Title: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 07, 2006, 08:33:01 PM
What about establishing a new game? It is mainly based upon the map of Middle Earth (including the map of Beleriand). Let me describe it to you.
A person creates a certain route consisting of different points. For instance: Isengard – Fangorn Forest – Anduin – Dol Guldur. And next he represents it in a ‘modified’ form: Iron Fortress – Shepherd – water – Black Magic.
This modified form is obtained by representing points of the route by associated things, one’s associations with the point, characteristics of the point, people who live there, in other words by anything that has something to do with the point. In the above example: Iron Fortress – translation of ‘Angrenost’, which in Rohirric means Isengard; Shepherd is for shepherd of the trees, Fangorn; water means river, sea, ocean that is necessary to cross in order to get to the next point. In this example water is for Anduin; and Black Magic is the translation of Guldur. The others who try to guess may ask more description of the point if necessary. The aim thus is to guess the points of the route. Note that the route is not necessarily straight.
So what do you think of it?  :)

Well, I guess it's worth a shot, and see what happens from there.

Let's begin with the simple one for starters.

Dragon - black squirrels – river – orcs – homely – wind – fog – long bottom leaf

I'd say that was the return journey of Bilbo on his trip to the Lonely Mountain

And so far, I think it's:

lonely mountain - mirkwood - River Langford - Misty Mountains - rivendell - ? - ? - the shire

It's not the journey from Erebor however it repeats many of its points.
The road isn't necessary follows some journey. As for the unguessed ones, try to remember the translation of wind into Elvish and the title of one of TLotR's chapters.  ^*

Dol Amroth - ? - Pelargir - Minas Tirith - Nindalf - Falls of Rauros??
Needed a hint, I s'pose
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Gollum on January 15, 2006, 03:51:33 AM
Indeed it is:
Dol Amroth - ? - Pelargir - Minas Tirith - Nindalf/Wetwang - Falls of Rauros

As for the missing one, think of elvish translations and geographical locations
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 15, 2006, 03:58:19 AM
The missing one is either river Serni or Anduin, isn't it?
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Gollum on January 15, 2006, 04:00:33 AM
Yup, pretty much. Twas the River Anduin Delta (etsir=river mouth).

Your go. :)

wait a second
*confused look on face*
It's changed since I last looked at it. :D

Don't suppose you've got any clues?
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 17, 2006, 08:22:09 PM
Well yes, it contained places that didn't co-exist in the same age, so I decided to re-make it.  :)
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Gollum on January 24, 2006, 12:52:23 AM
hmmm, not completely sure about them, any clues? :)
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 24, 2006, 01:06:09 AM
Well, first clue, and I doubt you need it at all, is that Middle Earth was larger before the war of the ring. The second is that you need to remember the Simarillion's characters. Does that help?   ::)
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Gollum on January 24, 2006, 01:17:31 AM
Well the first bit I knew, but I've never actually got round to reading The Silmarillion. It's just sat on my shelf ever since I bought it to be honest. :[

Post by: Taurendil on January 24, 2006, 01:26:55 AM
Sad  :-\ All right, more clues..

Finrod - Petty- Girdle - Avari - water - Caranthir - Great City

In order to guess the first and the fifth you've got to look at the map of Beleriand showing the rulers as well as realms. The second and the last are associated with the dwarves. The forth is quite difficult, but there is one Avari elf or Dark Elf in the Silm. Girdle is made by one of the Maia, who married one of the Elves, a Telerin Elf, she is mother of Luthien.

Nargothrond - Amon Rûdh - Doriath (Menegroth?) - Nan Elmoth - River Gelion? - Thargelion - Belegost

I think that's right, although I think "water" in ambiguous.

Yep, perfect  :)

Tough one
? - Arvernien - Nan Tathren - Andram - ? - Menegroth?? - ?

Any clues?
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 12:51:57 AM
Designed to be tough :P No clues being given :P

Nan Tathren and Andram are right. Arvenien is a bit general, to be honest...
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 01:20:11 AM
? - Birchwoods of Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - ? -  - ?

Nothing more at the moment, needs time to think

Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 01:33:37 AM
? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - ? - ? - ?

Is correct.

Do you prefer "harder" challenges like this?
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 01:58:36 AM
? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - Forest of Brethil - ? - ?

Depends on how hard  they are: your places are of different difficulty to me to guess: e.g. Andram was easy and Nimbrethil harder. If it's like Nimbrethil I don't mind it and prefer it. But if you need to read half the book in search of the characteristic it I don't think I'd like it.
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 02:01:06 AM
Not Forest of Brethil.

Yeah, some of them are different, and some of the clues are quite "different" as well. I don't think you need to read half the book for them, just a little bit of thought is needed for a couple. In-between ones may be guessable.
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth

Regal Set

? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - Taur-en-Faroth? - Eglarest - Barad Nimras
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 02:09:35 AM
All of those are correct.

