The Portal has just appeared on the TLOTR:UK theme, and I was wondering if there's anyway to turn it off?
-
thats right
its a permanent fixture.
As I said in another topic, the more popular themes will be converted.
-
Right then. I'll have to find a theme on which it's not a feature.
-
yep
so far Ive only converted the Mainsite Blue, Lord of the Rings , New Lotr Black and Imladris
so there are plenty to choose, I think the next I will convert will be LOTR red
-
Is everyone having trouble with the portal? I dont really know what it is...it doesnt seem to be affecting me. Should it be? :-\
-
No not at all... tho if your screen size is small, everything will appear more squished on the portal themes..
the portal is the right and left hand bars basically!
-
I guessed it had something to do with the margins with all the new stuff on both sides. My centre bit looks ok, wide enough for me. lol. I suppose if I had my favourites all stuck down the left side it would look squished though. But it looks good for me.
Just best not post any massive picture files.... he heh heh! :P
-
I"m glad I'm not the only one who dislikes the portal. Not only does it sqush the main content into a narrow strip down the centre of my screen, but it takes stinkin' forever to launch. I suppose it's to do with all the added images and php includes or whatever..but
I won't mince words.
We hates it!

It probably shrinks things into the middle, because your screen is running at a low resolution. On a screen 1024 .. or bigger it will look quite normal, and doesnt take long to load.
As I said before Geeg.... there are ONLY 6 of the 20 themes converted... so you shouldnt have a problem using a theme thats not using the portal. (which actually I notice you are :) )
The portal WILL NOT be going from the themes that currently have it.

Well I use 1024x768px and I think the portal really screws up the forum:
- some of the codings within the portals don't fit in and expand over the edges which I think is sloppy;
- furthermore, the squishing horizontally means the forum is extended quite a bit vertically which results in a lot more scrolling;
- the main section is now only 685px wide (and smaller than that on occasions) which is worse than being on 800x600 - indeed, it entirely defeats the object of going on higher resolutions;
- and some of the codings have messed up a bit.
All in all, I don't like it - and I think the fact that portals are an add-on and not built in to the software is indictative of public support for them.
-
you are the ONLY two that have complained.
The middle screen is BOUND to be smaller. Obviously!
I want to encourage more people to visit the main site information, which many of us have worked hard to accumualte. The portal also gives people more information about the forum, and adds a shout box... all these features are common place on the internet these days... a forum that doesnt use them is behind the times!!
This site has to progress. It has to keep up! The portal will not only help existing users find the main site and useful forum information, but also encourage new users, with all the information they might require.
and..as for add on.. you're wrong!! theyre not an add on, they are built in.. you cant choose to switch them on or off a theme... a considerable amount of work goes into building them into a theme... its not just a switch.
AND.. as I said, there are ONLY 6 of the 20 themes converted... so if you dont like it... you DONT have to use it!! There is something for everyone here.
The portal will NOT be removed from those themes currently converted.. and I WILL BE CONVERTING more of them

Surely that is ridiculously oxymoronic?
I thought the Internet was about choice and accessibility. I think the portal makes the site less accessible and more intimidating - I know many sites which got portals which were subsequently scrapped due to lack of support for them. Furthermore, if you wanted to promote the ideas of the Internet - choice, accessibillity, freedom, etc. - why don't you have a portal and a non-portal variant of each skin in order to keep everyone happy?
No offence, EG, but it's not like this site is a hive of activity - I don't really know which sites you're trying to keep up with, or all these new members which need guiding round.
Also, you mention having something for everyone, but I've already had to change theme twice to avoid the portal, how many more times am I going to have to? If you're going to be converting more of the themes, there won't be something here for those of us who don't want the portal, will there?
-
there are 14 themes you can choose that dont use the portal
there are 6 you cant
um, excuse me for my obvious maths here... but 14/20 is the majority!
(im also currently using a 1024 screen... the forum screen in the middle IS the biggest screen and QUITE usable!)
(as a forwarning.. the next theme to be changed will be the LOTR red)
-
Your incorrect maths is excused - I make it 13/22 that are portal-less. I agree, that's still a majority, but they're all the crappy themes.
I never suggest the middle bit isn't the wider section. What I said was that someone using 800x600 and a non-portal theme has a wider mid-section than someone using 1024x768px and a portal theme.
-
well thats more than obvious!
Ah well, least something good has come out of this disagreement! This is the most youve posted in ages Mith!
-
Any chance we could have one theme set aside to be left portal-free for those of us who have no choice in monitor resolution?
-
there are 13 of them portal free :)
-
sorry.
I got the impression from earlier posts that you planned on eventually doing all of them.
Thanks.
-
I will probably convert LOTR Red... but I doubt Ill bother with the others.
-
Thanks EG.
