  Wait, isn't that what chalkboards are made out of?  :8o  If so, then I have seen slate up close and to me it just looks black..  :-\  Though I HATE the feeling of chalk, so I try to avoid getting too close..  :P

yes blackboards are made from black slate but I checked and I'm amazed at the variety of colours you can get slate in.

for some reason I have been to several slate quarries and even a couple of slate mines ::) strange pastiem I know but it's something to do on rainy days when on holiday in either the Lakes, Wales or Cornwall (though in cornwall it's tin mines)

Mum and Dad were into mineralogy when I was growing up so we were often in quarries or searching the scree at the base of cliffs. Those two also went potholing but we were deemed too young. Not that I'd have gone, being afraid of heights is not conducive to scrambling up and down 100' ladders.

pot holing is when you go underground in very small spaces.... to see how far you get and what you can find!  IN fact you could say Gollum was a pot holler!  ;D
