Has anyone ever researched their family tree ?

Ive just started looking into mine, and just managed to contact a second cousin, who has done loads of research and now I have information on some of my relatives dating back to 1765!!!

Its so fascinating!

I would love to look up my family tree, but I have no idea where to start!

Could you give me some tips you've found useful on it for me?  Because I would love to know who my family are!

yeah Genes reunited  thats where I started... just build up your tree as far as you know.  Then it does matches to other people with the smae people in their tree... Ive found a few relatives through that

Im searching through Birth, Marriage Death records and Cenus' now.... on another site.  You have to pay to do that, but a lot of them offer pay per view.. so you can at least get started...  Once you get really far back, you have to start looking at Parish records I beleive.  Some of them are online too!

the Census' are so interesting.. they tell you who was living in the house and what ages they all were and their occupation!  fascinating stuff!

Just in case anyone was thinking of doing this...  here are some free sites that can help you research

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ - for free birth marriage and death indexs... very good  coz you can cross reference and match particular volume/page references to find other halves of a marriage.

http://www.familysearch.org - from the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.  Have all sorts of references, parish records, the 1881 Census etc...

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/  is free, although you have to pay an £8 annual subscription to contact other members on the site.  Is a great way of finding other relatives who might have done more research than you!  Can build your tree online here..

http://www.genuki.org.uk/ - good for giving you help for specific research sources, and information about an area.

Other than that, there are paying sites...my faves are ...

http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk - has all BMDs from 1834 to present.  Lots of the cenuses from 1841 to 1891.  Some parish records. - unfortunatley have to pay for this.. so depends on how much you want to search

http://www.eroll.co.uk - to search the Electoral role in the last 5 years... you have to pay £9.95 a month, but can pay for one month then cancel the subscription

My mum got into this about a year or so ago and shes done a huge amount since. Last Christmas my dad got her a family tree program for the computer so she just types the relatives in and it draws the family tree out for her.

Eternal Sunshine...

I've started my family tree and gone back as far as my maternal great-grandparents, it's difficult for me to do any researching in local archives as most of my family are in Ireland, so I need to go there... the websites I found weren't particulary useful.
My Dad's Aunt has done alot of research about my dad's side of the family, and has gone really far back. She discovered that our ancestors were actually gypsy's  :P

My grandpa started it 20 years ago. Mum & I took it up we've got to 1695!

Why on earth, I had completely forgotten I'd posted a reply to this and realising I had how could I have posted such a small response?!
Mum and I have gone back quite far in our family history. My dad was adopted and as far as I'm aware, all we know is his birth name and where he was born but that's it. I've tried to have a search every now and then but it comes to nothing.
Mum's side on the other hand, thanks to the "ground work" my great uncle and then my grandpa did over 20 years ago, we have a great basis for researching mum's paternal line. A lot of the men on my grandpa's side going back to 1695, were "fishmongers", members of the "Worshipful Company of Fishmongers" and despite the name, doesn't necessarily mean that they were all fishmongers!
Really interesting stuff.
We really need to go back on my grans side but we keep putting it off..  ::)
