I think my favorite of his is the one of Luthien.  There is always such a dream-like quality to his paintings and that quality works particularly well for that character.

Thanks for the links people. I'll look for one when I can.

I saw some of his paintings at the exhibition in London in January. I loved his drawings. I think there was one drawing of the Shire there and it was really gorgeous.

i love Alan Lee's work, i prefer it over John Howe's (though his is great also).  I think my favourite has to be the Gates Of Moria one.  It just looks as i imagined it :)

I love Alan Lee's work, I got to do an art Study board on any artist I wanted, So I chose Alan Lee, it's so much more interesting when you actually like the art.

In the middle of a gun fight...
In the center of a restaurant...
They say, "Come with your arms raised high!"
Well, they're never gonna get me,
And like a bullet through a flock of doves...

I love Alan Lee's work - those muted tones. It reminds me of Arthur Rackham's illustrations.

Hi, i have got the special edition book brought out in 1991, and has wonderful pictures by Alan Lee. You can see why Peter (Jackson) wanted the film to look like the pictures, truly amazing!!

LOTRUK is the best

« #11 : February 18, 2005, 07:57:09 PM »

I hope it's okay to post this here:

I've just learned that Alan Lee has generously donated a beautiful original LOTR drawing to a benefit auction for The Endicott Studio, running this week on ebay. He's also donated two signed copies of the first edition of his illustrated book LOTR. (Alan is a long-time supporter of The Endicott Studio, and an article on his work appears in the Gallery section of the site.)

Here's the description of the art:
"This orignal drawing by Alan Lee depicts an Elvin Ship at sea. It was features in the book "Poems from Lord of the Rings" published in 1994. The piece measures 8"x12", with the drawing measuring 5"x8". It is signed by Mr. Lee. Also included in the auction is the rare h/c book of poetry that the drawing appears in, signed 'Best Wishes, Alan Lee.' This set is valued between 800-1200.00, but was donated to this auction at it's minimum bid price. This comes from Mr. Lee's personal collection."

About the Auction:
Duirwaigh Gallery is thrilled to present the 2005 'Help Keep Myth Alive' auciton to benefit Endicott Studio for Mythic Art. The Endicott Studio is a non-profit organization, dedicated to myth and its expression through literary, visual, and performance arts, whose mission is to honor mythic artists of the past, support mythic artists working today, and to carry this tradition into the future.
