Had I really known what the diff. genres represented according to him, I would've voted differently..

I voted "Proper Rock"..  But after reading the first post and seeing what is considered "Nu-Rock" I would've voted for that one..

Proper Rock music is very much different to the new stuff- for example, the likes of AC/DC, Guns and Roses and so on sound quite vastly different to Linkin Park, or Godsmack, or bands of that ilk.....they need normally to be separated so that people don't have the mass confusion  that it's one big bubble called rock.....there's many different forms, shapes, sounds and types to rock, and not all are in the classic rock style.

(On the subject of Trivium; we tend to be that supposed 'overly-judgemental' thing because in the most part, Trivium are a band formed of contrived elements of the most popular metal.....they have literally lifted and copied Metallica, Slayer (on the new album's solo playing) and Iron Maiden especially in such a way that it adds nothing new, nothing exciting, and nothing fun to the mix; what it does add however is masss frustration at how a band with talented instrument players can't seem to write a lasting, impressionable, decent song.....they tend to write terrible lyrics (Not even in the good way!) they have guitar solos and bridges that shouldn't be where they are in the songs, and of course in the old days that terrible post-Phil Anselmo shout that takes the complete wee wee out Pantera especially. It tends to be made up en-masse of (especially now) James Hetfield's vocals, Iron Maiden's general basics and Slayer's solo tone.....what I wouldn't mind is if they used this seemingly good combination constructively, and made awesome music, which you'd expect with the elements they have.....but instead they make sub-par music, that gets forced down our throats because Kerrap and (Rusted) Hammer push them there. In my opinion Trivium are ousted from the metal community as a whole because of the senseless shoving of the band down our throats, because of their lack of songwriting ability (I'm not talking just lyrics here) and most of all because of the softcore, Nu-M....erm....'rock' way the band's music comes across.)

(PPS: I personally hate Bullet because IMO they're a bland, boring band with some of the worst vocals, lyrics and songs I've ever heard.....nuff said. Thankfully though, I can ignore them, they're not quite big enough as to be shoved into my face at the mo, so I'm happy enough just ignoring their existance.....I wish Trivium were the same case in that respect.)

(PPPPPPPPS: Whoever changed the poll and added Punk and Ska, I thank you, you're a legend!  8) :D)

Wasn't me :P  And Alkaline Trio, someone, isn't Emo.  If you listen to them, they're further from Emo than you can possibly go!

I would certainly agree that there are different kinds of rock..  I wasn't arguing that..  :-\

I was just saying that I didn't understand your variations of rock as you listed them or even as you defined them..  But I s'pose I should've looked to see what exactly the first post said before I voted away without really reading..  ::)

Is there somewhere that you derived your definitions from or is that just your own interpretation of the different genres of music?  And it's not a criticism, just a question..  ;)  :P  :)

I would say that their new stuff is, their real old stuff (private eye etc) was actually Punk and was pretty good, but stuff like Time to waste and Mercy me for me would fit into the emo genre, add that to the fact that like greenday they have started wearing makeup etc I would call them an Emo band

you might think that its cool to get up on stage
and play rock and roll from your heart and soul
but no one shows up and your songs all suck
and theres no applause and no flying bras
no girls will scream for you and no ones gonna sing along with you

Make-up doesn't make them Emo, lol, thats a stupid thing to say.  And their music is miles away from Emo, the new album is mellow-er than their old stuff, but it's not even close to Emo, it's just punky metal.  If you listen to the lyrics, it's not 'EMO-tional' at all, hardly!!

Yeah, it's my own interpretation, but I'd like to think it's an understandable one given the massive scale that Rock has, the basis was on the fact that most other polls allow for sweeping generalisations in genre- for example, there's nothing similar between Queen and Limp Bizkit whatsoever, but in some polls they would be lumped in together in the same poll without much reason other than the fact that it was convenient for the poll starter at the time.  ;)

Makeup does not make an emo band.....Marylin Manson is far from Emo.....lemme tell you.  ;D :P ::)

(.....however it tends to me to be characterised with whiney singing and falsely overdone lyrics and titles that try to add an aura of mystery and enigma to what is otherwise a boring and bland experience.....

PS: That last passage was edited by someone..... >()

No makeup doesnt make them emo but it is a major contributing factor and as to the lyrics

How can you say they are not emo lyrics?
and they are no-where near punk or metal :D

I am a massive fan of Alkaline Trio, and I know all of their lyrics.  You take one song, to prove it?  The entire 'Time to Waste' album is far from emo.  The lyrics arent emotional at all, if you read them - and UNDERSTAND them - they usually take the p!ss, or they're being weird and odd and strange.

Besides, they can't be Emo as they're good, so ...

Eep! How can I chose? I like loads of stuff! =].
Let's see. I'm more of an 'indie' kid as such, I love bands like Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, The Maccabees, Maximo Park, The Kooks, Morrissey, Placebo, Blur, The Gorillaz, Ordinary Boys, Babyshambles, Franz Ferdinand, Kubichek!, Field Music, The Young Knives, We Are Scientists. My favourite band in the whole world being The Futureheads.
However, I also like: Muse, System of a Down, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Funeral for a Friend, Taking Back Sunday, Panic! At the Disco, Men Women & Children, InMe, James Morrison, Michael Bublé, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Chris Rea..I don't know. I like Indie, I like Rock, I like Britpop, Thrash, Alt, Punk, Classical, Ska..All of them really?

I guess if I really had to chose then I'll have to click "Studenty Alternative", since I suppose that is the definition of "Indie" ?

I'm into a lot, minus cheesy pop, hardhouse, dance, trance, r n b, etc. I'm not really into 'heavy metal' as such...I've tried to like it but it just doesn't excite me.

I guess i had to say heavy metal, but that's because more genres could be included under that category. Proper rock is also a good alternative... The thing is, I'm still a child of the nineties, and I still enjoy grunge the best, my favourite being Nirvana (obviously). But I don't mind, and actually I listen to a lot of System of a Down, Saliva, In Flames etc, but also to Muse, Dead Can Dance, Johnny Hollow and the likes.
So yeah. a hibrid :P
