I was wondering if it would be possible to put some kind of character map in the "post message" screen so us Tolkies could insert the relevant symbols. I'm alright with acut accents (Ctrl + Alt + vowel), but with anything else I have to go into MSN and use special short cuts for writing them there, or else go to a website and copy them.
I was just about to show you a screen print on the one on Rohan, but it seems to not exist anymore... Anyone, the one we had was a drop down list next to the colour drop down list. The characters you wanted were customisable and when you selected one it would be inserted into your post.
It could be quite a little handy feature, I certainly hope that it's possible.

There's a program you can get that'll sit on your screen with a list of all available accents. Although it appears you now have to pay for it.
Ts cailled FRKEYS, and I got it through my old school. You may be able to get it off of yours if you asked as the licences to apply to installation on students' home computers, if they own the program that is.

I know about these programs, indeed there is character map afterall, but on Rohan, we al agreed that it was great for convenience to have the character map in exactly the same place as where you post.
I had FRKeys at my secondary school, I doubt they'd give me a copy though (not that I really need it with character map) - they're very protective with their computer software...

hmm must admit Ive never seen this done before...
so I'll have to do some research on it... :-\

It was very handy, as I'm sure ou can imagine, for writing Elvish names and the such like in posts. We had to get rid of it due to the fact the code was non-compatible with Proboards Version 4.
I just had a look on some SMF mod sites and it seems as if they don't have anything, so maybe I'm out of luck.
All that would be needed is a drop-down list that inserts a character into the field when you click on it - quite similar to the colour drop down list, really.

im sure its possible
since its possible to write our own bbc
actually do you know quickly offhand the shortcuts for any of the special letters?
there must only be a few we really need.....
-
Good idea! It's annoying to waste time looking for those ó, î, â, û, ú, ï.
I'm all for it :)

Acute accents are simply Ctrl+Alt+vowel. I can't remember diareses and circumflexes (although in some programs you can write them as Ctrl+Shift+: > vowel and Ctrl+Shift+^ > vowel).
I'd have to check Character Map to find out the rest.

I thought they well all ALT+ 3numbers
ie. ALT+136 gives u ê
-
Nevertheless I think it's too inconvenient, I'd simply type u for û and so on
-
what would you do then, when you really wanted an ordinary u ?
-
I think he means is that when he's typing a word like "Drúwaith", it's too inconvenient to find the code (Alt+0250) and instead simply writes "Druwaith".
-
hmmm.... the way I see it tho, is, that you wouldnt be able to switch totally every character on your keyboard, more that if you wanted a ú you would be able to say click on it (as it appeared in some box or other - as the smilies do) to use it..
thats what i had envisaged?
-
I meant I'd type u instead of û

If you go HERE (http://www.omniglot.com/mlcomputing/diacrits_win.htm) and print the page out and laminate it you can just keep it either on the wall behind the computer or just with the computer. It is very easy to refer to then. Which is what I do.

I see wht they mean. make it so U on its own is U. but alt+U is û
