Samwise Gamgee

Aliases: Gardener
Date of Birth: April 6, 2980 Note: There is a discrepancy between "The Tale of Years" (Appendix B), which gives Sam's birth year as 2983, and "The Longfather-Tree of Master Samwise" (Appendix C), which gives his birth year as 1380 S.R. or 2980. The date on the family tree seems more likely to be the correct date for several reasons. First, it is noted that Sam was 96 years old at the end of his final term as Mayor in 1476 S.R., which corresponds with a birth year of 1380 S.R. (2980). Second, on Sam's family tree his sister Marigold's birth year is given as 1383 S.R. (2983), and it is unlikely (though possible) that they were born in the same year. Third, Merry and Pippin are referred to as the "younger Hobbits" (FotR, p. 350) and Merry was born in 2982.

Other: Samwise was the youngest son of Hamfast Gamgee. He led a fairly eneventful life up until his beginnings in the tale of the Ring. Sam was deeply curious about elves, partly because of this, (and partly because he was an eavesdropper), he was selected by Gandalf to accompany Frodo to Rivendell. Elrond also selected him to join the fellowship of the ring. Throughout the journey, Sam proved his loyalty several times over, and without him the quest would have surely failed. After the betrayal by Smeagol to Shelob, Sam saved the ring from falling into enemy hands, and attempted to destroy the Ring himself. Samwise's strength and plain hobbit sense allowed him to resist the lure of the Ring's power, and realise that it was to much a task for him to do alone. After the War of the ring, Sam was elected Mayor of Michel Delving 7 times. He and his wife Rosie Cotton had 13 children before her in Fourth age 82, when he sailed over the sea as the last of the Ring Bearers

lol...sorry to post this late....but ou sed that sam died....he actually sailed out into the undying lands.....as he was a ring bearer....for his part...:p

1482. Death of Mistress rose, wife of Master Samwise, on Mid Years Day. On September 22 Master Samwise rides out from BagEnd. He comes to the tower hills, and is last seen by Elaenor, to whom he gives the Red Book afterwards kept by the Fairbairns. Among them the tradition is handed down from Elaenor that Samwise passed the Towers, and went to the GreHavens, and passed over the Sea, last of the Ringbearers

What I meant was that he must have died sometime and the last living record of him being alive was when he sailed over the sea

Okely dokely.....here's the one for Gimli. I haven't got a picture, all that I could find was one by John Howe, but the same one has been used for the Legolas page 9as it is the both of them). I have posted in the art board asking if anyone has drawn/painted any pictures of him:

If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-Earth for any love, or that the Eldar should receive him, or that the Lords of the West should permit it. But it is said that Gimli also went out of desire to see again the beauty of Galadriel; and it may be that she, being mighty among the Eldar, obtained this grace for him. More cannot be said of this matter.’

Physical Description: Short (although taller than hobbits), bearded and wearing chain mail. Fairly young at the time of the War of the Ring.

Horse: Gimli had no horse, being not overfond of them, and preferred to ride double upon Arod with Legolas, or upon Shadowfax with Gandalf.

Weapon of Choice: Axe

Galadriel’s Gift: Gimli named a single strand of Galadriel’s hair as the gift that he desired. Galadriel granted this wish as the request was so courteous. Gimli treasured this gift above all others – ‘And if ever I return to the smithies of my home, it shall be set in imperishable crystal to be an heirloom of my house, and a pledge of good will between the Mountain and the Wood until the end of days.’
