| GANDALF: |
(smiling) Sam has hardly left
your side
|
| SAM: |
(sitting on the bed) We were
that worried about you, weren't we Mr Gandalf ?
|
| GANDALF: |
by the skills of Lord Elrond (he turns
his head as Elrond enters the room) you're beginning to mend
|
| ELROND: |
Welcome to Rivendell Frodo Baggins
|
An elf on a
horse can be seen riding into Rivendell from afar. We see Rivendell in
the depths of a valley. Frodo walks out onto his balcony and looks out
on Rivendell. He walks around with Sam and suddenly comes across Merry
and Pippin who run to him and they hug, laughing. He suddenly pauses
as he sees a smal figure sitting on a bench writing in a book, it is Bilbo,
very much aged
|
| FRODO: |
(runs over to him) Bilbo!
|
| BILBO: |
(stands up) Hello Frodo my lad
|
| FRODO: |
(runs up and hugs him) Bilbo
|
Frodo opens
up Bilbo's book and sees the title written there
|
| FRODO: |
"There and Back Again... A Hobbits Tale" by Bilbo Baggins
(he flicks through the pages looking at the maps and
drawings and scribing) This is wonderful
|
| BILBO: |
I meant to go back. Wander the paths of Mirkwood,
(he walks over to sit beside Frodo) visit
Laketown, see the Lonely Mountain again (sitting down)
but age it seems has finally caught up with me
|
Frodo
continues to turn the pages until he reaches the map of the Shire.
Bilbo smiles at him, they look at it together
|
| FRODO: |
I miss the Shire. I spent all my childhood pretending
I was off somewhere else... off with you on one of your adventures......(pauses
thinking) My own adventure turned out to be quite different
(they turn to look at each other) I'm not
like you Bilbo
|
| BILBO: |
(half smiles and reaches a hand to
Frodo's face) My dear boy
|
Sam can be
seen packing his backpack
|
| SAM: |
Now what have I forgotten
|
Frodo walks
up to him
|
| FRODO: |
Packed already ?
|
| SAM: |
(stands up startled) No harm in
being prepared
|
| FRODO: |
I thought you wanted to see the elves Sam
(he walks away)
|
| SAM: |
I do
|
| FRODO: |
More than anything
|
| SAM: |
I did. Its just (he looks around
to see who's listening and walks over to Frodo) We did what Gandalf
wanted didn't we ? We got the Ring this far to Rivendell and I thought...
seeing as how you're on the mend, we'd be off soon ..... off home
|
| FRODO: |
You're right Sam (he turns to face
him) We did what we set out to do (He takes the
Ring out of his pocket and holds it out) the Ring will be safe in
Rivendell. I am ready to go home

Scene 24 ~ The Fate of the Ring

|
Elrond and
Gandalf are looking down at Frodo and Sam from a balcony
|
| ELROND: |
His strength returns
|
| GANDALF: |
That wound will never fully heal, he will carry it for the
rest of his life
(he looks at Elrond)
|
| ELROND: |
And yet to come so far, still bearing the Ring, the hobbit
has shown extraordinary resilience to its evil (he
walks over to a carafe of wine)
|
| GANDALF: |
It is a burden he should never have had to bear.
(shaking his head) we can ask no more of Frodo
|
| ELROND: |
(turning to look at Gandalf, speaks
seriously) Gandalf! The enemy is moving Sauron's forces are massing
in the east, his eye is fixed on Rivendell ..... and Saruman you tell me has
betrayed us... (Gandalf looks away folorn) Our
list of allies grows thin!
|
| GANDALF: |
His treachery runs deeper than you know.
(Elrond looks at him frowning) By foul craft Saruman has
crossed orcs with goblin men, he is breeding an army in the caverns of
Isengard. An army that can move in sunlight and gather great distance
at speed. Saruman is coming for the Ring.
|
| ELROND: |
This evil cannot be concealed by the power of the elves.
We do not have the strength to fight both Mordor and Isengard
(Gandalf walks away from him) Gandalf! the Ring
cannot stay here
|
Gandalf looks folorn. He
leans on the balcony and looks out. He sees Boromir riding into
Rivendell, then Legolas and Gimli walking.. all look in wonder at this place
|
| ELROND VOICEOVER: |
This peril belongs to all in Middle Earth they must decide
now how to end.
|
| ELROND: |
The time of the elves is over. My
people are leaving these shores. Who will you look to when
we've gone ? The dwarves ? They hide in their mountains seaking
riches, they care nothing for the troubles of others
