First read LOTR in 1968. Still my favorite book!

Remember, in the book Frodo was 50 when he took off on his adventure- but Jackson compressed the 17 yrs from the time of the Long-Expected Party to the start of the Journey down to less than a year. Still, Frodo was 33 at the time of the party, which is older than Elijah Wood was. Now, you could say that hobbits look younger than their human contemporaries, and I guess I couldn't argue that, but still, Frodo was looked up to by the other hobbits in the Company (Sam thought he was the wisest hobbit, with the possible exception of Bilbo), partly because he was older than any of them.
I think that some of the casting decisions were made with an eye toward what would appeal to the intended audience, just as some of the decisions to tweak the story line were done. I think that's why Arwen and Haldir got more face time than in the book. One strong heroine (Eowyn) was enough for Tolkien when he wrote the book (it came out in the '50s, didn't it?), but in the era of Xena , Warrior Princess and Lara Croft , Peter Jackson probably thought another one (Arwen) would resonate well with his audience. And ... he correctly deduced that female viewers would like more looks at Haldir than Tolkien described!
I still wish the character of Faramir had been left as he was in the book.

I don't demand perfection - I will settle for excellence.

Yes, I have to agree with you.

I was talking to a non book reading person the other day about LOTR and they said to me.... well.... why did they give the ring to Frodo.... they should have given it to Sam... obviously!

Just shows how the film changed the dynamics of the characters really.... which is what I was originally getting at I suppose.  In the books Frodo had quite a strong character.... but in the films.... well the less said about that the better really!  They only got away with it because of his blue eyes which appealed to the girlies... dont you think?
