Title: How to avoid Personal Attacks
Post by: Moreta on January 18, 2005, 05:21:24 PM
I got this in an email from a friend and I thought it was incredibly useful so I wanted to share it with all the women on this site. It is a bit grim I know, but it could well help you out one day.

REMEMBER: Noone is completely safe. Age is not a worry to some people out there, a 10 year old can be just as vulnerable as a 20 year old, sometimes more so. There is never a good reason to take stupid risks.

Through a Rapist’s Eyes

A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1. The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle.  They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail or other hairstyle that can be easily be grabbed.  They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair.  Woman with short hair are not common targets.

2. The second thing men look for is clothing.  They will look for woman whose clothing is easy to remove quickly.  Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3. They also look for women on their mobile phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking, because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4. The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 05.00 and 08.30 am.

5. The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman quickly mover her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

6. Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3 – 5 year sentence, but rape with a weapon is 15 – 20 years.

7. If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realise that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

8. These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.  Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon.  So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

9. Several defence mechanisms he taught us are:  if someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in a lift or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like “what time is it?” or make general small talk, “I can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter”.  Now you’ve seen their face and could identify them in a line-up, you lose appeal as a target.

10. If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell “stop” or “STAY BACK”.  Most of the rapists talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back.  Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

They are good tips. Also, carry a can of spray (like impulse) in your bag, because if your under attack, you can use it as a weapon of self defence, (I have managed to escape this way).

Also, if your driving alone at night, its a good idea to make sure all your car doors are locked, because attackers will try and get in your car and get to you that way, if you have to stop at traffic lights, or on a junction.

...And at the weekends, watch out for those bogus cab drivers too. :o

Ohhh yeah, my mum *always* goes on about them.  :8o

Its a scary subject though. I guess on of the best things to do is to not walk home on your own..

...I like that umbrella tip though  ;) Mwahahahahahahah..

Some of those things, I'd just never even considered them before.

Luckily I'm almost never out alone, but you never know

My sister has a rape alarm...I'd either carry one of those or some mustard gas spray stuff

Does anyone know where to get personal alarms from?

I had a scary experience a few weeks ago and could have done with one, but I haven't got a clue where to find one  :8o

I got given mine when I was a nurse!  hmmm not sure if it still works...

sadly, even tho they are effective to the rapist.. Im always worried that ppl take as much notice of them, as they do car alarms!

According to the police you can get them here :

Rape Alarms can be purchased from large department stores, AA shops, and Bettaware magazines.

Oh and most student's unions sell them :)

the shop i work for sells pedometers with panic alarms built in!

i know its a little different but i was almosst mugged by a gang of drunken chavs but i had a wooden sword (bokken- i had been to a martial arts training session) and this scared them off when i held it up and actually hit one of them with it who approached me. also when my sister was in uni one of her friends got attacked and she actually managed to fend off the attacker with her shoe! (she was wearing high heels) so it just goes to show that they are scared of anyone putting up a fight

Careful when out partying girls! This info has been passed to us by Bolton
OPU. A woman at a nightclub on Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who
according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her before dumping her.

Unable to remember the events of the evening, tests later confirmed. The
repeat rapes and along with traces of Rohypnol in her blood, was
Progesterex, which is essentially a sterilization pill. The drug is now
being used by rapists at parties to rape AND sterilize their victims.

Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals. Rumor has it
that Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug.

As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girl's drink. The
girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place
the night before. Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just as easily, is
such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist needn't
worry about having a paternity test identifying him months later.

The drug's effects ARE NOT TEMPORARY- They are P*E*R*M*A*N*E*N*T!
Progesterex was designed to sterilize horses. Any female who takes it WILL
NEVER BE ABLE TO CONCEIVE. The weasels can get this drug from anyone who is
in the vet school or any university. It's that easy, and Progesterex is
about to break out big everywhere.

Believe it or not, there are even sites on the Internet telling people
how to use it. Please forward this to everyone you know, especially girls.
Be careful when you're out and don't leave your drink unattended.

A paedophile (Who at the time I considered a good friend of mine, I didn't know of his intentions..) I once got involved with took me out for a drink once...I didn't drink the coke he bought me as it tasted funny and I'm obsessive about the standard of what I eat and drink. When I told them later my parents (my father is a policeman) were pretty sure he'd drugged it. I've never been tested to see if it was this drug or any similar, but I know I felt funny later after only having a couple of sips.

It's scary the kind of sickos out there, huh? :-\

I'd never heard about those rape alarms... How do they work?

on some there is a pin like on a handgrenade which when is pulled out it releases a really loud noise which varies on the alarm, though some are operated by the push of a button

thank you for saying that, arch enemy. there aren't a lot of guys who would think like that.
the thing with the rape alarms is a really good idea...I wish such things existed where I live, too. But they don't, and women are afraid to say that they were raped because policeMEN alaws tend to think that it was somehow their fault...it's sick, but it happens. so, not only are the rapistst not killed, but they are rarely thrown in jail...

What I do when I go out drinking is making sure my drink it in a bottle so that I can put my thumb over the top of it.  I ALWAYS have my thumb over the top of the bottle when I'm not drinking it :-\

And if you do leave your drink unattended and you want some more, just get your wallet and buy another one instead of risking it :-\ I'd rather pay another £2 something than go back to an unattended drink.

