Welcome to this, a topic about LOTR:  The Fellowhip of The Ring.  Similar to the Movies version of this topic, you can post comments about the books, such as favourite chapter (a la the hobbit topic that exists), characters etc.

What I love to do, is read the Prologue.  Concerning hobbits, Pipe-weed, The Ordering of The Shire ... it's all fascinating to read.  As you said, it sets the story up really well.

I really love FOTR it is really good! I love it because you go to two elf havens and you see the forming of the fellowship! Also you get to grip with the books and the names and places etc. once you have read the FOTR you can't not read the rest! I really love the entering of the charactes and places

The Fellowship is my favourite book, and film,

I love the scene setting, and all the background you get, for instance, Gandalfs speech at the Council of Elrond - it does go on a bit, but you learn a lot from it!.  Its great learning about each character in depth before the story moves on :)

I know that a lot of people don't like the chapter, 'The Council Of Elrond' because they believe that it drags on a bit.  In my opinion, I think that chapter is one of the best in any of the books.  I love reading about Gandalf and his visit to Orthanc, about Thranduil and Gollum escaping from Mirkwood.  And also Boromir's tale, his dreams and so forth.

I understand that it would not be suitable for a film audience (which is why only the most crucial of information was kept in the film), but the chapter in the book could have gone on forever, and I would not have cared.  I love reading about all the characters and how they got to where they were, the little histories etc.

I have to say, that The Fellowship of the Ring is also my favourite book (and my favourite film - ever). It has all the elements in it which book needs. I would have said The Return of the King, but it just doesn't cut the mustard (sorry about the cliché) I mean, The Scouring of the Shire is just such an anti-climax (I think I'll talk further about this in the The Return of the King bit), but The Fellowship of the Ring has everything.
My favourite chapters are The Council of Elrond, because all the information we found out in that chapter was too much to ignore and where we got to meet all the characters, is just wonderful. My second favourite chapter (That's not the No.2 favourite, that is that 2nd No.1 favourite) is The Bridge of Khazad-dum because this is where the fight with Gandalf and Durin's Bane occurs (also my favourite scene in the film).
I doubt I have to tell anyone who my favourite character is. He is just so knowledgable, strong and wise. So noble, so right, so good. There is nothing bad about him, he is willing to let himself die to rid the world of a big terror.

well the book has all the elements of a good story right....a party...a magical ring...evil riders.....a long trip with lots of getting lost...a council meeting with strangers to decide the fate of the world...lots of different ppls...and races...secret travels...evil goblins...monsters.....someone dies...lots of crying...madness...and a parting...that pretty much sums it up...god I love this book...

Well like i said before i think its wonderful!  ;D
Its just so good and the way that Tolkien just brought in new places, characters and objects etc... was just so amazing i did get confused a bit about all the things but its really good once you look back on it!  ;D
I mean this is nothing to do with the book but in the film true Tolkienights notice everybit in the film like when Arwen rides to Frodo some people think shes had her dress changed etc. but its how Elf appear to mortals (please correct me if in wrong) again its just wonderful!

The Shire and places like Hobbiton and Bywater are places that feel so safe and homely to the hobbits.  So when the four hobbits leave The Shire (and Bilbo, on his first adventure - hunting Smaug with the dwarves) the rest of ME feels so alien, so big and unsafe.
