First read LOTR in 1968. Still my favorite book!

As ancient elves were kidnapped by Sauron (or was it Morgoth? - it's been a long time since I read  the Sil) and from them he developed the Orcs, I'm betting some of the Entwives were captured and from them came the trolls.
Treebeard says that trolls were made in mockery of Ents, as orcs were of elves. Remember, the Ents in the book didn't look as much like trees as they did in the movie, they were more humanoid. And trolls weren't as bestial in form or intelligence in the book as depicted in the film. The trolls in The Hobbit were quite conversational, not at all like the one in the movie that attacked the Fellowship in Balin's tomb. I know, trolls changed between The Hobbit and LOTR (they were no longer afraid of the sun, for example), but I always pictured them as looking like humans - big ugly ones!

I don't demand perfection - I will settle for excellence.

Two great myths of our time:
1. Everything called 'natural' is good for you.
2. Everything you read on the Web must be true.
