TTT works well as a cross over book between the first and third as it draws together the relationships and develops the plotline in a way that makes it more subsantial than just a filler IMO. Also, Tolkien further develops the backstory of middle earth through use of illustrating the seperate lineages and ways of the rohan and gondor, as well as more prominant parts of the story such as the march of the ents. IMHO this ability to keep the plot moving but delving greatly into this fantastical world made this an ace book for me.

I must admit when I read it for the first time and I came to the end of the first book in TTT I was well into the story of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. I wanted to get on and read what happened to then. As I got into the second book that was put to the back of my mind and I became engrossed in Sam and Frodo's adventures.

From all of the books I have many many favourite moments and The Two Towers is no exception.

The Voice of Saruman is a memorable chapter as it is really the first time that we meet Saruman (not including a flashback in FOTR) in the flesh. He's one of those characters that is talked about alot during the first two books, and then when we finally meet him it doesn't dissapoint.

And Gandalf breaking Saruman's staff was a powerful imagine in my mind.

The Stairs of Cirith Ungol was another good chapter. I loved it when Frodo, Sam and Gollum are very near to Minas Morgul and then out strides the Witchking and his army. Off on the road to war.

Books don't usually scare me or creep me out. They can get me involved and care for characters, but they don't usually scare me. All the Shelob stuff made me cringe a bit. Was very creepy.

All I'm gonna say is vodka, tunes, LOTR and rock on!

LOTRUK is the best

« #34 : March 15, 2005, 12:38:08 AM »

I also think all the books are verry good. Not just one of theme. They all belong together. I could not make up my mind about the best book.

Just about sums it up. Tolkien only ever wrote LORT as one big book. The decision to split it into a trilogy was down to the pubishers.

Well I agree actually.

It was originally published in one huge novel.  I never EVER thought of it as separate books until I came onto this website.

Choosing one book over another therefore, is impossible for me.  It is just one complete work.

Sorry to disagree with you Beleriel but even though Tolkien intended it to be just one volume his publishers (Unwin) decided to go for the 3 volumes published in 1954, 1954 and 1955 respectively. The first one volume edition was published again by Unwin in 1968.

Fair enough.

What I meant to say was that the volume I had was all in one.  Therefore, I always regarded it as one... does that make sense now?  I must have had that later version.  I read it like that for many years and therefore only thought of it as a single volume.

B if you check out the second hand book stalls or the charity shops you can find a single volume copy for a pound or so.

Got bored with Frodo and Sam in TTT? Thats something I can't really realize since in my opinion they are very special about Frodo and Sams friendship. And Shelobs Lair and Samwise Decision are the best chapter in the whole TTT and drive all the times tears in my eyes, even I read it since I was 12 or so (and thats quite a while ago).

I've just started reading TTT, at last.
Up to now I'm really enjoying it.
