Film rights wrangle may kill off The Hobbit
By KATIE NICHOLL and MATT NIXON in London
05jan04
A WRANGLE over the film rights to The Hobbit could wreck plans for a prequel to the blockbusting Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson is desperate to complete his masterpiece with one final film based on J.R.R. Tolkien's first book.

But the legalities over the film and distribution rights are threatening to derail the project – worth millions of dollars at the box office – and disappoint fans.

New Line Cinema, the company that made the Lord Of The Rings trilogy with Jackson at the helm, owns the movie rights to The Hobbit.

But the distribution rights governing the release of the film belong to United Artists, although New Line has first refusal on producing the movie.

Sir Ian McKellen, who plays wizard Gandalf in the trilogy, has revealed Jackson is trying to obtain the film rights.

"Peter wants to do it, and if he doesn't ask me I'll be very upset," McKellen said.

The New Zealand-born director had been undecided about making a film of The Hobbit, but has confirmed plans to do so.

"I'd be interested in doing it as it would give continuity to the overall chapter," he said.

The author's great-grandson, Royd Tolkien, 34, said yesterday: "I would love to see Peter Jackson make a film of The Hobbit.

"That would be the perfect ending."

Perhaps the mods may want to make a sticky, save on countless... I think PJ should do the Hobbit, anyone heard about the Hobbit? type threads?

Why won't they just let him do it! He should be able to, i mean he did LOTR, it's obvious he would make just as good a job with the Hobbit!  I really hope he gets rights! Would be good if he got Ian McKellen & Ian Holmes again!

i think it would be terrible if the Hobbit isn't filmed, because it would be as great as LOTR, and they could make a lot of money, so they would be dumb if they don't give PJ the rights

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

No one but me can save myself, but it to late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

Do not grieve for those whose time has come...

« #39 : January 05, 2004, 11:02:58 PM »

Well I'm not sure if I want the film to be made or not. The Hobbit has always been one of my favourite childeren's books and I firest read back when I was about 6... Anyway I get the feeling that Peter Jackson will try and make it more dark and bloodthirsty than it really is, so as to equel LOTR which is naturally more dark.
I'm not sure, it's generally meant to be a kind of "fairy tale" book and I'm not sure how Peter can get this aspect and yet still keep the LOTR movie fans happy.

It really would be interesting though (if he obtains the rights) to see what actors he would choose to play the roles. I hope than Ian Mckellen can play Gandalf again as he fits the role so well but I'm not sure how they'll be able to pull of having Ian Holm as Bilbo again. I mean it's a prequel so Bilbo has to look alot younger, and Ian isn't exactly getting any younger. Might be a bit tricky. For that tiny scene in FOTR where Bilbo first finds the ring they had to kind of sellotape back his face so as to give him a mini faceover to make him look younger.... I think it would be quite painful to have that done to him during the whole film! of cource the Gandalf looking younger thing wouldn't be an issue as he is an Istari whihc means he stays in the same shape, neither looking younger or older.  :)

Death is just another path, one that we all must take.

Well if this were true, PJ wouldnt be doing it for starters, as he'll still be wrapping up Kong by then, I could well see this being the opening date for King Kong, but then it's more likely to be a summer release for that film. As for the trailer where did you see it? To see a trailer would mean they would have already filmed some of the film, which would be breaking copyright & licensing laws.

It will definately happen if New Line (or any other studio), gets the exclusive Licensce rights to make the film... however at the moment NOBODY, has these exclusive rights, so we can't say that a film is definately going to be made!
