I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

« #15 : March 30, 2006, 05:01:02 AM »

my favourite quote goes something like...'To the world you may just be one person, but to me, you mean the whole world'. I saw that written on a pub wall and i just loved it.

Another Pratchett quote...'If I fell off a cliff I'd have to ask for directions on the way down' along those lines anyway... :D

I think there are some pretty good ones out there (particularly in Dan Brown's books), but, I like to stick with the old favourties...

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

That's one of my favourites too. That, and James Dean's "dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today".
It doesn't sound as good out of the context of the poem, but I also like "and though we cannot make our sun stand still, yet we will make him run" - by whoever wrote To His Coy Mistress (even if his motives for saying it might have been slightly questionable ;)) :)

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow, if I can.

To His Coy Mistress was composed by Andrew Marvell :).

"Nothing endures but change" is a favourite of mine by Heraclitus, not sure why but it comforts me. And, of course, "He who considers more deeply knows that, whatever his acts and judgements may be, he is always wrong" -  Friedrich Nietzsche. There are many more but those two always seem to stick :D

Anne I absolutely love those Pooh quotes  Brilliant. Such a fan of darling Pooh. *Starts singing*

I'm just a little black rain cloud
Hovering under the honey tree,
Only a little black rain cloud,
Pay no attention to little me.

Everyone knows that a rain cloud
Never eats honey, no, not a nip.
I'm just floating around over the ground,
Wondering where I will drip.

*Giggles* Love that song

But my favourite quotes... Oooo now thats more tricky... Im a big fan of Douglas Adams Ill be honest...

"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."

"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move."

EDIT: Just found another one by Adams I like

"That young girl is one of the least benightedly unintelligent organic life forms it has been my profound lack of pleasure not to be able to avoid meeting."

We come to it at last. The great battle of our time

« #19 : April 26, 2006, 03:06:01 AM »

My words fly up, my thoughts remain below:
Words without thoughts never to heaven go.
William Shakespeare, "Hamlet", Act 3 scene 3 :) :)

"Farewell, my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last, on the shores of the sea... Comes the end of our Fellowship. I will not say, "Do not weep", for not all tears are an evil."

""It means only one thing, and everything: cut.
Once committed to fight, cut.
Everything else is secondary. Cut.
That is your duty, your purpose, your hunger...
There is no rule more important, no commitment that overrides that one. Cut.
Cut from the void, not from bewilderment.
Cut the enemy as quickly and directly as possible.
Cut with certainty.
Cut decisively, resolutely.
Cut into his strength.
Flow through the gaps in his gaurd.
Cut him.
Cut him down utterly.
Don't allow him a breath.
Crush him.
Cut him without mercy to the depths of his spirit.
It is the balance of life: death."

Somewhat of a personal motto too. I believe in crushing people utterly if it's warrented.

Dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udûn.

First read LOTR in 1968. Still my favorite book!

« #25 : October 05, 2006, 09:46:30 AM »

This is a quote from a song from the rock era. It is spoken, not sung. Unfortunately, I can't remember the artist or the name of the song! (Maybe some of the other old farts in this room can help me.)
The singer/narrator is eating a big greasy burger in a dive of a place when he realizes that sitting on the stool next to him, is a Martian.

"Now, in 25 years of eatin' hamburgers I ain't never run into no Martians, 'specially not in such a fine scarfin' extablishment as "Eats"!

I just always thought that was funny. And yes, he does say EXtablishment.

I don't demand perfection - I will settle for excellence.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
It's better to be old than cold.
There's more sex between the ears than between the thighs.
Two great myths of our time:
1. Everything called 'natural' is good for you.
2. Everything you read on the Web must be true.

« #26 : October 19, 2006, 02:44:07 AM »

I'd have to say these are my favorite quotes, instead of my earlier post of quotes, though I still like them:

"Fear is only in our minds. Taking over all the time." -  Sweet Sacrifice; Evanescence; Amy Lee

"Momento Mori" - Lemony Snicket (for those who havn't read this great series, or don't remember, it means - Remember you will die.)

Hmmmmmm...wonder if this'll get me into modleing....

"In the consciousness of the truth he has perceived, man now sees everywhere only the awfulness or the absurdity of existence and loathing seizes him." - Friedrich Nietzche

"If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there." - Lewis Carroll

"We live everything as it comes, without warning, like an actor going on cold. And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself? That is why life is always a sketch. No sketch is not quite the right word, because a sketch is an outline of something, the groundwork for a picture, whereas the sketch that is our life is a sketch of nothing, an outline with no picture." - Milan Kundera

"The true way to be humble is not to stoop until you are smaller than yourself, but to stand at your real height against some higher nature that will show you what the real smallness of your greatness is."
- Phillips Brooks

Nietzche is brilliant by the way.
Turns out I also don't have any favourites, but > http://community.livejournal.com/wurds/   < has an awfully good and ever-expanding selection to pick from.

When we hurt each other we should write it down in the sand, so the winds of forgiveness can make it go away for good. When we help each other we should chisel it in stone, lest we never forget the love of a friend.

~ Christian H. Godefroy
