We would like to build some sort of mini Encylopaedia here for Tolkien.
We would like to start with the basics...
Can anyone start with telling us as much as possible about Tolkein, then everyuone else add to it??
Either that, or if you know alot about Big T, can you IM it to either Elb, EG, Big D or myself!!
Of course, you will get a mention on the main site for this!!
Thanks in advance.
Spikie and LotrUK team.

Hmm...
JRR Tolkien's full name is John Ronald Ruel Tolkien. He was born 1892 and died 1973. He was a professor at the University of Oxford and taught Anglo-Saxon. (ye old english :P ) He started writing the hobbit when he was grading someones paper. He wrote the Hobbit in 1937 and the lord of the rings 1954-1955. When WWI came about he didn't rush and sign up, he was at Oxford and worked hard in 1915 before he joined the war and when he was done he signed up as a 2nd Lieutenant. As he waited to go, he got married to a woman named Edith on the March 22, 1916 in Warwick. When he was at the western front, he had gotten trench fever and was shipped back to England.

Well, I know that while he was away from the front with trench fever, he began to piece together The Silmarillion. He was born in Bloumfountein (spelling?), South Africa, then the Orange Free State. He met his wife at a school for orphans (which they both were) I think at the age of 16 (someone might want to fact-check his age.) He took 12 years to write LOTR.
That's about all I can pull off the top of my head.

He was called "Tollers" by his mates.

I am currently studying Tolkien and the works of Tolkien at college and thought i would share some information with you all. You all probably know this information but it is here for reference purposes since an encyclopedia is being made.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973), born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, as Cuthien already pointed out. On the 15th of February 1896 Tolkien's father died and his family, himself, his mother and younger brother Hilary all moved to the West midlands, England.
Tolkien excelled with linguistic gifts. He mastered the Latin and Greek, which was the staple fare of an arts education at that time and was becoming more than competent in a number of other languages, both modern and ancient, notably Gothic, and Finnish.
Time for me to leave a gap for others to post information.
Enjoy.
