Possibly beefing up (hum - wrong term there but I can't think of a better one right now) Arwyn's character was meant to pander to feminists? Although Eowyn is strong enough by herself to satisfy those who want a PC count. It was one of the slight dampers of the book when I first read it that this great love interest sat in the background sewing flags for three books and only turned up when everything was sorted out. But then I'd get caught up in the story and write myself into it somewhere so that Aragorn never had to worry about her anymore any way
