How did you view the "non-humans" before the movies were released ?

for instance, how did you envisage, Elves... Gollum! , hobbits, dwarves, the Nazgul ....

let's see

Elves - tall and elegant also ethereal
Gollum -  a misshappen hobbit very pale with huge eyes
Hobbits -  small and parochial, jovial and loyal
Nazgul -  hard to define, spine chilling, they literally chilled you blood when nearby

Well....

Elves ... They were tall and slim and MOSTLY dark haired (including Legolas!   )

Dwarves...  were shorter but stockier and well muscled with lots of hair!   

Wizards .... very much the same as the film.

Hobbits ....  short and tubby with round faces.  Not really like in the film.

Orcs ...... More like evil, corrupted men rather than monsters.

Nazgul.... hmmm not really much different from the films, other than they got the voices aaaallll wrong imo.

As for Gollum, well he was very much like the Hobbits except for being skinny and wasted.
