Well, I've had the new album 'Dark Passion Play' for about a month now and my verdict...
A-MAZE-ING!
I was very skeptical about the new singer first, I thought 'HOW can you have Nightwish without Tarja?"
But oh my word, you can! You can have a BETTER Nightwish without Tarja!
The new singer, maybe not classically trained and opera-style, like Tarja, which I know many people liked Nightwish for. But Tuomas is an amazing songwriter, he's getting better with every album - the lyrics, the music, everything about this album screams Tuomas.
I have to go see them live now, in Birmingham - anhd I can't WAIT!

In terms of music and songwriting, Dark Passion Play is the very best album that Nightwish has made so far- 'The Poet and the Pendulum' is one of their best songs musically, and to be totally and brutally honest,I love the singing also.
I have to say, I was a skeptic, but Anette has come in and done an amazing job, and I also notice that Marco has got more time on this album for singing- which is awesome because I'm a big fan of his other band 'Tarot' in which he's the singer.
Pick of the album for me has to be 'Bye Bye Beautiful' as I knew it'd be an angry, indignant two finger sendoff to Traja, but I didn't expect it to be as raw and heavy as it was- it's the first time I've felt proper excitement and goosebum,ps in a long time about a new song. To be fair to it also, the lyrics are alot tamer than I thought- they actually seem civil; but the music and singing (Mostly Marco's parts.) made it what it is.
I'm going to see them for the second time in April when they come to Belfast, and I honestly can't wait!! Album of the year? I'd say so- it's even more attention grabbing and well written than Iced Earth's 'Framing Armageddon' concept album, which would be my number two.
