I started to read it again too. I'm up to A Long-Expected Party. Perhaps we could do a 'read-a-long' Project, where members all start reading at once, and then we can talk about whatever part we have just read, and compare our thoughts etc. I've seen it on other forums. I think it would work well here.

'The trees and the ents' said Treebeard. 'I do not understand all that goes on myself, so i cannot explain it to you. Some of us are still true Entsand lively enough in our fashion, but many are growing sleepy, going tree-ish, you might say."

Having just started to read The Fellowship of The Ring, I'm up to the party itself, or more specifically, Bilbo's speech. From the opening passages of the book, you can already tell what sort of legacy Bilbo has created after his disappearance and then sudden return. We learn about the attitude of certain hobbits such as Old Noakes and Daddy Twofoot towards Bilbo and Frodo (partially because of Frodo's connections with the 'queer folk' from Buckland). Some 'respectable' hobbits such as the Gaffer would rather stick with gardening than dangerous adventures (these hobbits being from Hobbiton and Bywater, so having a less adventurous side to them). The chapter as a whole sets up what sort of excitement of created from the announcement of the party and the arrival of Gandalf. I think this is shown more in the book than the film (we can see what preperations have gone into the party from the description in the book, rather than watching a few hobbits hammer pegs into the ground in the film).

And the movie is useful too, because it completes the picture with the visual imagery that some people need in order to enjoy the story even more.I'm especially referring to the incident with the fireworks!
