Men ? Men are weak ...

« : December 29, 2004, 05:54:54 AM »

I am beginning to build up profiles of the actors who played the characters in the movies... but it seems unfair to me, and as ultimately a Tolkien fan to stop here.

What I want to do is build up profiles of the characters themselves.

Not of Orlando Bloom or Viggo Mortensen, but of Legolas and Aragorn etc.

I would be grateful therefore, for any help given in building up the family history of these characters, and their role in Middle Earth... and I dont mean just the goodies.

If you think you could write something about the characters of Middle Earth, please post it in here... full credit for your writing will be given.....

As you know my knowledge is not always detailed.... so really I need all your help :)

thanks :)

Samwise Gamgee

Aliases: Gardener
Date of Birth: April 6, 2980 Note: There is a discrepancy between "The Tale of Years" (Appendix B), which gives Sam's birth year as 2983, and "The Longfather-Tree of Master Samwise" (Appendix C), which gives his birth year as 1380 S.R. or 2980. The date on the family tree seems more likely to be the correct date for several reasons. First, it is noted that Sam was 96 years old at the end of his final term as Mayor in 1476 S.R., which corresponds with a birth year of 1380 S.R. (2980). Second, on Sam's family tree his sister Marigold's birth year is given as 1383 S.R. (2983), and it is unlikely (though possible) that they were born in the same year. Third, Merry and Pippin are referred to as the "younger Hobbits" (FotR, p. 350) and Merry was born in 2982.
Race: Hobbit (Harfoot)
Height: 3-4 feet
Date of death: Sometime after the year 61 F.A.
Alignment: Good
Parents: Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild
Siblings: 2 brothers - Hamson & Halfred; 3 sisters: Daisy, May & Marigold
Spouse: Rose Cotton
Date of Marriage: 3019 T.A.
Children: Elanor, Frodo, Pippin, Bilbo, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Merry, Tolman,
Robin, Rose, Daisy, Primrose, and Ruby
Physical description: Short with curly thick, brown hair. Brown worn hands
from garden work.
Residence: Number 3 Bagshot Row; later Bag End
Sword: A sword of Westernesse; later Sting
Pony: Bill the Pony
Galadriel's gift: Box of earth from Lothlorien & the seed of a mallorn tree
Other: Samwise was the youngest son of Hamfast Gamgee. He led a fairly eneventful life up until his beginnings in the tale of the Ring. Sam was deeply curious about elves, partly because of this, (and partly because he was an eavesdropper), he was selected by Gandalf to accompany Frodo to Rivendell. Elrond also selected him to join the fellowship of the ring. Throughout the journey, Sam proved his loyalty several times over, and without him the quest would have surely failed. After the betrayal by Smeagol to Shelob, Sam saved the ring from falling into enemy hands, and attempted to destroy the Ring himself. Samwise's strength and plain hobbit sense allowed him to resist the lure of the Ring's power, and realise that it was to much a task for him to do alone. After the War of the ring, Sam was elected Mayor of Michel Delving 7 times. He and his wife Rosie Cotton had 13 children before her in Fourth age 82, when he sailed over the sea as the last of the Ring Bearers

Anything else you need? I think I could probably get even more info...

Ooh oooh oooh can I do Legolas?
Please...........

*scuttles off to research her hubby*

Here ya go EG
If you need anything else in it just say, I'll be happy to do more
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legolas Greenleaf

Date of Birth: unknown, but in Peter Jackson’s movies, Legolas is indicated to be
2,931. This however has no basis in the book.

Race: Silvan elf, of Sindarin descent

Left Middle Earth: Year 120 of the Fourth Age

Parents: Father is Thranduil, Lord of the Elves of Mirkwood. Mother unknown.

Physical Description: Tall, with long fair hair. He is graceful and fair of face beyond the measure of men.

Weapons: Bow and arrows, and long white knife

Horse: Arod

Galadriel’s Gift: Bow of the Galadhrim and a quiver of arrows

Other: Little is known of Legolas’ early life. In 3018 of the Third Age, he was sent from Mirkwood to represent the elves at the Council of Elrond. During the War of the Ring, he fought alongside the rest of the Fellowship in the battles of the Hornburg and Pelennor Fields. Later he returned to the Glittering Caves with Gimli. Legolas brought elves from the Woodland Realm to Ithilien, and the land that had fallen under the shadow of Mordor became green again under their care. But Legolas always heard the call of the sea, and in the year 120 of the Fourth Age, after the death of Aragorn, he decided to follow his heart. He built a grey ship and set sail down the Anduin, accompanied by his great friend Gimli the dwarf. Together the last 2 members of the Fellowship sailed over the sea into the West.

May I just say something Elfy P? Hope you don't take offence but:

Quote
Note on the hair color of Legolas:

Legolas's hair color is not stated anywhere in the text of The Lord of the Rings. There is one vague description that might be taken to mean that Legolas had dark hair.

Frodo looked up at the Elf standing tall above him, as he gazed into the night, seeking a mark to shoot at. His head was dark, crowned with sharp white stars that glittered in the black pools of the sky behind.
The Fellowship of the Ring: "The Great River," p. 403
However, this passage is ambiguous because Frodo may only have seen the silhouette of the Elf's head in the dark night.