Why are you laughing over "Regal Set"?
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 02:16:00 AM
It's just I was searching for some regal set in the books and when realised that you just changed letter order I laughed at meself. Haven't thought of this nice way to conceal the place.  :)

Cape Balar? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - Taur-en-Faroth - Eglarest - Barad Nimras
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 02:18:48 AM
Yeah, I was trying to be a bit originative there - something a little different and more cryptic to the usual clues, I thought. I hoped you might appreciate the anagram. :)

No, not the Cape as such...
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth

Mouth of Sirion? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - Taur-en-Faroth - Eglarest - Barad Nimras

Nice anagram indeed!
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 02:38:22 AM
No, not really Mouth of Sirion either.
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 02:46:54 AM
I seem to begin to guess

Isle of Balar? - Nimbrethil - Nan Tathren - Andram - Taur-en-Faroth - Eglarest - Barad Nimras
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 02:57:44 AM
Indeed the Isle of Balar it is. For those who don't know, these are how the clues relate to the places:

Your turn. :)
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 03:01:56 AM
Yeah, that degree of hardness is good. I only didn't know that pearls were found around Isle of Balar.

My is easier than yours I believe.

Enedh Lond – Kin to Breelanders – alqua – not far and not barrow, not north and not white – flies – Tower of the West
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 26, 2006, 03:38:43 PM
OK, after giving this some serious thought, I think I've got it.

Lond Daer - Dunland - Nîn-in-Eilph - South Downs - Midgewater Marshes - Annúminas
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 26, 2006, 07:17:18 PM
Correct! Was that too hard?

Your turn  :)
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 27, 2006, 11:45:09 PM
No, that was fine, although, I did confuse myself at one point.

KUTM - i anda ailin - stir forever - hills of the shadowy-forest - Dwarf road? - Beorn's toye? - The Brown Fenced Homestead

I think this one is easier.
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 28, 2006, 02:03:31 AM
Easier than your first one  :)

Erebor - The Long Lake - Esgaroth? - Mountains of Mirkwood - Old Forest Road - Carrock? - Rhosgobel
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Mithrandir on January 28, 2006, 02:39:53 AM
All of those are right apart from Esgaroth.

Anagram! Forest River?

Indeed. :P

Well done.

I'm working over the description of Mirkwood and its surroundings that's why it was rather easy   :D

Light silver - Smeagol and Deagol - Naked - adamant - burarum - Last ras - one of the seven - pukel men people
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Gollum on January 29, 2006, 02:52:46 AM
Well off the top of my head I'd say

? - River Anduin - ? - ? - Fangorn Forest - ? - Moria - Dunharrow

but I'll have a better look in a mo.
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on January 29, 2006, 02:57:12 AM
Fangorn is right. Anduin is close, but I didn't mean river itself XD
Others are wrong :-\
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on February 02, 2006, 02:26:39 AM
Hmm... I've found a mistake in one of my previous trips: refering 'Avari' to Eöl the Dark Elf and thus to Nan Elmoth is not correct. Eöl is Sindarin Elf, kin to Thingol and his title the Dark Elf has nothing to do with Avari, the Dark Elves.  :[

? - Anduin or Gladden Fields - ? - ? - Fangorn Forest - Andrast - ? - Paths Of The Dead

For "one of the seven", are we talking rings, or palantiri?

And not sure about others
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on March 01, 2006, 01:50:28 AM
Ah, almost forgot this game(and the route  :P ) Now, let's see.

Light silver - Smeagol and Deagol - Naked - adamant - burarum - Last ras - one of the seven - pukel men people

Gladden Fields - right

Andrast wrong  :-\ (but close to the last point, btw)

Path of the Dead - wrong

One of the seven refers to the palantiri  :)

Adamant. Where that was in the movies for instance?

Last ras - requiresa translation of last from Sindarin into English

That'll do for now  ::)

? - Gladden Fields - ? - Lothlorien - Fangorn Forest - Methedras - Osgiliath - Harrowdale
Title: Re: A Trip around Middle Earth
Post by: Taurendil on March 02, 2006, 01:19:03 AM
Concerning the first: Bilbo: 'As light as a feather, and as hard as dragon scales'

Way from the Gladden Fields to the third point and then to Lothlorien is not straight, but half-round.

Except for Osgiliath where could one find a palantir closer to Methedras?

Pukel-men people are ancestors of people of the Druadan forest. But the original place of their living isn't at all in Harrowdale or else where in Rohan.

Methedras is the southern peak of the Misty Mountains. I mean the palantir that was within the circle of stone [quote

Moria - Gladden Fields - Naked - Lorien - Fangorn - Methedras - one of the seven -pukel men people

On the last - see the original place of living of the DRUadan people. It's not in Rohan.
