  When I was in San Francisco a few months ago I stayed in a hotel frequented by Japanese tourists. There was a magazine in my room written half in English and half in Japanese with an article in it about the EU.
  In the article was the following joke:
  In Heaven, the police are all British, the engineers are German, the chefs French, the lovers are Italian and the managers, Swiss.
  In Hell, the police are German, the chefs British, the engineers French, the lovers are Swiss and the whole place is run by Italians!
  OK, so where do these stereotypes arise from?

Interesting point, Athelas. Stereotypes have always been there, and no-one really knows what, or where they originate from, or why!

I have a suggestion.  A topic about the Illuminati, this secret organisation (that really exist) that are in world dominance mode.  They control what goes on the news, TV, who starts a war, newspapers, anything you can think of, they are behind it.  They have loads of members, and remember, if you're walking through town, any given person could be a member.  Leonardo Da Vinci was, George W Bush Jr supposedly is, William Shakespeare, Nicolas Flamel, there are hundreds, thousands, or millions even, of them.  And we are all clueless as to who they really are.

I beleive a topic concerning the decision of the welsh eisteddfod being held in Liverpool in 2007 would be interesting. It will be very hotly debated I do think

Can you tell me what is the Welsh Eisteddfod, or who they are? Then perhaps I can talk to the other mods about maybe starting a topic!

The Welsh Eisteddfod is a Cultural festival always held in Wales as he founded it. People from all over the world come here and share their culture. It is held every year. Now as we Welsh founded it it is always held in Wales. In 2006 is it in mid wales but in 2007 it may be in Liverpool. I was thinking it would be interesting to see what people's opinions would be

I'm voting against that one. I'm Irish Republican, from Belfast, and totally for the unification of Ireland.

However it's a sensitive issue for me and others on the forum and I think it's best left undiscussed.

Not debating here but I don't see any reason why Northern Ireland can't be given back to the Irish people.

Because the majority of the people in Northern Ireland didn't want to become part of the Republic of Ireland (they wanted to stay in the United Kingdom); furthermore to that in 1973 a referendum was held in which a majority of the people voted in favour of staying part of the United Kingdom.
(Also, a lot of people worry that if Northern Ireland succedes from the United Kingdom, it could lead to the break up of Great Britain, e.g. Scottish Independence.)

I don't think we should be "shying away" from touchy subjects just because they are sensitive. As long as people show decent respect we can discuss it.

Well, as we always say, if there is something that is going to upset you, then the best thing you can do is to simply not go there.  I think there might be a lot of people who would like to discuss it.

The last time we had a suggestion, which was about religion, we had a poll to see who would like to discuss and who would not.  It turned out that the majority didn't want to discuss about it, so we never did it.

So, we could do a poll and see what people think...
