The Sil would almost be impossible to make a film of, as basically it isnt a story in it's own right, but more rather a collection of stories and histories. To make it flow into one story would really mean assassinating the book.

I know you're right, but there is still a part of me that would love to see some of those stories on screen. ::)

Maybe some sort of mini-series would serve the purpose better... some things are doable by film and some just aren't given justice in a three-hour slot.

A mini series of each of the stories!!  I always said they should make a LOTR miniseries, but not like star wars on cartoon network where it's animated  :-X

The Silmarillion - I hope no one ever attempts to bring this to film, and especially not as a tv mini-series. (shudder). There are very few miniseries in the fantasy genre that have not been - for the most part - cheesy.
The Sil is too involved, too beautiful, too tragic, too epic, and I fear it would be ruined. There are too many parts (The Music, The War of Wrath, and so on) that I don't think could ever be captured well on film. Plus there is  not enough dialogue to copy and/or go by, so a huge amount would have to be completely made up.
IMO, the Sil should forever remain only a book.

I know there are certain 'parts' of the Sil that people have said they wouldn't mind seeing made into film, like the story of Beren and Luthien as it's own film, etc. Yet I don't feel that filming chunks of the Sil would work either. Without the history that comes before (for example) stories like Beren/Luthien and Turin Turambar, so much would be confusing and lost in the telling. While it worked well to show a brief glimpse of the Last Alliance battle at the beginning of the FOTR film, (as a means of setting up what came after)I think it would be impossible to 'brief up' the necessary history if only a portion of the Sil was adapted to screen.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but WETA has said they will only work on a production of THE HOBBIT if PJ directs the film. This makes sense, for WETA made the designs for LOTR and the films should 'look alike'.
I'm all for a HOBBIT film, but only if PJ does it.
I would love to see Mckellen as Gandalf again, but Ian Holm is (I agree) just too old now. That works fine for the very brief shots where he is younger in the LOTR film, but probably wouldn't work for THE HOBBIT.

I feel that if PJ isn't going to be directing The Hobbit, then it shouldn't be made at all.If he directs it it will have the seem realistic feel as LOTR and if someone else directs it, they will change it too much. Ian McKellen should play Gandalf again, and i imagine he would! As for Ian Holme, i dont think he could pull of being a young Bilbo!

you know, everyones on about how they think that ian holme shouldnt play bilbo, but i tihnk that with his face taped as in LotR and a brown wig he could pull it off quite nicely! after all, whenever i read the hobbit now, i do picture him as biblo. and even before i never imagined bilbo as a very young hobbit.

Yeah, it will take a long time, 'cause wasn't PJ gonna make King Kong first?  I heard that, but I think The Hobbit should be first priority lol.

I think it would be so cool if they did make a film about the Hobbit.  Of course, I don't think it would be the same if they used different actors from the Lord of the Rings.  It would be nice if they are able to keep the original actors because when I read the books now, and imagine it in my head, I imagine the characters as the people who played them in the films.  I don't know if anyone else is like that ;D

I would love to see the Hobbit on the big screen.  It would give us something else to look forward to when Return of the King Extended Edition DVD has been released ;D
