shame... seems like its gonig to be a long way off now :(

cant see MGM entering into Film Rights negotiations ... whilst theyre trying to sell up :-\ :(

SOny have got MGM, hence sony have got the rights. worrying?

I dont think it'll mean that Sony will necessarily make it... coz they dont own all the rights :-\

and I guess PJ can work for whoever... but it smells of nasty legal wrangles doesnt it :(

OK History Lesson

Back in 1969 Tolkien sold the rights to The Hobbit to pay off a tax bill to United Artists (owned by MGM)  .  MGM then went on to sell the Movie rights to Saul Zaentz (who used them to make the animated Hobbit in 1978)

After many legal wrangles, Saul Zaentz sold the Movie rights onto New Line Cinema after approving a treatment of the rights put forward by Peter Jackson.

However MGM retained the Distribution Rights (something theyve done on a lot of films, and I have also read that they actually only own the Distribution Rights for the US and not the rest of the world!)

NOW... Time Warner (who own New Line Cinema) were putting in a bid to buy MGM.  IF they had gone through and successfully bought MGM they would have owned both the Movie Rights AND the Distribution Rights to The Hobbit

However since they have now pulled out and Sony have reportedly jumped back in (after they themselves pulled out a few months ago) the legal wrangles will continue.

(the reason that everyone wants to buy MGM is that they have a HUGE movie library - which includes the Bond movies... all of which have the potential to be put onto DVD and redistributed on the movie market)

Ian McKellen is on Standby to make the Hobbit, with Peter Jackson!

"Sir Ian McKellen says he and “Lord of the Rings” filmmaker Peter Jackson are “standing by, waiting to find out whether we’ll be heading back to Middle Earth” to make the feature version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” – which, as fans of Jackson’s monumental film series know, remains to be adapted to screen.
“There was a heady moment when the two companies who share the rights (New Line and MGM) seemed to be amalgamating and they would have gone ahead,” notes the esteemed actor, who’d like to play his “LOR” wizard Galdalf again. That didn’t happen, however, and now they’re back to a waiting game. Jackson has been hoping that the “Hobbit” legal matters can be sorted out while he makes his currently-in-production “King Kong.”

Well, I am hoping they make it, or all we'll have is that awful Rankin-Bass animated adaptation.  Elves should not look like  monkeys and hobbits should not look like barrels!  (praying, praying for a new adaptation)

Okay... for anyone wondering... Watch the trailer!!! New Line productions... of course. ;) But if anyone is able to watch MPEG things, then this is a good thing as you'll be able to finally see the trailer like me. ^_^

EDIT: WHOA!!! Though they did stuff from LOTR, it looks too freaking cool!!! 8) ;D
