Born Shuan Mark Bean, after leaving school at the age of 16, Sean worked in a number of manual jobs, including his father's welding firm before discovering his vocation as an actor.  He graduated from RADA in London and he made his professional debut as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, appearing in a number of West End stage productions including RSC's Fair Maid of the West, Midsummer Nights Dream and Romeo and Juliet as Romeo, as well as Deathwatch at the Young Vic and Killing the Cat at the Theatre Upstairs.

With his green eyes and blonde hair, he successfully moved into film and television.  Although he has mainly played the archetypal baddy for Hollywood in films such as Patriot Games, Clarissa and GoldenEye he has played an equally plausible good guy on television in roles such as Sharpe and Bravo Two Zero.  Boromir in Lord of the Rings was a move away from the film baddy, followed last year by Odysseus in Troy.

He has also kept his stage acting career going, appearing in Macbeth on tour and in London’s West End to critical acclaim.

He was recently voted the second sexiest man in the UK.  He seems to enjoy this notoriety, commenting, "I don't have any problems with women seeing me as their ideal bit of 'rough'. Why would I?"  But this adulation doesn’t seem to have affected his essential manhood.  He is still a passionate football devotee, being a lifelong supporter of Sheffield United, and is known to enjoy the occasional pint at his local(s).

He has done many of his own stunts, acquiring a scar over his left eye when Harrison Ford accidentally cut him with a boat hook during the final fight scene in Patriot Games.

Random Facts

  • One of 30 successful applicants (out of a field of 11,000) to win a scholarship, he began studying at RADA in Spring 1981. He was awarded a silver medal for his graduation performance in Waiting for Godot in Spring 1983.
  • Since February 2004, has been living in a London hotel after a burst water pipe flooded his house.
  • The only film awards he's ever won are from the Screen Actors Guild, the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics Association; these awards were all for Best Cast Ensemble for The Return of the King...in which he only appeared for three seconds in archive footage.
  • He replaced 'McGann, Paul' in the role of Richard Sharpe in Sharpe's Rifles (1993)after McGann was injured.
  • In a scene midway through Sharpe's Honour (1994) (TV), Sharpe and Marquesa Dorada are galloping down a hill on horseback when they suddenly tumble off the horse and land in the middle of a shallow stream. The scene is real; the horse stumbled as it was crossing the stream, sending Bean and co-star Alice Krige down into the water. Director Tom Clegg liked the scene and kept it for the final cut.
  • He subsequently appeared in a series of commercials where he would allude to his earlier role, saying things like, Sharpe idea. In The Lord of  the Rings, he continues the joke: after touching the Sword of Elendil he says, Still Sharpe.''
  • Received an honorary degree from Sheffield Hallam University.
