friend and yet it was the best for Frodo. Do you all remember in the movie when Frodo stepped on the ship and his color and joy returned to his face, not seen since the beginning of the films when he was a happy go lucky young man reading in the glenn dancing and drinking with his friends. Thank you for all the great reading on these posts. LadyRobin of the Shire

Aww, this is just the coolest book! >,<

I loved the chapters 'the field of Pelennor' because it was such a beautiful battle sequence. Also loved 'the houses of healing' because the love between Faramir and Eowyn was so romantic - I was miffed they left that out of the movie. :(

But my all-time favourite character in this book is the mouth of Sauron. He sounds so scary, and the way he mocks Gandalf! :-X Also disappointed they left him out...

the battle when they are at the black gates for me....gave me goose bumps...because they just didn't know where Frodo and Sam were...and when the Mouth of Sauron came out with the Mithril armour...that Frodo had been wearing...I was openly weepling at that point....because they at first thought that they're friends had been taken...til Gandalf spoke...and when Frodo tells Sam that at the end of all things...he is glad that they are together...now thats friendship...I have one friend like that....that at the end of things I would like to be with her...give me goosebumps just thinking of that...

the saddest moment is when you think pippin has been killed outside the blackgate and he hears, but dibelieves, the cry "the eagles are coming"