Thanks for posting about this Morry. I have found that useful. When I go to football matches with my uncle, his mates sometimes buy me drinks (they are nice guys but I keep a close watch on my drink) in the pubs. I went to see the Wales v Scotland match last February and we met some Scottish guys. I didn't like the one guy and he bought me a drink. I am deadly serious about this and I'm not making this up. I had a sip of the drink and it tasted really funny. I didn't drink it and I left it at the side and I told my uncle about it.

I've heard about that Ducky and it's horrific to hear that people can be so sick to use a drug like that which can affect a person for life.

Kirstie, I appreciate the fact that it bothers you but personally I feel it massively important that people see this topic. The more women (and I suppose men) that read it the safer more people hopefully should be. If you have a suggestion for a topic name for me to change it to that will still encourage people to read it hen Ill be happy to change it :)

Unfortunately, I'd like to be able to agree, but you're never to young to be attacked. There are sickos out there molesting babies :( There is a myth that aids sufferers can be cured by having sex with a virgin. Young girls, VERY young girls are being attacked because of this  :(

i really hate rapists. like someone tried to rape a 12yr old in my village and then someone tried to abduct a 10yr old from the primary school and now my mum wont let me even walk home from the bus stop by myself. its like, we're supposed to get older and more independent but instead we get less independent because the older we get, the more desirable we get.

the best way to avoid bein attacked is to:

1.dont get in to the situation where u might get attacked. ie) going out l8 at night alone, ya kno the sort..  ::)

2.if u cant avoid it, then take sum1 else, or at least tell sum1. ::)

3.if ur alone and no1 kno's and u get attacked, run.. run hard and run fast and dont look back. :8o

4. if all that fails and they catch up wi u.. fight. ???

thats why it is my dream to get ppl of all ages interested in martial arts of self defence of sum sort.. 8)

u dont hav2 do sum fancy 360 jumping side kick 2 stop urself from bein abducted, jus wack em in the nuts an theyl fall down like a sack of spuds..lol. trust me!  >:(

I wish that was true. I heard a while ago of the untimely suicide of a very close friend from my younger years. She'd been raped and unable to live with it. She was athletic, a synchronised swimmer, and always a spunky young lass, so I imagine she tried all of that. However when you're frightened, and they're empowered by passion, I'm sure there's little it'll help, do you think all attack victims simply fall limp and allow it to happen? The bast*rd who tortured my friend is walking around with her teeth marks deep in his hand. I hope it hurt.

Anyway. A very good defense is to purchase one of those personal security alarms. After Nikki's turmoil I've become paranoid and carry mine everywhere. It emits a shrill high pitched sound when initialised, and it's designed to be painful. The idea is when under attack, you thrust it against the attacker's ear and set it off, they recoil in pain at the sound, giving you time to escape (and possibly get them in the nuts as well if you liked  ;) ) If you're around other people, it'll also get their attention. I've accidentally set it off in Mc Donalds once. All the diners looked at me as if I were having a heart attack, sheer fear on their faces, so it works!

EDIT::

Just read back because I was sure that the rape alarms were mentioned. You want to know where to purchase them. Mine's from Lloyd's chemists, maybe try there. Boots should also do one (Boots do everything these days). Mine also has a torch.. but I can't work out how to turn it on  ???

EDIT EDIT ::Woolworths MIGHT have one as they're pretty close to doing everything (haven't got a pharmacy at woollies yet! LOL!) and try Tesco, Asda, Argos and Savacentre too, just pretty much any shop that likes to specialise in a little bit of everything. A (large) pet shop might have one, since walking your dog at night is a common reason for you to be out on your own away from a busy, built up area. That's what Nikki was doing when she was attacked. Also out doors shops like Millets and Cotswolds might have them too (along with their multi functional knives and walking sticks with blades in for climbing up mountains! XD )

The whole trust is dedicated to the education of Personal Safety.  There are courses to attend, and online advice... including... How to choose a personal alarm, Safety whilst driving, Safety whilst at Home, Safety Out and About, Safety for Kids (http://www.suzylamplugh.org/tips/index.shtml)

AND... of course, you can buy the alarms in their shop

Woah. I only just found this topic, but thanks for all the tips. I normally have perfume on me, is that enough to impale eyesight or does it have to be some kind of spray. And the alarm things are a really good idea, I am going to get one because even though I live in a really quiet area, you never know. Man, I feel quite ashamed now of times when I've been drinking and left my drink just hanging around...damn I really got to stop doing that!

i learned that today in fresno, california an 11 year old girl was gang raped by 12 men, but their defense was that they thought she was 14 years old. it makes me really angry to hear that 12 men could even do something like that and their defense is just... ugh.

Firstly why is there a picture of a strange looking woman in Lessa's post?

Alright that is sickening even if they thought she was 14....is 14 the legal age for sex there or something? Although I doubt it. You cant use a defence for rape. If a woman says no...then it is no...a man has a hand...cant he go w*nk somewhere...disgusting filthy mongrels males are...every last one of them...some less than others...but still I find them disgusting

well, lets not tar all men with the same brush.  Its always the nasty few that should be avoided, but luckily most men are very nice :D
