There has been a response to the letter writing campaign!!

Good news.... though no definate committments!

Quote
Dear Loyal LOTR Fans,

Thank you very, very much for the incredible outpouring of support for LOTR, and your eagerness to see THE HOBBIT.

We, at New Line, are most touched and appreciative of your compliments, and your passion for the remarkable work of the author, the filmmakers, talent, and craftspeople.

We are also, as you, most anxious to see THE HOBBIT realized.

Please be assured that there is, in no way, a crass argument with MGM or anyone over money or rights. In fact, no discussions about any settlement of our respective claims, has been commenced. When, and if, such discussions ensue, be assured that we intend to be equitable and appropriate to the spirit of Tolkien, and THE HOBBIT. We will, as much as possible, "do the right thing", respecting the incredible loyalty and appreciation of the worldwide fans. We hope that MGM will feel the same.

However, we also wish to have the film overseen by the best possible mentors - and, for us, if possible, that means Peter and Fran. They are totally occupied by KING KONG now and, we believe, will be the next twenty-four months, or so.

So our efforts will take time to realize.

Sincerely,

Robert Shaye
 Co-CEO/Co-Chairman

It's optimistic, but mostly it seems like this letter - at least in part - is a polite way of letting us know that 'campaigning' for the film to happen isn't really going to get anywhere or make it happen any faster.
I can only imagine how many letters they have gotten about this.  ;D

The Hobbit has a different tone and lightheartedness to it , and that's something PJ would really have to pay close attention to if he directs it. While some of the humor in the LoTR films was well-placed, some of it (the belching and tossing jokes, for example)  were just poorly thought out. (imo)

Still, PJ is the man for the job. Not only because he's proved he can well-visualize Middle Earth and (for the most part *cough* Faramir *) it's characters, but also because I think he's earned the right to film The Hobbit.

HOW DO?

« #216 : May 18, 2004, 09:01:04 PM »

Are they actually making "The hobbit"?  Cos personally I dont think they should, cos they've had the climax and everything of the whole of tolkiens works and blah blah and no way could "the hobbit" be anything as drmatic as the lord of the rings, so it will just be one big fat let down!!

Since the Hobbit is the pre-emptor of LOTR, I dont see how it could possibly be a let down!  It features many different characters... and a  DRAGON!!  NOw that on its own has got to be worth seeing ;D

Yes, I must say that I think the idea of making a film of the Hobbit is an excellent one.

Imagine if Peter Jackson gets the opportunity to create a dragon how fantastic that would be!   ;D

Bow down to the Trees!!!!

Elijah Wood on Radio 1 this morning was talking about The Hobbit movie saying tht he hopes that it is made because he is worried about the fans having withdrawal symptoms this christmas. He also said that it would be silly for him to try for a part in it and that he wouldnt want to play someone like bilbo 1 coz he has already played frodo so it would be weird for him and the fans and 2 he thinks no actor could match up to the preformance given by Ian Holm as Bilbo.
