Im totally unimpressed and saddened :'( to find out that members of this forum are hotlinking to images from this site on their own sites
This seems mostly to be to our stars. These are such small images, I dont actually understand why people dont save them on their own webspace.
You know, copying our files is a compliment.... stealing our bandwidth is down right RUDE and CHEEKY!
-
I did that a couple times, I'll admit that. :[ But I only did that a couple of times and that's it. I'm terribly sorry though if I caused you any trouble on the hotlinking part. =/
-
It is lazy i must say
-
Yeah, very lazy.. And rude.. :o
-
Yes, yes, LAZY & RUDE, completely! Honestly, can people not make their own? Or even HOST their own? It's easy enough! There's Photobucket.com, MSN groups, and various places you lot can host the images! It's somewhat okay to save them on your own computer, then host them, but you do realize hotlinking is just a poor bloody way to thank the lotruk admin for paying for our entertainment? If you need a picture but are unable to host it, just ask, and perhaps I will be able to host it for you! Or even if you would like stars, just ask! Don't be such greedy buggers.
-
Awww!This is very rude!:o
-
Just terrible. You lazy gits :P. better stop hotlinking images to your own sites, u poeple know who u are >(. Its simple make your own cause that way you can be proud of what you can achieve rather than stealing work or images for a matter of fact from here.
EG has made the effort to make this forum as great as possible. At least you poeple should have the descent to respect her and her work.
I am very upset indeed. I thought better of you people :'( :P
-
Ive no problem with people using the stars from this place, or other images, providing they get permission from their makers first.,
but I do have a problem with stealing our bandwidth :(
-
Yea that too. Don't steal bandwidths :P
-
i dont like to sound more stupid than i already am but what's hotlinking?
-
taking the web address (URL) of an image and using it on your site. Rather than saving the image to your own webspace and using that URL
Linking to another site's images in this way, means the host site's bandwidth goes up
If this is done to excess, the site either has to pay more money to continue to host or in some cases face their site being shut down
A little more consideration of this, would avoid these problems, for all people who host sites.
-
Yeah, EG's right..
If the people that are doing this and such, stop doing it, ie, host it on Photobucket etc, OR make their own, it'll make everyone's lives much more easier and happier..
Plus, it's less a risk of this place having to pay more and less a risk of being shutdown if lots of people did this.

people actually do this? :o... the inconsiderate fools... i say we lock 'em in a cage ::)
well i can proudly say that i dont do this... and am not contributing to the problem.

I've taken an image hosted on my daughter's free web site and pasted it to this site...is that ok :-\...(is starting to panic now) erm... If I've done something wrong it isn't intentional :[
-
Of course it wasn't intentional! :)
I think people should just think more carefully and be mor aware :P That's not such a bad idea is it? If they want to use the stars etc from this site, then they should just upload it onto Photobucket etc or make their own.

thats fine dont worry. Your daughter gave her permission no doubt, and the site is free
However if for instance, you daughter put the stars from this site on hers, but kept the urls of the stars as www.lotruk.com etc.... then that would be stealing our bandwidth, which LOTRUK pays for. It isnt illegal, but it is lazy and inconsiderate!

One thing I must say, EG, is that a lot of people are rather ignorant when it comes to things like this. I, for example, took many a month to understand what what right/wrong on here, and it took me along time to even figure out what hotlinking was (though it's been over a year since I figured it out, lol), so perhaps we should put something in the FAQ about it? Not that anyone ever reads the FAQs anyhow ::)
-
yeah good idea :)
-
It's kinda Dumb, think about it, if u copy lets say someone with 2 stars and then their star rating goes to three, ur 2 star pic is gone and has been replaced with a 3, which no doubt u already a copy of. If i wanted to do this I would save the pics to my own comp first.
-
very sensible :)
actually there arent two star and three star images... just one star image, which finds friends ;)
-
If you want stars, the best people to ask are Jezz and Une. They are brilliant for that sort of thing, and I am sure they will help you out if you ask them nicely. :)
-
lol, brilliant? I think not ;) Perhaps not me, anyhow :) Jezz is awesome at that stuff, though :D *pokes at Jezz* But anyways, I think ppl get the picture now. For the mean time I'm locking this and putting it back as a sticky topic, perhaps if there are things a mod would wish to subtract from this topic and put into the FAQs, um, well, here you go ;) :)

Ages ago I hooked you up with an htaccess file that prevented image-linking to any subdirectories in the htaccess-protected directory.
If you want, I can find it again for you and send it along.
