i love the whole book, my fave character is definately Aragorn (not just bcoz of Viggo mortesen!)
and i love the prolouge lol even if i did want to get to the elves and fighting and stuff, it was a gr8 way to start the book,

im totally addicted to it!  ;D

He stood upon the bridge alone
and fire and shadow both defied;
his staff was broken on the stone,
in Khazud-Dum his wisdom died.

the feelowship is wkd it makes u realise how much you miss it wen at da end of rotk it says the fellowship has ended!!sob, sob :'(

I second that. And its contrast is sharper. I mean you have the pure evil breaking into a peacefull, sleepy world of foolish hobbits from here to yet. In TTT and ROTK everybody is batteling and its dark and creepy, but not that scary like it was when the dark rider aproached in the shire. Well, at least my opinion.

I have just started reading the book, and I have to say that it is really good, much better then the film, and that is something that I never thought I'd say.
I must admit that I have been making so many excuses not to read the book when I saw the size of the bloody thing, but I just can't stop reading it, I'm already half way thru and I only started reading it on sunday. (I know, im a slow reader, but in my defence I do work from 7am untill 7pm Mon - Fri).
The book has so much stuff in it that got cut out from the film (good thing really or you'd be sat in the cinema for about five hours or more), and I noticed that they changed quite a few things.
As far as I rememer in the film, Merry and Pippin didn't plan to go with Frodo and Sam.
But I think that the book is much better because you get more of an understanding of all the characters and of middle earth also.

you'll find that each time you read it you find something new or understand something else in a completely different way. Once you've finished fotr then you can start on TTT :D

I actually can't wait to finish it so I can read TTT, but oh my god, I just read a bit of it now, and there's a song there that takes up about two pages!
And I think thats it's a real shame that they have changed so much of the book in the film, like when Frodo gets stabbed on Weathertop.

but they kept the essence of the book even if some of the details have changed a little. well a lot :D
It's better to think of the films and the books as two completely different entities. That way you don't compare the two detrimentally.

I've finished the book!
I am so proud of myself  ::)
I am now starting on TTT.

The book was so interesting, the details of everything was so good.

The only complaint that I have though is the fact that I've been so into the book since i started that I've even began to talk to everyone in the same way.

It was so funny, the other night I asked my mum's friend where she dwells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where she dwells?!?!?!?!?!?!?
What was I thinking?
She looked at me like I was really wierd, and she asked my mum if I was high!!!!!!!  :o :[ :P

First read LOTR in 1968. Still my favorite book!

« #117 : November 08, 2011, 10:12:10 AM »

Jackson had to make the film appealing to people who had never read the book, so even though the movie trilogy runs over 10 hrs ( right?), he had to simplify the tale.
If you are reading FOTR for the first time I hope you enjoy meeting Tom Bombadil!

It's actually only my second time reading it..  :[

I wondered, since I'm through the first chapter, why there weren't dwarves in the movies until the Council of Elrond?  In the book, dwarves came to help Bilbo get ready for his party and then they left with him after the party..

Like I said, even a 10 hr movie can't contain all the detail that's in a 1200 page book!
