A message from Viggo:
Over the years I have made the effort to read and answer every piece of fan mail that I received. Lately, however, the volume of mail has increased significantly making it practically impossible to keep up with it all and to respond to each piece personally. Although I am grateful for the favorable response that those of us involved in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy have had, it is simply become a bit overwhelming. I find that I have little or no time left for other pursuits and have little free time left for art projects or for spending time with friends and family.
Therefore, as I do not wish to have mail answered for me by others, I have no choice but to say that I will no longer be accepting fan mail after October 31, 2002.
Please do not send anymore letters or cards as it will not be answered. I will, however, continue to honor requests for autographs in person as I have always done.
I thank you for your support and kind thoughts.

This is here in the hopes of doubling your chances at receiving a letter from your idol.
Always include a stamped address envelope(SAE) when writing to an actor as stamps are not cheap when replying to thousands of fans.
Make sure that your SAE is A4 size. This is in case they send you a photo.
Make sure when you mail outside of the UK you include the line 'United Kingdom' at the bottom of your address (after the post code).
If you are writing to someone overseas you cannot send them a SAE because of the currency of the stamps are different. You can get International Reply Slips from the post office but they can be expensive.
Remember that the people who deal with the fan mail have to sort through a few thousand a day and you are not always guaranteed they will find it and read it.
Sometimes it's easier to send them a photo of themselves so they can sign it and return it.
Don't insult an actor and tell them that you want the autograph for charity purposes as they know all too well that your going to put the item on a auction site and sell it for profit.
Make sure when asking for an autograph you let them personalise it with your name, this is so they know your not going to sell it on.
Don't be dismayed! I sent a letter off to Warner Brothers and it took them a whole year to get back to me and send me lithographs. I was only telling them how much I loved a show and they sent me them. I didn't even include a SAE.
Make your letters short and to the point, don't write essays as the actors probably have more important things to do than read you waffling on about how much you fancy them.
Remember just because you don't hear from an actor doesn't mean he/she is ignoring you. They are too busy themselves with filming, theatre, etc... to answer back.
Also it may take easily up to a year for them to answer so don't sit by your letter box hoping for a speedy reply.
Most of all be persistant!

The quickest way to get an answer is to actually go and see them at conventions. Since this is the only time they can give you a moment of their time.
Collectomania and Memoribilla are two of the best places to find Lotr Actors.
You have to pay for autographs at these things, but in the long run it is cheaper and you know you are getting your autographs from the source.
Fake autographs sell for £40 on the net or in shops. £20 for an auto is peanuts and you get to have your photo taken with them which is a bonus.

I've been busy writing to everyone lately, i haven't posted any of them yet. You can't send a S.A.E to america can you, because it would have to have american stamps on it, which you can't buy here? Am i right?
Oh yeh another thing, about this convention thing. It is only in London right?

if you want to send a letter abroad then you can go to the post office and ask for an international reply slip (or something like that) hope that helps! :)

I got something back from Orlando today!!!!!! Its a photocopied picture with best wishes Orlando Bloom BUT.... he wrote "To Kirsty" on it!!!! I'm asuming it was him, coz the writing looks the same and stuff, so i'm very thrilled at that! 8)

Yep, used the address from this topic... :) It took about a month and a half to get a reply and I also sent an SASE, and he used that so glad I did hehe :)
Was a bit odd recieving a letter for me with my handwriting on it hehe!

::) An idea...when sending mail put something on the envelope, there are really incredible stickums to place on envelopes that dress it up. be creative and unique. This is an awesome job everyone has done, with contact information. And even the older fans feel the same way about wanting to write. I know.

- Met and got Elijah's Autograph (I've met Lij, not his auo ::)
- Got Dom's autograph and been within 2 metres of him
- Met, hugged and got the auto of Andy Serkis!
- Been within a metre of Sean Astin - (But forgot the darn camera ::))
- Written a letter to Billy Boyd and received a reply with his auto!!

I wrote to Billy Boyd and Ian McKellen about 6 weeks ago using the address' on the front page of this topic and I'd never wrote to actors before so thought I'd just give it a go. Well, I got a beautiful signed b&w pic from Billy Boyd on saturday there and one from Ian McKellen today (same as the pic aniviel has scanned) ;D

My Dad was on an plane with Sir Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom an he didn't know why people kept going up to them, untill the lady next to him told him an even then he still didn't know who they were or get there autographs! >:( Fool! ;D

Actually Lady, by all accounts, Ian is very accomodating when it comes to answering his fan mail. Just put a stamped addressed envelope in with your letter and you should get a reply from him! Best of luck.
