"Legolas and Arod"

Artist's notes
"Here, I wanted to portray the relationship which seemed to develop straight away between Legolas and Arod at their first meeting. Horses being more subtle animals and elves also being subtle, meant that I had to give the impression of an immediate bond without making it too obvious which was a challenge in itself."

"GAFFER GAMGEE AND THE BLACK RIDER"

Artist's notes
"This is the first picture in my series of Tolkien interpretations. It portrays Gaffer Gamgee talking to one of the Black Riders, who was enquiring about 'BAGGINS' in Hobbiton. I created this picture with acrylic paint, pencil crayon and ink which is what I use in most of my pictures. I composed the picture so that the Black Rider had his back to the viewer to add to the sense of mystery about them at that point in the story."

"WRATH OF THE BRUINEN"

Artist's notes
"This was the second image but not the first attempt. I had already composed the outline and tried to complete it on two previous occasions but wasn't happy and threw them away. The sky was done in watercolour and the rest in my usual mediums."

"RIDE TO EDORAS"

Artist's notes
"This picture was designed around a bluprint of a horse outline I had that I thought would look good in this kind of setting. I gave the sky a polarised effect to make it more 3-dimensional and eye-catching. It was also the perfect chance to hone my cloud painting skills."

"SHELOB"

Artist's notes
"All my previous drawings portrayed events that took place in the first half of the story, so I decided to paint something from the second half. 'Shelob' was designed by looking at a photo of a house spider and giving her a bigger abdomen, fangs and claws on the end of her legs."

"ARWEN"

Artist's notes
"As any artist knows, painting somebody who is beautiful is very difficult because everybody has their own version of beautiful so catering for everybody's taste is virtually impossible. I looked at several pics of models to make her face up and looked at my own arms to do hers. I also tried to add a sense of sadness to her without making her look miserable."
