Feb 17th - Gwaihir bears Gandalf to Lórien
Feb 16th - The Company leave Lórien on the 30th day of their stay there

:o

HOW irritating!  The Company spent a WHOLE month in Lórien!  Idlely sitting around twiddling their fingers, preparing themselves for the next big step....

On the 14th Feb Gandalf was returned to life.. I cant beleive that Galadriel didnt know this.... and yet... she let the Fellowship sit around... getting ready to go... all the time not letting on that Gandalf would probably arrive the day after they left!!

Imagine if hed arrived sooner.. how would the rest of that journey changed ???  the Amon Hen situation...

Perhaps Galadriel had a bigger hand in the fate of the Ring and Frodo's fate, and Aragorn's destiny ???

What makes you think that Galadriel knew of the time of Gandalf's return then?

If you say Gandalf was returned to life on 14th but didnt get to Lorien until 17th what on earth was he doing for 3 days?  Having his robes cleaned whiter than white then?   :P

No seriously though,  it is a valid question.  Why three days?  What is that about? Especially when he happens to arrive just ONE day after the Fellowship leaving.

perhaps it took 3 days for Galadriel to pick up on the fact he was back with the living. I seem to remember it was galadriel who sent Gwahir to look for him.

Galadriel said that a cloud surrounded Gandalf.   "I cannot see him from afar....... A [conveniently] grey mist is about him, and the ways of his feet and his mind are hidden from me."

:*:  My assumption was that Gandalf the Grey was sent back across the Sea to get his promotion and new marching orders, and then was dropped off naked like a newborn baby.    Then Ghwahir spotted him, picked him up and Gandalf gave him taxi directions to Lothlorien.    There they made him the white robe, with tailor instructions from the Valar.   And apparently, just so happened to be dropped off just one day after the Company left.    That might explain why Galadriel knew nothing about him coming.   But why didn't he catch up with them, then, like he usually did?

I am also unclear as to the Red Ring.   Was this given to him on his way back after being promoted, and hence gave him some of his new "Gandalf the White" powers?  Surely he didn't have this when he fought Saruman the first time.   Saruman, long studier and master of Ring lore, would have spotted it in an instant.

And if all the Nazgul could not attack Lothlorien because of the White Ring, why could merely one of them knock down Gandalf at Minas Tirith, while he had the just as powerful Red Ring?    The Witch King should have been bowing before him, not the other way around.

Probably fodder for another discussion!

Gandlaf was given the red ring by Cirdan when he arrived in middle-earth in around TA1000. He really did die but Iluvatar and/or Manwe intervened because that task he had been sent to do was incomplete. Once this was accomplished he could return to the Blessed Realm

They didn't realise how much time had passed within the forest which is why they were there for so long.

Now this is interesting.
If Gandalf had the Red ring all along, wasn't it supposed to shield him from weariness?
There were several times in the LOR where Grey Gandalf himself went out of his way to say that he was tired and weary.    For example, when he returned to warn Frodo about the ring, he had to sleep first and discuss it in the morning.

Why couldn't he use the Red ring, to "rekindle the heart" of the King of Rohan, the first time he stopped in after escaping from Orthanc, and was in desparate need of help?    :h:

And why, when Bilbo possessed The Ring, which supposedly revealed the other ring-bearers, did he never notice Gandalf's red ring- even when Bilbo was wearing it?    Or Gollum, who was long a ring bearer and questioned by Gandalf.   Surely Gollum would have told this important secret to the Dark Lord while being tortured.     Frodo saw Galadriel's white ring.....but made no mention of Gandalf's.

The Red Ring is the most mysterious to me.

the rings were supposed to be kept secret so that Sauron and his agents couldn't locate them.

Yes. Frodo didn't see Vilya - Elrond's ring - at all, which I think is comparable with him not seeing Gandalf's Narya. I don't think Frodo seeing Nenya is a good comparison because Galadriel revealed the ring to Frodo rather than him just seeing it
