Title: Plans to erect a 25ft Ent in Birmingham brings discontent
Post by: EG on May 20, 2005, 03:15:17 AM

Plans for a 25 ft statue of one of Tolkien's Ents to be sited in the centre of Moseley have divided the Birmingham district. Local business and residents hope it will put Moseley on the map, but heritage campaigners say that the Ent will overshadow the village green

The statue has been designed by Tim Tolkien, great nephew of JRR Tolkien, and would be expected to cost £30,000.  The plans are that this would be raised through an internet sale of metalic leaves at the feet of the Ent. Tolkien fans would pay to have their names engraved on the leaves.

great idea but bit rich comparing it to the Eiffel Tower though. Can't see the problem myself plenty of full size trees a way bigger than 25' but it all depends on what it looks like. I would have liked to see both a picture of the green where they propse to situate it and a sketch of said statue.

Well that's the green.  I can see why people might be a bit concerned.   Anything too chunky would swamp it.

hardly a green!  more like a little park...  an Ent would look wierd in the middle of town wouldnt it!  id have thought it better in a bigger village green or in open fields :-\

So do you know how to get your name engraved on the metal leaves?  That would be so cool.  :s:  :*:  :b:  :a:  :g:  :lk:  :fs:  :n:  :h:  :e:  :t:  ^* (How long did it take to get all these smileys?  And where from?)

Well better than a 25' phone mast dsguised as a tree like the one at the top of our hill...stands out like a sore thumb. I think it's a good idea.

Ha ha....is that the one wombourne-way?

It makes me laugh every time i see it (which is generally not a good idea when i'm driving, and liable to crash even when i'm not distracted by the massive tree-like-mast-thing.)

I'm thinking that the ent looks fairly cool, but from the images of the park on that website, it could be a little bit big for the area!

If that is what the final statue would look like I'm not surprised that they're objecting to it.

When I do I will edit this post as it would be an interesting thing to go see.

I think its a good idea, I like the way that they plan on funding it with the leaf engravings, but i dont think that is the best place for it to be situated!! Im sure they could find a bigger space than that, it'll just get in the way because its such a small area!

im not too keen on the model for it...... I think it would be nicer to make a massive mallorn tree with the leaves and names engraved....but perhaps a different location