When Sam gives up hope, there is no hope

Sam left the tunnel-side and shrank towards Frodo, and their hands met and clasped, and so together they still went on

SAURON[/u][/i]

Sauron in fair form as Annatar

The Eye of Sauron

Name: Sauron
Meaning of Name: Sauron means “terrible” in Kvenian
Otherwise Known As: Annatar (“the Lord of Gifts” in Sindarin), Enemy, Gorthaur (“Spreading Horror” in Sindarin), He, Lord of the Dark Tower, The Black Hand, The Dark Lord, The Lidless Eye, The Lord of the Rings, The Nameless One, Necromancer.
Date of Creation: Before the creation of the world
Date of Demise: March 25, 3019 of the Third Age
Dwellings: Angband, Isle of Werewolves, Taur-nu-Fuin, Dol-Guldur, Barad-dur in Mordor
Race: Maia
Emblem: Red Eye
Height: Unknown
Alignment: Evil
Parents: N/A
Siblings: None
Spouse: None
Date of Marriage: N/A
Children: None
Physical description: Large lidless eye, glazed yellow like a cat's, engulfed in fire; the slit was described as a window into nothingness.

Biography: Sauron is the creator of the One Ring; which he poured his ‘cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all of Middle Earth’. He is a supreme being, Ainur, created by the thought of Iluvatar (“father of everything”) from Flame Imperishable (hence the lidless fiery eye). He (Iluvatar) is one of the makers of Arda, a visible world, as well as a Maiar. Sauron served Aule the Smith, the Lord of all the beings. He is the embodiment of Evil in “The Lord of the Rings”. Sauron was the greatest enemy of the free peoples of Middle-earth in the Second and Third Ages. Sauron’s treachery began in 457 of the First Age, when he assaulted an Isle of Tol Sirion, there created a harbor of Evil, and ruled over the werewolves. He could easily shape-shift to those of a wolf and other beings. There is a legend in the Silmarillion concerning Beren and Luthien Tinuviel, bringing up the name of Sauron. According to this, “Sauron captured Beren, and killed Finrod Felagun, an elven Prince. But an elven maiden, Luthien, with a werewolf Huan came to rescue her beloved. Sauron took a form of the wolf but lost the fight. Then he took a form of a gigantic bat and hid himself in the woods of Taur-Nufuin till the beginning of the Great Battle.” Melkor (Morgoth) lost the battle and Sauron was unable to anything but yield. He was supposed to be sent to Aman for a hearing; however vanity and stubbornness overcame him. Sauron preferred another escape to disgrace and embarrassment.
Around 1000 (The Second Age), Sauron established himself in Mordor; which means “Black Earth” in Sindarin; there is, however, a similarity with the word “murder”. It was in Mordor that he began building his mighty Barad-dur - meaning “Dark Tower” in Sindarin - a fortress where he stayed for many years. When building the Tower, he made use of his knowledge and skills learnt from Aule. Later he wormed himself into the Nordors’ confidence (an elven tribe). Himself he named Annatar (meaning “the Lord of Gifts” in Sindarin) and took a friendly look, however the temperate interaction did not last long. Sauron intended, with the help of the Nordors, to forge the Rings of Power. However, Sauron’s sinister plans were revealed, and a war (1693 – 1700 Second Age) broke out. Nevertheless, Sauron managed to build his fortress and there, in the fire-mountain of Orodruin, forged the One Ring to control all the other Rings. Sauron’s emblem became a crimson pupil, or an eye without eyelashes; which the orcs drew on their black bucklers. Sauron may have won if it were not for the Numenor’s fleet accompanied by the Dwarves of Moria allied with the Elves of Lorien, but of course he did not win and once again fled and concealed himself in Mordor.
Whilst staying at Dol-Guldur, he was recognized as the Necromancer. In the duration of The Fellowship of the Ring, Sauron was constantly searching for his One Ring, breeding Uruk-Hai, Orcs, and various tortured creatures into large masses, making an army. Sauron’s most loyal servants were The Nine, the Nazgul also known as the Ringwraiths or Black Riders whom were slaves of the Ring and Sauron’s will. The Nazgul were once men but slipped into Darkness as a consequence of their greed and weakness, unable to withstand the power of the One Ring, they became the undead – ‘neither living nor dead’ – The Nazgul. Sauron is said to have ruled Angband – a fortress, which stood on the way to the stronghold of Melkor. It was Melkor who corrupted Sauron and won him over to his dark side. Sauron had a numerous amount of evil plots, earning him the titles of ‘master of deceit and treachery’, however he did accomplish much. His activities included: the creation of the Black Speech, the breeding of the Olog-Hai and what was later the Uruk-Hai; which another of his servants, Saruman, conjured up, and the creation of the previously cited Nazgul. One of Sauron’s many servants, Saruman, is a wizard whom decided to forge an alliance with Sauron and make vast armies for him, though Saruman ended up in the hands (or limbs) of the Ents. The Ring’s existence in itself gave Sauron enough strength to eventually overcome Middle Earth, even though Sauron did not have it. Gandalf and Elrond knew that the only choice was to destroy the Ring, an action which Sauron had never considered, and could not comprehend. To the gratitude and relief of Gandalf and Elrond, on March 25, The Third Age, 3019, the Ring of Power fell into the fire of Orodruin. The ever Watchful Eye lost its valor for ever. But no one suggested that the Enemy, or Evil which he incarnated, completely disappeared. Sauron once again lost his ability to become visible.

Sauron's Biography was written by Lady Sauron.
