I've aways loved the 3rd chapter becouse of the meeting with the elves.I think that the significant part of the book starts here. Now they know whats written on the map and know part of the perril involved. And ofcource there is Elrond.I love him.I like the describtion of him.it's so good isnt it?

I do find the description of the elves in Rivendell a little odd - it seems hard to imagine that the elves that greet Frodo are the same elves that are singing "Tra-la-la-la-lally, down in the valley!" in this Chapter. Although Elrond, oddly enough, seems much the same.

iv read the hobbit twice though iv read countless bits and bobs here and there on other aspects.

but i have ti say, i think the hobbit at first was more enjoyable than lotr.  its such a great book to start on to get you interested in middle earth.

ever since i read the words "in a whole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit" maybe a few weeks before i saw the fellowship otr i immediately was hooked on middle earth and i think i always will be from then on.

I agree with that though I love the description. When you think about it it's hard. The elves in LORT seem so serious.Espesially Gildor.

What always struck me odd about the elves in Hobbit is that they were using all that magic and mirages to lure Thorin and Company off their course.. and yet they (in FoTR) couldn't even keep one slimy Stoor from escaping their prison.

Waht a bunch of dingalings! :)  HAHAHA!

Was that magik they were using.I thought they were real. And Gollum was more than just a Stoor. He escaped only because of the orc attak.

Yes... I thought the Orc attact was the only reson that he escaped... The elves I dont think were trying to lure the dwarves and bilbo, they were just trying to have a party and the dwarves kept barging in on them.

The whole scenario reminded me alot of the tales of the Will-o-wisps.. the lights in the woods that lure travellers off the path and into the netherworld... a theme that Tolkien uses again later in the Dead Marshes.

Rather hard to imagine the elves just prancing and revelling about in the woods with so many lurking spiders though. .. not when they have the security of their fortress type thingy.. whatever it was called. I forget.

And even without spiders.. Mirkwood seems to me to be a rather lugubrious place non-condusive to partying.

But if you remember the part where it said that there were places in the woods that the magick of the elves was too strong for anything foul to enter...

That and the elves loved the forest even though Souron was so close and the shadow had fallen. It was also said that the spiders didn't do anything to the elves

I like the descrition of Rivendell and Elrond, but i agree that i cannot see the elves singing that song! I would picture them to sing, slow sad songs, with lots of meaning! Overall, tis a great chapter!

You have to remember that even though the elves were very sad in nature they also had a lot of joy and were able to express that in song. As I understand it they also knew how to party. :P
