There And Back Again...

« : December 03, 2003, 02:18:39 AM »

I wasn't sure where to put this...so feel free to move it mods!

After spending seven years making the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson still isn't bored - he apparently wants to make The Hobbit.
According to reports, he said he'd "be keen" to film JRR Tolkien's book, which is set before the films he's just done.

He said: "It would be wonderful to complete the set of films." But it all depends on whether film studio New Line can get the legal rights to the book."

Rings actor Ian McKellen has said he'd love to play Gandalf in The Hobbit.

I've heard that they are going to make the Hobbit as a film as well. They're making a game as well from the Hobbit but I don't think the game will be as good as the Lord of the Rigns trilogy though.

Nothing will even compare to the Trilogy! It was too good! But all the same, The Hobbit (if done by PJ) will be amazing! And something to look forwards too after ROTK!

I can't wait for ROTK as well and the Hobbit as well.

I especially can't wait for the Clothes Show Live next week as well.

of course PJ wants to make it!

BUT, it isnt as simple as that

the ppl who own the "script rights" arent the same ppl who own the distribution rights... and there in starts a long legal tangle!!!

I reckon it'll be years before the lawyers sort it out!!! :(

Hmm exactly EG. And by the time they've got that figured the cast will be complicated as well.

I mean Ian Holm and Ian McKellen aren't exactly getting any younger, and as this is a prequel they will have to look younger than they did in LOTR.
In fact just for that tiny part in the prologue for FOTR where Bilbo picks up the ring they had to give Holm a mini face lift so as to look younger.

But if true YAY I can't wait!

Death is just another path, one that we all must take.

Indeed, but if you read the latest reports, Mark Ordesky (the executive producer, or the man of the money if you want to put it that way) Has promoted lately the idea of it happening not very long after ROTK say a year or two. :o ;D

There was a topic on here before about this, and someone put a quote from PJ saying basically that he was suprised that NewLine had never once brought up the subject with him

It does seem the obvious thing to do though

Weta already have half of the costumes/sets built - The Shire, Orcs, Elves etc,etc So the production costs would be less than normal

If they do do it, I think most fans would be more forgiving if they take liberties with the book, for one thing, the film should be darker, and more in keeping with LOTR

Hey but there's something that I'm already going to hate...in LOTR we had Arwen sticking her nose everywhere....and in the Hobbit we will have LEGOLAS as part of the dwarven company sticking his nose everywhere eh? :o??? please nooooooooooooo!

.....but why would anyone want to HINDER the production of the hobbit?

Time slowed, reality bent, on and on the eggman went

Hey," said Shadow."Huginn or Muninn, or whoever you are. The bird turned, head tipped, suspiciously, on one side, and it stared at him with bright eyes "Say neverermore" said Shadow. "F**k you," said the raven. It said nothing else as they went through the woodland together.

Interesting article in the Sunday Herald ... here's an excerpt:

"Producers New Line Cinema are understandably keen to cash in on their success by pressing on with a dramatisation of the trilogy’s prequel, The Hobbit, while Jackson wishes to use the hundreds of weapons, suits of armour and fantastic props left over from his epic cinematic endeavour as the foundation for a Lord Of The Rings museum in New Zealand. Both projects are now in severe doubt, however, following the refusal of Christopher, eldest of Tolkien’s four children and the author’s literary executor, to give the estate’s blessing.

“The difficulty everybody has is the Tolkien estate and the problem is always a legal one. New Line Cinema doesn’t have the authority to allow the museum to happen and I understand there are issues with The Hobbit rights as well,” said director Jackson. “It’s frustrating, because we want to thank the people of New Zealand for their support and have appealed at various times to do something for the community, but they keep saying no.”

Here's the whole article:
