(Wrote this up in like a few minutes so I apologize for the terribleness of it)

"As history recalls during the dark ages a great pirate ruled the seas. His name was Captain Patrick Holan, or as his crew knew him Swift-Sword. He had been captain of an English fleet. But seeing no profit in that profession he changed his ways. He terrorized ships which came into his sight., and earned the nickname Swift-Sword due to his ruthlessness in battle and how swiftly he attacked ships and dissapeared into the fog.
As an English ship sailed from a new found island. Swift-Sword intercepted it killing all aboard, Stealing all precious items and then sinking the ship. Amongst the items he stole was a strangley shaped emerald.  It would fetch a good price in the next port he reached.

But Swift-Sword his crew and ship never made it to any other port. He dissapeared. Some historians say the ship was caught in a feirce storm and none lived. All taken down to the depths of the sea. Other historians say that Swift-Sword did reach another port. But was killed whistle haggeling the price of the emerald. No one really knows what happened to Swift-Sword.

But a message in a bottle was found and recorded in the archives. It was a map leading to what seemed to be three islands. All named the Whirl-Wind Isles. Signed at the bottom of the map was a simple "S". Many historians and archaeologists tried to find the islands but none suceeded, and without funding it was impossible for anymore groups to try and find them."

The Teacher looked over her glasses and smiled "I hope you have all been listening, Because your coursework for the next two months is to pretand you are indeed explorers trying to find the Whirl-Wind Islands. You must plan your journey. Write diaries of what you see...All to historical accuracy. You must research previous explorations in detail....and finally you may work in groups. You may decide amongst yourselves how you wish to work."

(Basically this Roleplay is indeed weird, But what I am aiming for is that we the character devise such an accurate way of reaching the islands that they are funded and actually do go there. The reason for the title will be revealed in time ^_^)

(Pirates actually still exist in parts of the world, so would that be ok if I was one to hinder the journey?)

Name:  Scratch
Age:  47
Gender:  Male
Description:  He has deep scars in his face, a thick layer of black stubble, and one of his eyes has been gouged out, though he chooses not to wear an eyepatch or antiseptic.  He wears black, torn clothing and boots with a spike on the tip.
Bio:  After he and his crew raided an English ship, he barely got out alive.  It had important people on board, and heavy security with guns.  They entered a kitchen porthole to find seven cooks, waiting for them with knives.  In fear that the pirates would take their lives, they slashed their chopping knives at Scratch, embedding deep scars and scratches in his face, hence his name.  If not for his large German bodyguard, he would not have escaped.  Scratch now scours the sea, raiding, slaughtering and sinking any English on board the ship.  Scratch himself is said to come from Greece, though he speaks only with a slight accent, and he is fluent in English.

Scratch stood on the deck, looking out to sea.  It was pouring with rain and his face dripped with water.  He looked sickly, which was most likely down to his infected eye that was slowly making him seriously ill, and there was a chance that it could kill him.  His German bodyguard, Grike, stood behind him.
"How far to the nearest port, Grike?"  he hissed as he drew a cloak over himself.
"It's hard to say, the storm has concealed any lands in the distance and the captain is lost."
  "Fetch the secondary captain."
Grike obeyed.  Scratch went to the captain who was struggling to keep hold of the wheel.
"You have failed me for the last time, Mr. Smith."  Scratch summoned the secondary captain, and shot Mr. Smith in front of him.  The man collapsed, blood oozing from his mouth and the stain in his shirt spreading like the roots of a plant.  "Get to work, Mr. Fife."

Arise riders of Theoden!  Spears shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
