Well, first clue, and I doubt you need it at all, is that Middle Earth was larger before the war of the ring. The second is that you need to remember the Simarillion's characters. Does that help?   ::)

Finrod - Petty- Girdle - Avari - water - Caranthir - Great City

In order to guess the first and the fifth you've got to look at the map of Beleriand showing the rulers as well as realms. The second and the last are associated with the dwarves. The forth is quite difficult, but there is one Avari elf or Dark Elf in the Silm. Girdle is made by one of the Maia, who married one of the Elves, a Telerin Elf, she is mother of Luthien.

Depends on how hard  they are: your places are of different difficulty to me to guess: e.g. Andram was easy and Nimbrethil harder. If it's like Nimbrethil I don't mind it and prefer it. But if you need to read half the book in search of the characteristic it I don't think I'd like it.

Yeah, some of them are different, and some of the clues are quite "different" as well. I don't think you need to read half the book for them, just a little bit of thought is needed for a couple. In-between ones may be guessable.
