Hugo Wallace Weaving was born in Austin, Nigeria. His
father Wallace was a seismologist with a multinational oil corporation, which
mean that Hugo lived in Australia, South Africa and England before the family
finally settled in Sydney when he was 16. He spent three years in England
in the seventies, attending Queen Elizabeth's Hospital school in Bristol
but when the family moved to Sydney he completed his education at Sydney's Knox
Grammar School, and enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)
and graduated from there in 1981.
He has appeared in a wide range of stage productions from
Shakespeare to Chekhov, including Noel Coward's Private Lives, John
Webster's The White Devil, Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and Tim
Winton's controversial drama That Eye, That Sky. However he
concedes "I find film more challenging.. sometimes theatre doesn't seen to have
any repercussions at all"
He first came to the attention of British audiences in 1984
when he starred in the excellent Australia mini-series "Bodyline" as Douglas
Jardine, the English cricket captain who ordered his bowlers to bowl short to
counter the attacking brilliance of Australian batsman Don Bradman.
His big screen debut as Student 2 in "Maybe This Time" in 1980
may have passed unnoticed, but he worked steadily in films and TV until
celebrity came via his performance opposite Nicole Kidman in the acclaimed
mini-series "Bangkok Hilton" in 1989
In 1991 he won the Australian Film Institute's best actor
award for "Proof". A further nomination followed for the cult drag comedy
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" in 1994 before he won a
second AFI award for "The Interview" in 1988. He has also been turned into
an action figure twice, once for "The Matrix" and more recently for "Lord of the
Rings"
He went totally unseen in one of his best loved films,
providing the voice of Rex the Sheepdog in "Babe" unlike "Bedrooms and Hallways"
in which virtually all of him is on display as he romps with lover Tom
Hollander.
Theatre director Gale Edwards recalls he was "the boy most
likely to succeed" at drama school. "He was also very loved because he has a
very sunny, positive, outgoing personality .... he's a leader, he has a great
range and is a star in all senses of the word"

- His father worked in the computer industry and moved around
a lot. Hugo spent his childhood in South Africa and England before finally
settling in Australia.
- Sister Anna-Jane Weaving had a brief singing career in
Paris in the mid-80s.
- Starred in two great movie trilogies in the millennium,
both screened at the same time, The Matrix trilogy and the Lord of the Rings
trilogy
